HQ Infestation

The Public Safety Building is the subject of an anonymous OSHA complaint because otherwise, the City won't do a thing about it:
  • State authorities are investigating a bed bug infestation at Chicago Police Headquarters.

    [...]

This year officers kept personal belongings in Ziplock bags, desk crevices were taped to trap bedbugs. The goal was to avoid officers getting bit.

In 2014, an officer had bites on his ankle. Another had bites just below the calf. One was bitten on the back of the neck.

“I do not understand why the department would not take the position of being protective on their employees because it is in their best interest to protect the entire building,” said Marlon Harvey, Chairman Safety Committee FOP Lodge 7.

A few months ago, an anonymous complaint was sent to the Illinois Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Illinois OSHA). Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office received this letter. It requests information be sent by November 3, 2016 about the “pest control plan” at headquarters.
Personally, we blame bed bugs on the people bringing beds to Public Safety Headquarters - irefightersfay.

We kid! We kid!!!

I can imagine the walls there in HQ have millions, went there a couple years ago and noticed quite a few crotch scratchers. The bums sleeping in the lobby love the bed bugs, they are like candy mints to eat.

All the brass have all about taken them home to their warm beds at homes.

City buildings are a micro biologists dream, they can find virus' never seen to mankind. yet. The soil of the HQ was a old dumping site of sludge and waste products in the late 1800'. I do feel for the people that have to work 8 hours in these dangerous and toxic city buildings. It is tragic for city employee' . The hall could care less. Homan sq is one of the worse. Many people came up with bad illnesses there.

Remember - Bedbug Lives Matter TOO ! Not meant to be funny, but had to write it.

Bedbugs are NOW relatively simple to deal with.

http://www.pctonline.com/article/pct0814-silica-gel-research-bed-bugs/

I went thru this hassle in an apartment building I own last year. Adults literally crying in fear.

ONce the bugs come in contact with the stuff they're dead in a few hours. Also get the little "bowls" and place them under bedposts. Put small bit of the powder along all baseboards with small brush. Real hassle, but better than the insanity the bedbugs cause.

Diatomaceous Earth used to be one recommended way. Not anymore. Heat is probably the best overall way to get rid of them very quickly but good luck heating up a large building to the appropriate temperature for a number of hours.

I'm sure some Daley relative can create a company to handle this type of work.

This future product looks promising too.

http://www.pctonline.com/article/pct0615-pheromone-laced-bed-bug-trap/

Naturally the company initially planning to market it went bankrupt just before.

Bed bugs can be transported on clothing or in briefcases. They seem to be everywhere. But, CPD not giving a care about their employees is nothing new. I worked in the old HQ up on the 12th floor. The place was infested with roaches which used to crawl out of the typewriters while you were working. Human feces ran down the walls from the lockup on 13 floor. The windows leaked, snow and ice would form on the inside and at times there was no heat . We were told to put on our winter coats and continue to work. These are conditions that no one would tolerate in the private sector. The union did not care back then, so some things have changed. Once I retired and went into the private sector I was absolutely amazed on how well the company treated its employees. I was not used to that. On CPD these gold stars are empowered to treat those in their units like trash. And, they get away with it. Officers have to put up with it under threat of a transfer to less favorable conditions. It should not be that way.

11/13/2016 07:34:00 AM

That has to be a pretty bad infestation. Since bedbugs are like cockroaches which hide when light is present. And when personnel are present there are lights on.

I'm retired now, and I'm glad I never brought them home...Just like the city... never admit there is a problem until it is Overwhelming.

So... along those lines...HQ is WINING the bedbug problem, and reports of infestation are down from the same period last year. We have increased manpower in infested areas, and made this a priority.

Special Ed released a press statement That says "The overall bedbug infestation is dropping, and you can take that to the bank."

Liberals...Do you get it....???

Just like back in the old cha high-rise
days when we would just marvel at
the abject filthiness of those towering
dung heaps we had to Police...

"The rats got roaches, the roaches
have fleas and the fleas got ticks"

Civilian neighbors looking at us like
we've lost our mind because we
would be in the hallway stripping
down to our skivvies while bagging/
spraying our uniform.

Now if only OSHA would move on the
city knowingly keeping notorious cancer
& upper respiratory disease hot-spot
Police facilities instead of mitigating those.

Heh...

Maybe that's why Rahm pushed so hard to
dump retirees... His actuaries told him that
the city could foreseeably be on the hook
BIG TIME for refusing to address that issue
on the front end.

How many YOUNG men and women are
sick and have died or are dying because of
these "sick buildings" the mayor's office forces
Policemen to work in.

Forget about FOP taking the lead on doing anything,
they've been co-opted by City Hall since the beginning
and now more so than ever before.

It's horribly tragic when, "I gotta get my kid promoted/
I gotta secure my post-retirement feather-bed" comes
at the very real expense and detriment of FOP members.

