Blast From the Past
You want to read something interesting? It's about ten years old, but it's actually kind of timely.
- We are tentatively planning a series of articles, written by us and our
vast staff, outlining what we see as systemic problems throughout the
Department.
These problems are not small ones. Some have been around for years. Some are recent. Many are the result of political pressures put upon the Department. Some are self inflicted. All of them though, deserve some airing out. We know some of what we're planning to write, but welcome suggestions for others.
In any case, we aren't kidding ourselves that we can change the Department. We aren't in any position to do that. But somewhere along the line, maybe someone somewhere will recall what was posted on an anonymous internet blog years ago and adjust their own behaviors to maybe inflict less damage on the Department, their careers and everyone else they come in contact with.
What else can we hope for?
That was posted right here on the SCC blog on 25 September
2006. It's linked, along with the promised series of articles on the
right hand side of the main page, under the cute pictures and Rules of
the Blog. Go read a few, especially the FTO Program one. Go ahead. We'll
wait.
....
Are you back? Kind of
spooky, wasn't it? Almost like we had a crystal ball or something.
Memories are short, nowadays more than ever, but institutional
knowledge? That's forever.

So a mastermind hacker spills the beans on Hillary but the popo who is .000000000000000000001% as criminal requires 10,000,000,000,000,000,000% more DOJ attention. Clap clap clap i raise my glass to the stupidist crap in the history of mankind. I find it hard to believe people have graduate degrees out there in statistics. I guess when you print fake money these smoke and mirror operations are at no charge.
The list will be long but we can only try. The focus groups haven't helped yet.....
Nice article in trib today about merit promoted white shirts and their complaints of racism in law enforcement. Funny no mention about how they were promoted due to race.
Thanks Scc. The dept. needs suggestions from the guys actually doing the job.
and lets find a way to keep those old timers around a little longer...by voluntary basis naturally....but perhaps an incentive. We must stop the droves from fleeing to retirement. God Bless them but we need them more than ever.
Dear SCC, For the last 3 days you have written the Holy Grail for being the police in Chicago. Your insights and the comments in response should be mandatory reading for every policeman on the job today. It is possibly the finest primer for how to think and act like the police ever published. Plus it is also a guide on how to get home safely-both now and thirty years from now! The series of writings-and learned responses-should be made into a course to be taught at the Academy.
Thank you SCC for some great police work this week! We needed it!
Im not a fan of the baseball hats. Can we where cowboy hats???? I gave up on the shorts. 91 degrees later today. It will feel like 100. Ill sit in the station and play fireman.
What would you know?
All you are is a scruffy little blog.
Where are all you degrees, doctorates and grants?
You don't have any credentials!
All you have is experience and common sense.
The clouted clowns of the Chicago Machine will just ignore you.
Because they have no common sense or experience.
Funny stuff. I recall some posts about bubble head being a jag bag back then and how ironic he still is a pompous self tooting gold star now
Couple of rumors I'm hearing if anyone can verify:
1. Summer Mobile is being extended another 90 days. You can stay if you want, or else they'll do reverse seniority again.
2. A city-wide unit is in the works and should be up and running by October.
Hey, your blog should be required reading for citizens like me, too. I've learned a lot. And I tell my friends.
Can U imagine having less than 5, less than 10 years otj in today's climate? I fear and sincerely apologize to the younger peeps otj. Like no other modern period they will be scrutinized by people who were safe at the time of their struggle. They'll make judgements on the copper, yet they have no way of understanding much much much less even be there. I'd reconsider what I did if I didn't have a kid. There's gonna be a few more kicks in the nuts before the show ends. HQ, IPRA, and The St. Louis Cardinals will exact their flesh as they see it right/wrong.
Good Luck
All the cameras around about one shy of "The Thought Police" executing Citywide. LP
First thing I learned in school was where the bathroom was located.
The second thing was that history always repeats itself......
Why is it that the brass cannot understand how important the FTO program is and treat it as such. I work in a large suburb of Dallas. Many of our FTO's have less than 3 years on themselves. Heck they don't know squat about being a cop yet. And to top it off, they're going away from the San Jose model to a "narrative" how do you feel today kinda bullshit evaluation. The training and formative years of these cops are the most important, why the hell can't we treat it with the importance it deserves. I pray for you guys everyday up there. ALL North Texas agencies are hiring (we're 30 short now).. Summer can suck, but hey, you leave the snow shovel behind. Be safe.
The article in Tribune that "Sgt" Spradley did is quite offensive. Here is a guy that had no problem using his heritage when it benefited him financially, but he has to talk about the one time he was allegedly pulled over by a suburban white cop and the cop was rude????? CPD.....the Titanic of police departments
Too much wasted manpower on tac teams robbery teams burglary teams satiation teams. Every district should have one tac team. The rest of the district manpower should be assigned to patrol. No more satiation or summer mobile. Problem beats could then have two or three units assigned to them every watch. 723 723a723b that way everyone does their share and beat officers don't feel so dumped on all the time.
All I give a fuck about is making it to 55.
Hey, when are furlo picks?
OT- Re: Recruits and cover shirts.
I often find myself driving passed the academy in the morning. Is there a rule in place forbidding recruits from wearing cover shirts to/from? I see many recruits in their newly minted baby blues arriving and grabbing their gear from their cars. I NEVER see any of these recruits wearing cover shirts over their uniform shirt. Ever. You would think that in this climate, the wearing of the cover shirt (or getting fully dressed at the station all together) would be addressed in the first hour, of the first day of the academy.
Remember---knowledge is power.
Nobody cares about the FTO program. The Supe, the Dist level bosses, the FOP. They are looked down as goof balls. Not cool enough to have a white shirt. Until the FTO program has enough incentives to make people flock to it, it will be the red headed step child of the dept.
Just another example of this racist anti police DOJ. Remember, it was Obama as a state senator who came up with the traffis stop study, a 2 year program, that did not show the results they wanted so they extended it. The police are the problem, but forget about Crooked Hillary and all of her crimes. Love the double standard.
2:39. You are correct. Us coppers in summer mobile were asked yesterday to add our name to a list if we wanted to stay in the unit. The city wide thing hasn't been confirmed, but I've heard that rumor as well.
OFF TOPIC... Can you please have a post about the Chicago Police officers who are who did interviews about being pulled over by white police...accusing the white officers of racial profiling. Very sad. Is it possible that the white officers were not racially profiling? YES Is it possible that the white officers were racially profiling? YES. The bottom line, is, that it is reckless and inappropriate to make such harsh remarks against white officers without a chance to defend themselves. Especially Sgt. E Spradely A meritorious puke...just like Commander Fletcher .....meritorious. They should be more professional.
This needs to be addressed.
I have sen some poor treatment to minorities....from officers on this job. Most of the time I have witnessed the poor treatment of minorities, it was done by members of the same demographic. Black officers treating black citizens poorly and hispanic treating hispanic poorly.
Being a white officer does not make him/her a racist.

