Charmingly Naive

We know it isn't just the police reading and writing to the blog. We have fans among friends and family of officers, other bloggers, assorted writers and authors, countless media members and countless visits from IP addresses traceable to both City Hall and HQ. And it's almost charming when an outsider comes in with something this silly:

I find it hard to believe that the academy is at fault. I am sure that there are minimum training standards. I am sure that the instructors are qualified. If you blame the people at the academy, then also, blame yourself.

What are you doing to improve the situation? What are you doing to improve the training?

If you like to blame other people, then you are part of the problem.

    Not a Cop
Here's someone who obviously has never lived in the city, worked for the city, or had anything to do with the city, aside from voting for Obama. Someone who doesn't know the meaning of the word "clout" and thinks politicians are their betters. In other words, a "useful idiot."

SCC, there are idealists out there who really do believe we can just snap our fingers, think good thoughts, and we can instantly effect change. They don't know how this putrid, archaic, ingrained and incestuous system works.
Maybe they work (if they work) in 'open' workspaces, and they get to vote on how the business operates, and they 'job-share' with 'flex-hours', so they don't begin to understand the system we operate in.
I used to try to explain it to the clueless. Now I smile benignly and imagine myself patting them on the head and sending them off to get an ice cream cone.

Instructors are qualified by who they know / blow. An instructor position at the academy is a spot , Monday through Friday days . Many officers would kill for that assignment , especially in this environment .

Ok hold on one cotton pickin minute!! Are you telling me that the academy is not staffed by the best and brightest the department has to offer? This is incomprehensible to me and it leaves me wondering, how the fudge did this happen! I remember going through that place quite a few years ago and all the instructors there were qualified and deserving of their spot. I knew that was true because they even told me!

"Not a Cop"

If you were, you'd know that the academy is pretty much a joke, and has been for a while.

Total bulllshit classes at times mandated by the state & city.

The lovely 40hr class on "Diversity Training"!
WOW!!!!

A wasted 40hrs on Thai, Chineese, Black, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Polish, Irish, Italian HORSESHIT!
So, if an Italian beats his wie, can we still lock him up?
If a Puerto Rican is speeding, does he still get a ticket?
Mexican selling heroin still catch a case?

Oh, that's right, the CPD needs to be more " culturally sensitive"....

The person who does 27 sit-ups gets a pass because they are someone's son/daughter/gay/trans/... But passing is 30 sit-ups?
Then that person gets promoted because of "Who" they know... Not "What" they know...

Oh, don't believe me? Ask a certain Street Deputy. Promoted because of her ethenticity & sexual orientation.
Not just once, or twice, or three times... But her whole Career!
And she's not the only one!
If you're Strogers niece, you might be a Commander in 12 years too!
The cousin of the wife of a (then) Senator (now president) and you get to rise through the ranks & make important decisions too!

40 hrs of shooting teaches barely the basics!
Then it's 30 rounds a year, a 6 hrs class every few years... And that's it.

Training, from the Academy to in-service is a JOKE!
And it's not just Patrol. Ask Narcotics, Det Div, Gang Enforcement, Marine, SWAT....

Not to mention, there's no reward.
If you're stupid, lazy, or just plain incompetent, you still get by.

Welcome to Chicago.... You voted for this shit, so quit you're bitching!

Gotta love these idiots and their naïveté I went through the Academy and thought that all the instructors were veteran officera who had put in their time on the street and knew their stuff. Ten years later after working in 011 and 025 i realised most were house mouse types who didn't want to work the street , wanted straight days weekends off etc and had a stinger to get to the academy and a good number with only a few more years than me. I'm not knocking every Academy instructor but many talked a good game but I realised later had done little real work.

Second City,

I am retired and I can attest to the fact that officers from your academy have conducted training around the world. I have even worked with CPD officers in Bosnia and Afghanistn. They were well trained, exhibited great professionalism and were surprisingly very politically correct and saavy. I know that CPD personnel have been seconded to US State Department INL law enforcement training missions around the globe and their contributions were immense, so obviously the department sent their best officers. They were great at explaining that CPD as well many major police departments in the world are continually having to deliver outstanding results while working with diminishing resources. Perhaps your training division colleagues deserve a second look and a bit of applause from your audience.

I am a troll reader for about five years I guess. I love this blog. I have learned so much including how to interpret the news from you and the cops here. Last night some Muslim woman was harrassed in Rogers Park and video was shown on the ABC 7 ten pm newscast. I smelled a rat story planted by Channel 7 to do the daily Trump bash. 1) Why was the offender pixated concealing identity? 2) The "victims" mother blamed the actions on Trump! Hilarious. No asshole, it is not Trump. It is the woman who was the offender who was at fault and secondly, your fellow terrorist Muslims are contributors. You know, the assholes who crashed jetliners into the WTC and burn people alive, ass hat. Trump had nothing to do with it.

