Don't Pose for Cameras

  • A new open data project aims to make filing a complaint against Chicago Police — a fraught endeavor, since it’s often hard to name the cop in question — significantly easier.

According to data tracked by Mapping Police Violence, at least 54 people have been killed by police in Chicago since 2013, and the city has spent more than $640 million since 2004 settling police brutality cases. But properly identifying a Chicago Police officer for a formal complaint is a difficult process. False complaints can be met with a class 3 felony perjury charge. A successful complaint needs to be as detailed as possible, and lack of proper identification is an endemic problem in Chicago: One study found that more than a quarter of all complaints against CPD officers — 28 percent between March 2011 and March 2015 — were dropped for lack of officer identification, and only about 2 percent of complaints lead to disciplinary action.
So to be helpful, they've come up with a website, and they're trolling social media, award ceremonies, newspaper and television reports, even crime scenes and social media pages to get pictures of you to post so that a complainant can identify you. They've already got the names of every Department member thanks to the payroll databases the city released.

Of course, anyone can access this database and start stalking you at the grocery store, at your kid's ballgame, at church, at dinner, or anywhere, with a nice picture supplied by these ... whatever they are. And we don't have to remind everyone how easy it is to Google or Zaba someone.

Anyone else feeling all warm and fuzzy now?

If you search their site, they say that they have a trove of pictures they need to match up with the names. Want to know where they came from? 8000 + from twitter, 2,000 + from Flikr and about 250 from the public submissions. Once again a reminder to watch what you post on the internet.

We'll, isn't that special?!!!! Not the most user-friendly site (at least from a phone), but I found my name (no picture). If you click on the "That's The Officer" tab, it connects you to IPRA''s site so you can file a complaint. Isn't that just darling!??!? There probably isn't a thing the Dean and Co. can do about it either. There's a way to send the site an image. Maybe I can pay some stud Hollywood actor to take a picture with my uniform on, and I could submit it. Maybe Matthew Mc Conanaghey will do it...all right all right all right!!!!!

P.S. Go to the first page of commanders and look at Sean Loughran'a picture. He looks like a kid!

What a great idea, purple haired hipsters! You definitely get a participation trophy for this one. My favorite feature is uploading pictures to the site anonymously. I've already uploaded pics of cute kitties, chief wigwam, and a chocolate starfish. Try it. It's fun!

Oh, by the way, your site is garbage. Way to dump every department member on a single endless page. That's really going to help the people and folks find that big bad racist officer. That is, if they have the attention span to hit the down arrow on their browser for three months.

Stick with protesting with BLM as they demean you to the rear of the march because you're white. Hee haw!

I can tell you first hand if someone wants to find you it's as simple as this post described it. A couple of years ago a list was posted online of a bunch of CPD members that included my name and all my family close and distant member's names, my home address and all my real estate closing info, web sites (like Amazon) that I had an account with that I didn't know required settings to private or public, were all listed. All because the FOIA allowed protected employees names and salaries to be released. By Il. state law I can register my vehicles, and drivers license residence to a police facility address but the city can't block our name and salaries from public access. I can understand listing that info on a city employee that isn't in a profession that is at high risk for retaliation but LE officers that arrest and shut down whole gang operations, drug dealers, cartel members, organized crime organizations? We're so foolish to take and or stay in this profession for so many reasons. We're not respected by the politicians, the dept. supervisors, the majority of the public and especially by the media. Just punching bags in this day and age.

I can never understand why officers feel they have to advertise they are the police to everyone. Especially on social media. I remember a few weeks ago dozens of officers were posting on their Facebook account "first day of school" with pictures of themselves, their kids and what school their kids attend. I was fucking shocked. You are a police officer and this fucking stupid. And dumbfucks if you ask me well how do you know this if you do not have a Facebook account? Simple dummies, my partner does have a Facebook account and he is the one who showed me.

Don't believe what the media says about the midget visiting roll calls. It's like when he came to 011 one morning. He ran into the WC office to shake the hand of the merit Lt (which one? pick one every one of them are merit). Then ran to the commanders office to shake the multiple merit's hand and then ran out. Less than 2 minutes there.

I agree with 10/22/2016 05:33-What was once an honorable profession has been cheapened by politicians, ad hoc social justice groups, the professor class including government teachers and other dirt bags who contribute NOTHING good to our society. The police no longer solve problems or restore order. They are abused by most organized groups who are supposed to or claim to improve society and look at this country. We are in a civil war of words with each other, the begining of one in crime infested urban neighorhoods where shots routinely fired and people are killed. Are we headed to civil war? I used to laugh at people who said tht in the 60's but here we are again and the police who represent the first line of defense are on the line again.