Don't know what station you're referring to but our station isn't exactly cool.
On these hot summer days the A/C struggles to cool the front desk area and usually keeps it between 78-81 degrees.... not exactly "cool"
Nice article in trib today about merit promoted white shirts and their complaints of racism in law enforcement. Funny no mention about how they were promoted due to race.
You can blast them here all you want; just about every black officer you know (if you ever bother to ask them) will have a tale or two about how they have also faced what they felt was biased and unprofessional conduct from nonblack officers, either before they were hired onto the job or even after they became police officers. Truth is, most of them don't discuss it because most of the time, it serves no useful purpose. During the years of pre-body and dash cams, if a black officer filed a complaint alleging improper treatment, it would most likely be closed and classified as not sustained. Just because they don't openly discuss these unpleasant experiences doesn't take away from the fact that they occurred.
Let's not forget that several officers (black) filed a discrimination suit in the 018th District some time back, alleging openly biased treatment at the hands of white supervisors in that district (including a captain), which they won. Just because it wasn't discussed here on the blog doesn't mean it didn't happen.
To think we now are stuck with a SGT. who failed in 12 and the now retired FTO was told to pass her. This idiot once used her SIDEARM to swat at a bee with her partner sitting next to her
You heard it here first 35th is buying an ice truck for city wide use and planning on delivering ice cream to the south and west side for the summer part of reconnecting with the community. Ice truck will have CPD stickers all over. 3 PO driver, ice cream server, and finally one to over safety while parked handing out ice cream. I'll take 2 scoops please.
More blasting in the ass.
You can expect systemic changes in the untold Departmental Diversity Project way before the CPD DOJ Report even gets drafted.
Don't get your promo hopes up if you are without colour. Even if you are high on the current lists and subsequent lists.
The Dept will be changing and not for the betterment of qualified leadership positions. Also will effect hires too.
Apparently too many Hard Chargers were stopping and battling with the wrong folks and their supervisors did nothing about it.

Yes summer mobile is being extended and it will go reverse again if they do not fill the spots. Those that were reversed in this time around will go back to their districts/units. Volunteers are being asked as we speak.

Why will they only be going to "the community" aka the ghetto?
I'm sure the tax paying areas on South Side like Garfield Ridge, Beverly, Mt. Greenwood and numerous tax paying areas on NorthWest Side would like the CPD truck to come to their neighborhoods handing out free ice cream.
WTF?
Training is important.
Not a cop. In my business, training is one of the most important things we do. WHY?
Because training saves lives. Our lives. Our Co-Workers lives. The lives of our customers and the general public. Our industry used to be one of the most dangerous in the world. Now it is much safer. Our training is realistic, and gives us experience, including screwing up, where screwing up does not hurt. We learn from our mistakes. Most importantly, we learn to do it right, and we practice doing it right until it is habit.
When we get out in the field, we coach each other to do it right. And we honestly evaluate our own performance. And our supervision is held to the same standards. They use the same standards and tools, even if they are sitting on their butt behind a desk.
I hope the CPD can develop better training. I have heard about your lack of FTO training, no rifle training, no training for carry permits, etc. This is the crap the DOJ should be screaming about.