But this blog is like a home of like minded people sometimes in thought but more likely in character, a refuge from others who are confused and do not like to see things in absolutes.
Perhaps you have more troll readers than you know but keep your successful formula.

Yep sorry but the people I work with scare the shit out of me when it comes to guns. This job doesnt reward "excellence" of any kind, for anything, unless they can wrap it in phony bologna and put it to their use. The fitness ribbon was a good start but who in hell ever heard of the fitness ribbon ever helping anyone every get anywhere? But at least it gave people some pride to wear it on their uniform.

The FTO program once gave Patrol officers pride to be a part of, and Im going back 20+ years here. But many FTOs back then felt pride and felt like they were giving back and were mentors, I know cause I was one young PO who was mentored. And now look at the clowns that take it? Nobody, or very few, worth a shit because being "worth a shit" means nothing on this imbecilic clout job.

I'm no cop either, old retired flight deck rat and commercial phone guy in DC. Bad stuff happened there in the 90's, they finally gave the cops semi-autos equal to what I carried in Virginia concealed (permit, I'm no crook). That said, nit-wits in the blogs declare cops are over-armed, even as they're specifically targeted. My opinion? If cops need armored personnel carriers 6 cops per with turret-mounted 25MM chain guns, night vision with Apaches and drones overhead, suits me. Kevlar-everything with an HK or M-16 and 5 magazines-to-a-cop? It suits me. If cops need to adopt the tactics of the U.S. Marines in Fallujah, Iraq to find a bad guy, suits me. If cops need and want all those and more, suits me. And to the citizens who don't want that? Square away your own neighborhoods, you just lost your police service. More training? Sure, why not? Bad shootings, and there are plenty, should be fewer. But training isn't the issue, the basic inability to cope with these folks without tactical advantage is the real problem, we'd have fewer "bad" shootings with better, more aggressive tactics. Next in line is the no-snitch rule. Of course cops clean up and leave, because who's to help find the bad guys anyway. If you could get the truth out of them, 5:1 odds are, you're talking to the mother of the shooter when you ask around. Ah well, my BS takes, your mileage may vary.

Nonetheless, someone tell this not-a-cop where I'm wrong.

It's probably some worried Academy instructor/admin spouse worried about having their no seniority significant other returning to streets on 1st watch. Sour grapes, blame yourself.
Be advised -
I am a crime monitor, advisor and reporter.
Anything more may subject me to disciplinary action.
- If you don't want to get shot, stay off the front porch at 2 am.
- If you don't want to get robbed, don't hold an iPhone and wear headphones.
- If you don't want to be generally victimized by feral urban youth, don't walk on sidewalks or the lakefront.

When the people want to return to a civil society, they will have to wait until the embers of the Obama fires are long cooled.
Training starts in the home and school, both have failed.
Community housebreaking somehow was never taught by the Democrats and more than ever, government defendants are messing all over.
Don't blame us.

A brief and, presumably, temporary reprieve from the vast chicken wing conspiracy to enforce the gag order imposed upon the gallows humor which is my cup of tea.

A decision based, I presume, on a modified algorithm intended to protect the more delicate sensibilities of an ever expending universe of visitors not familiar with the raw nature of experiencing the belly of the beast.

In other words, 'fuck 'em, if they can't take a joke' is vigorously, if not enthusiastically, frowned upon.

The training provided, or worse, mandated on this department is sub par at best. The best available training is hard to get into and far from mandatory. LEMART is a great class that HAS and WILL save lives. The rifle training as I remember from years ago when it started was very good training. CIT isn't bad either but by their own admission the curriculum is cut by more than half to meet the desired length of the academy/department.
"Training" is considered as anything with a video. It might be a dated streaming video from when Rodriguez was Supe or any number of YouTube videos. Think about the classes you have been to in recent years, if you are the police, they all revolve around video clips available on the Internet. Most of us have probably all ready seen most of them before they are played.

Standard class structure: Talk for 5-10 minutes, play video, repeat. Then the computer or operator has an error and they break for an hour. Then take an hour or 2 for lunch, return for the cycle.

ISR training had no consistency and left many with more questions than answers.

I read a couple people trying to compliment the academy, crawl back under a rock trolls. The academy is a political clout paradise. Get off the street and away from any police related issues, work school teacher hours and still tell people you are the big bad Chicago police. No academy in the country should have people assigned to it for more than a brief detail, maybe 2-3 years tops. Chicago?? People make it a career and stay for as long as the political wave will take them. 5/10/15 years hey why not?

God Bless you police! Question, can you state whether your control tactics training at the academy is adequate. I would like to know how you feel about your control tactical training received. Mr. T's brother was an instructor there. How much have things changed? Good bad?