"Yeah, I bit ya, but you KNEW I was a snake
anyways, so shame on YOU for picking me up"

Oh well...

Perhaps with the NATIONALLY ordered regime
change in D.C. and the doers of Chicago Fuckery
losing access, cover and shielding, perhaps some
measure of vengeance can be exacted on our
behalf.

You know...
Since we had "rules" and "conditions of employment"
that made it difficult for us to defend ourselves and
actually fight back.

The desk crew and powers that be had no issue with this. Add in the derelict sex offenders loitering and you have the root cause of said infestations. Pathetic and disgusting along with embarrassing. Why would the think tanks that run this Dept. care.
They send you to train at Near North. A building that should be condemned, loaded with roaches, rats, rat shit and asbestos.
Next time your at 51st/Wentworth look up in the fluorescent lights. Roaches so big you could walk them with a leash.
Districts with methane gas oozing back into the locker rooms from the toilets because the cheapest bidder said they could run some plumbing.

The only way to combat bed bugs is HEAT. They will only die after the areas of infestation reach a certain temperature. If HQ doesn't remove all furniture and carpets and hire a company to bring in equipment to heat the entire building to the necessary temperature the bed bugs will remain.

So where'd they come from?

* Infested homeless camping out in the lobby?

* Cop that picked it up from an infested homeless somewhere?

* Civilian who's building was infested?

It's important to try to figure out so you can prevent them from getting back in after you get rid of them (which is a bitch)

Make no joke about it, the occupants, tenants and required visitors all unwillingly contribute in some manner to the infestation.
It's a fact that some folks are sympathetic to all living things, some folks are hosts to critters and some critters are just itinerant hitchhikers.
Sanitation is the first step in ridding pests of all kinds.
Elimination of sources of free food and shelter is just as essential.
Ignoring and obliging safe harbor for pests will only increase the problem.

Controlling bedbugs, roaches or rats is an easy task.
Just give them jobs, make them pay rent, high taxes and call them racist bigoted republicans.
Then watch them leave.

We are going to be really busy soon getting the illegal invading criminals out of this country this is great news,as long as we are protected federally for doing our jobs:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/president-elect-trump-says-how-many-immigrants-hell-deport/

we are going to lose 1.33 BILLION that's a lot of money due to the criminal sanctuary cities concept that rahm and the 50 have kept violating federal laws:

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/11/10/chicagos-sanctuary-city-status-could-be-a-problem-with-trump-administration/

Chicago’s reputation as a safe haven for undocumented immigrants could cost it billions of dollars under the Trump administration.

CBS 2’s Dorothy Tucker reports.

Chicago’s designation as “sanctuary city” means the undocumented Mexican Americans who shop in Little Village have, what the head of the chamber of commerce calls, “peace of mind.”

That peace of mind came in 2012 when the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance saying undocumented immigrants stopped by police for minor crimes would not have fear of deportation because authorities won’t call immigration officials.

“They’re gonna be stopped for speeding, but the officer will not ask them for documents proving they’re a citizen or not,” Jaimie Di Paulo says.

That policy doesn’t sit well with President elect Donald Trump, who threatened to cancel federal funding to sanctuary cities.

In Chicago, that’s an anticipated $1.33 billion for 2017 — money that is used for everything from building bridges to feeding students. It’s money Trump supporters don’t want the city to lose just to protect illegal immigrants.

“When people break the law there are consequences, and being here illegally is, as the name implies, breaking the law,” Jeff Halm says.

Mayor Emanuel has indicated he’s committed to Chicago remaining a sanctuary city, but Trump’s stance against illegals still stings.

“You don’t see too many people on the streets,” Little Village merchant Andres Moya says.

Emanuel says the President-elect has yet to set out his formal agenda.

So rahm says he is committed to making the highly taxed city sanctuary city! rahm "law and order" simple as that follow the law! Just think obey the law rahm with that money you could use it to fund the police pension as required by law,and you could make Chicago very safe hiring as many coppers as needed and opening up sections of the jail closed keep the criminals there for a long while no more i bond bullshit to any repeat offenders! the people have spoken we are tired of the same old we want to be great again all aboard mayor and elected!

Having to deal with the damn things elsewhere. Had to dump furniture, spray and heat a building up to almost 140 degrees.

This makes me mad because people I know work there. Here is what might get some action.

Report that you have seen the bugs in Special Ed's and other important peoples' offices and call the janitors for an immediate cleanup.

Get photos and videos of the critters, going from an identifiable room marker down to their itty-bitty level. Get that out to the news media and they might ask Special Ed about what he is doing about and hopefully he will do more than scratch his head, or his crotch or ankles.

If all else fails wear a Tyvek suit, put your desk on top those barriers you can buy at a hardware store and spray your workspace and get some use out of that gas mask we were issued.