Back when I came on ('92), we didn't have khakis. We did have shirts/jackets with no patches until we got our buttons, at which point, we got the patches, but from that second week until we left, we had to come in from/go out to our cars without covering up, and were told we had to come in/go out that way. Not sure if that policy was different at any time since then though.

And Newspapers...every rant by the incensed media exaggerates facts, such as a certain shooting of a criminal 16 times.
Facts are that this criminals deadly threat was extinguished however this criminal was not the recipient of 16 rounds.
Perhaps an expert out there can advise if the "reporters" can be held liable for not reporting fact? With individual punititive damages sought for each and every occurrence?
Your thoughts are welcome...

I'm hardly what one could call a race baiter. I get sick of the race baiting from other black people and then I get sick of hearing about race baiting from white people. I'm stuck in the middle wishing everybody would shut up. With that said though that stuff happens more than people like to admit. I'm one of those people who gets along with just about everyone, the liked and hated alike, and have worked with multiple people that I liked working with only to later find they dropped the n bomb in front of the too many witnesses and word circulated. One of them is a repeat offender. I've never had a problem with him and I would venture to say he likes me but what do you do with? I have a copper friend that just went fed and when she was overseas on deployment soldiers were screwing around her sleeping area so she would come in and find little things they did or left in her area just for her. It's a gulash of nonsense. Have I met too many black people that think every thing is racist? Yes. Have I witnessed more than enough times where a black kid with no history got his car towed over a blunt, arrested for swearing or the officer on scene thought the kid was a thug and treated him like it but the kid was softer then pup poop..yes, actually. It happens. And in reality I have seen it happen more times to black kids than whites. In fact, the same guy I saw a black kid's car over a blunt let two white heroin addicts go with no charges even though one was caught with the needle in her arm. I don't even think anyone who knows the officer would call him racist but there is something that doesn't make sense about a white girl with blows going home and a black boy with a blunt getting a ticket. For the record I was there for the black boy and he didn't do anything but be stupid enough to commit an IVC violation with a blunt in his lap. He was polite, cooperative and everything.

I've shot 0! who's the one terrorizing the "community"? did shooting those poor blacks help you get your merit spot, hero? An earlier post hit the nail right on the head saying that officers of the same demographic as the "community" abuse them more than white officers.I really hope this city and department get whats coming to them if they hire whoever just to meet a racial quota. If you think its bad with lawsuits and drama now, think how its gonna be with unqualified people/folks getting hired and equally unqualified hacks getting promoted.

With the risk of being stripped at any time and Eddy-J being friends with a West side Assvocate of the neighborhood, all CPD should get a CC..

Are you turning 55 next year? I hope so because 2017 is the last year for the 55 and out group. I'll be putting in my paper work next month. Going in April.
Called the FOP today because of that Trib article about the judges ruling on the healthcare lawsuit. Just wanted to double check that I'll still be getting the free healthcare. They confirmed that anyone who leaves next year that is between the ages of 55 - 59 and has at least 20 years on will still get the health insurance in retirement. Anyone 54 or younger just got screwed by the ruling.

Spradley is obviously hooked up with Eddie's crew.
He gave an absolutely cringe worthy interview full of Eddie ball licking in the paper(story about the litttle girl who lived in 006 who wanted to be a police officer and died of cancer)after Eddie was installed.
NO ADULT with any pride would talk like that. He sounded like a pre-teen girl talking about how beautiful Justin Bieber is.

Take a look at the public schools. Back in the day the education experts like Jesse Jackson were demanding people of color be hired to teach colored students. It didn't matter if they were certified, qualified, or even smart. Just the right color. How well has that worked out?
They spent how much on busing because every minority student needed to sit next to a white child to learn. How did that turn out?
They always seem to miss the simple solution, PARENTS that give a fuck about their children.
That discrimination suit in 018 was pure bullshit. The coppers were offended that the white supervisors expected some work out of them. The biggest offender/dogass just retired after dodging jobs and blowing off the fine citizens of beat 1814 for years. Top cop? Hardly.

You still get health care between 55 and 65 if you work till 55. Of course you'll pay 2% because of the sellout fireman and Sergeant's. Dickwads.
The ruling if I got it right is if you were hired after 23 Aug 89 you on your own at Medicare age. the people hired before that date will have health care but at what cost? Was told by a retiree that the case will go to the appellate court soon and maybe to the Ill supreme court.