There are no statesmen in this country. There is no quality of leadership. Look at this city, Detroit, Baltimore, Washington D.C. top to bottom; corrupt and incompetent.

I've created a script to obtain photos and details via the Flickr API and used it to mine 2 CPD Flickr groups so far. It retrieves the highest resolution image for each entry as well as the title, description and similar metadata available through the API. The run time for retrieving an entire group photos/details (approx 2000-5000) is generally a couple of hours due to rate limits. Next I'll be looking at analyzing the title/descriptions to see if it's possible to obtain names or probable names in at least some cases automatically. The output files have been added to github under cpd_pictures. More groups will be added as needed.

What. A. Bunch. Of. F--king. Bullshit!

I went to the first linked website, that 'Mapping Police Violence' swamp. And though I had a pretty good hunch of what I'd find, I clicked the 2014 link for, 'Unarmed Black People Killed by Police'. And as expected, like the sun rising each day, there it was; Michael Brown, Jr., 18 Also as expected was this complete fantasy of a description as to what led to his early demise;
----- 'Even after a grand jury hearing, details are unclear. Brown had either battered a police officer, or was innocently walking down the street with a friend. Witnesses say he was unarmed, with his hands in the air, and the officer shot him more than eight times. .... -----

Got that, details are still unclear -- yeah, like to a fucking Grapefruit. And these assholes are still pushing that totally discredited 'Hands Up' crap. Discredited BY the actual goddamn witnesses! But it gets even worse than what these jagoffs wrote about 'The Gentle Giant'. They have numerous People, or Folk, shown who died as a result of getting hit by a Car! Some were running from the police, some were just crossing the road and got hit. How The Hell is THAT 'Police Violence'!!! That's f--kin' ludicrous.

To boot, these pinheads have people shown who died in a 'Get Away Car' after it crashed. How that's 'Police Violence' is friggen bewildering.

Bottom line that website is a goddamn joke. Everything they have is not only NOT Credible, it's a laughingstock. Anyone who would take anything they see on that website seriously, is not only stupid but is so mentally ill they should be in an asylum.

'Police Violence' my ass!

All these govmint supported community organizers were formed by someone who has or is on the inside track at the o-IPRA-h. The sharps just figured out there's money in Social Justice Reforming and DOJ has baskets of deplorable cash to dole out to make their point seem valid at any cost. Essentially they've compiling a lineup book for a lackluster IPRA/COPA and subcontracted a sham community organization. I guess IPRA's posting of flyers on light poles didn't have the result those folks had hoped for.

On the other hand, could be the Dept found a way to get us to start wearing that damn hat...way down low, maybe a scarf on those cold crime scene nights, groucho glasses and maybe a bozo nose too.

In my opinion any officer who has received a complaint that originated with the parsons OpenOversight project MUST challenge the identification process.
Ordinarily, a complainant must view a photo array of similar photos, sign and date the identification of the officers picture, and it must be witnessed and secured as evidence.
The parsons project regarding the initial identification taints the entire process.

Word out of the Ogden District is that a C.A.P.S. officer visited the roll calls to take pictures of the watches so he could post on Twitter with a pen pal in New York. It seems when he wasn’t driving around a candidate named Chewey in an election, he was busy posting photographs of officers all over social media websites citing this is an important function of a veteran CAPS officer. On duty photographers belong in the forensic division doing evidentiary related tasks. Now if he could utilize a pair of handcuffs and discover policey-things like make a cameo appearance a criminal courtroom with some self generated duty-related central booking numbers. Is that asking too much from the CAPS officers?

He called the pension board and they told him when he turned 50 he'd receive around $700 a month if he wanted to wait until he turned 50. He decided to take the amount he'd put into the pension fund and the city sent him a check. The amount was for the money he'd put into the pension fund during his 16 years (around $95,000) minus 30% that the city takes(steals) and I think he has to pay taxes on it too. I have about 18 years on and I'm ready to go too, just looking for some other way to pay my bills.

Many times the weakest link to a web page is the hosting company.
If it is one of the large outfits they like money and don't like controversy.
Find out who host this page.
Put their contact info out.
Tell people this page puts police lives at risk and ask them to contact the hosting company.

In this political climate it is a long shot but you might cause the hosting company enough grief that they fire these people as clients.

The page will pop up again.

Repeat as needed.

Be sure your camera or phone has the GPS data location turned off if you post to social media or make sure your social media site strips what is called the EXIF data from a picture. the EXIF picture data can be read by a plug-in in just about any browser, and will give the exact longitude and latitude the picture was taken, as well as date, time, type of camera etc, etc. Plug long. and lat. into Google, and you will see your house, kids school, kids park, wherever, as long as that data is in the picture
