He Blames Whom?

We still don't understand how this guy gets a platform as a "community activist," but the media gives him air time to spot bullshit like this:
  • A 15-year-old boy was charged Thursday with three felonies in the Wednesday morning carjacking of a FedEx truck on Chicago's South Side.

Police said the teen held a 46-year-old female FedEx driver at gunpoint near West 75th and South Green streets in the city's Englewood neighborhood around 9:15 a.m. and stole her truck.

    [...]

Andrew Holmes, a city crisis responder, said asked delivery companies to require all trucks to have two-man crews to deter thieves.

"I am pleading with FedEx and UPS. Put some helpers on the trucks. These packages are not worth them losing their life for," Holmes said.
Um, what now? Because certain people (or folks) can't control their baser instincts, parent(s) can't be bothered to teach their spawn that stealing is illegal and the community refuses to call out their own for behavior frowned upon by a civilized society, FedEx and UPS should have to put a second helper on the trucks to deter thieves?

How about Fed Ex spring for a few armed guards to blow these armed offenders away? That would be a deterrent we could get behind. Plus, the recidivism rate approaches zero in short order, so it's a win-win.

UPDATE: We amended our description of Holmes to a more generic "guy" seeing as how a number of readers have had halfway decent experiences with him on scenes and investigating crimes. We don't know about that "city crisis responder" thing though - sounds like a political angle, and we've never been shy about our feeling where politicians are concerned.

SCC, I have to say that you are wrong this time. Andrew Holmes is actually a stand up guy. I'm not sure what he's getting at about the whole extra help thing on FedEx, UPS, etc; etc, but he totally backs the police. You'll never hear him badmouth the police. He constantly is on the news telling people to turn the offenders into the police. The victim service that he works for came into the academy a couple years ago for a Det. class and the first thing he did was apologize to the class of Detectives for how the community treats the police. I know he has worked with and helped various detectives with getting offenders to turn themselves in and finding missing persons. Again, he is a stand up guy not to be mistaken for some of the frauds out there claiming to be community activists.

I thought the same thing. Hire another guy to watch the truck? That will turn in to 2 or 3 guys after the thugs rob and beat the " extra guy ". I am so tired of this man commenting on every murder, shooting, robbery and all types of social ills. He has found his way in to police news conferences, always looming in the background . Is he employed by the city ?

Andrew Holmes is not a community activist like the BLM

Andrew Holmes is very well liked in the detective division, he has been very helpful. There is no one that is his equal.

I couldn't get any video to play, so I don't know if there is anything else he had to say, but I hardly think telling ups and fedex to double up for their safety is something bad

I think he is reinforcing the fact that there are a lot of little jag offs out there that will rob them

We already have a good number of ODPO's doing side jobs driving around and watching FedEx and UPS trucks in 011 and 015.

My first question would be:

Was the FedEx vehicle a Company truck or a non-union contractor? The Corporate FedEx and UPS bosses have the money to burn to add an Armed Security person to ride with the driver. The mom and pop owned franchise stores not so much.

Point 2: A good number of the trucks from these 2 companies I see on a daily basis are usually sitting empty with the damn door open while the driver makes a quick delivery. In the Loop the doors are usually closed because the driver is usually inside a high rise for 20 or 30 minutes dropping off multiple packages on different floors.

Like some of the above posters, Holmes is NOT the problem. He is a decent guy and trying to make a differnce. He does not always have the right idea like in this case but no one is right always.

Fed Ex and UPS is not the problem either. The problem is the City and it is the responsibilty of the City to enforce its laws so that street thugs are locked up Preckwinkle and Rahm, you assholes.

IMHO CPD should be running some decoy trucks and a car or two nearby and get some heads. I know UPS would drop a truck off for use and I bet FED EX would too. I mean real trucks and not leased for the season from Ryder.

Plus they could drop phony package boxes with a message inside: This is a decoy package placed on your porch by CPD attempting to keep your neighborhood safe from street crime. Thank you. Rahm and Ed could claim it an innovative crime fighting strategy.

OT - In yet another slap in the face to every working cop that aspires (usually in vain) to someday actually earn a gold star - take a look at the new AMC message simply titled "Special Order." Robin Robinson decided that the customary title afforded all other civilians of Director wasn't fitting for her. Instead, she sticks it to all the sworn officers by using the little of Commander. God forbid she be rightfully associated with the other politically appointed civilian Directors. She has NO right to be called Commander.

I agree with the proposal to add an employee who 'rides shotgun' on FedEx and UPS trucks in Chicago's Turd infested neighborhoods. There are several benefits to this including:

1) Increased employment for low skill workers and less complaints about failure to deliver.

2) Awareness throughout the nation that Chicago has a serious problem might help to shame local government into making positive changes.

When major shippers like Amazon add a 'security' fee for packages sent to Chicago's worst zip codes to pay for the truck riders, folks will start waking up to the cost of the hot mess they find themselves in.

If the delivery companies refuse to deliver to certain zip codes or set up "safe" delivery locations where the trucks can be secured while delivering packages what can the communities say? They are racist? Have a PR team ready to go countering that position with the number of packages lost to theft and assaults on drivers.
Out here in the hinterlands we have a real neat system for remote delivery. It is called neighbors. My UPS and FedX drivers know where to deliver packages for my house when I am not home. This guy has a farm and barn the driver knows there is somebody there and leaves the packages there. Of course this requires a relationship between civilized persons to live together for mutual benefit. An idea seemed to be lost on certain creatures in society.

Once again, as with the Police being the "Problem", it now appears the Victims are the problem and that problem will be solved by making more Victims available to the criminals. Then, when we have an incident where two Fed-Ex employees are killed at once; well then we can come up with putting three on the next truck. And of course, the customers will absorb the cost. How about this plan: No Deliveries to Ghetto Areas! Every day we draw closer to No Go Zones as exist in Europe. There it is over religion and Sharia Law, and here it will be over an out of control population. Chicago/Wilmette Values; Appease the Minority at the expense of the Majority. Actually Andrew Holmes is a very decent guy that supports the police. He tells it like it is and doesn't blame the gun or police for all the shooting like other activists we all know. He focuses on all community issues and not just shooting or police involved. Listen to him when there is any type of police shooting he has stated "Don't point a weapon at police if you don't want to get shot" or " drop the weapon when told to do so by police". I was shocked to here those statements coming from a community activist. He actually stands with CPD. Not sure why you have it out for Andrew Holmes. He seems to be trying to help while acknowledging parts of chicago are the wild wild west. Is it ever possible that someone might just care about this city and be sick and tired about the killings and crime that occur on a daily basis. I have yet to hear him talk disparagingly about the police and usually tries helping the police in solving crime. You guys are wrong this time

Maybe FedEx and UPS should just stop delivering to those neighborhoods and make the recipient go to the warehouse to pick them up. Let the neighborhood deal suffer the consequences.

Sure, make the private companies pay for their own security.

No one wants to spend money on prisons because they cost too much.

Now you'll see the real cost of not sending criminals to prison.

Suckers.

How would a helper make a difference? Then we have two victims? If the 14 year old offender has a gun then a helper will have no impact? What driver will risk his/her life for merchandise? Eventually, drivers will refuse to serve certain areas? Or should Fed ex offer combat pay? Ballistic vests? Crime is growing and the CPD cannot keep up with the increase. Johnson wants recruits to meet community leaders? How will that impact the crime rate? Politicians are silent or fetal. The mayor ignores the crime and focuses attention on immigration. How low can we go?

I don't see why Andrew Holmes is the topic of this story. Although its not the greatest idea, he is only trying to help by offering a possible solution to the problem. Who else out there is offering any solutions other than "more police" or "more diverse police" or "better trained police". I have seen him on several crime scenes speaking to media and people on the street. I can't remember a single incident where he said anything negative about the police, or questioned the CPD in any manner. That includes a few shaky I'm not sure what his motivation is, but its definitely not to hurt the police. With all the police negativity going on right now, should we be attacking the only activist in the black community that seems to like us?

Obviously, the problem lies with all the racist oppressors who flaunt their wealth (gained from exploiting the blacks and browns) by ordering things online and having them delivered to their doorsteps. The ONLY way to correct this injustice is to give every disenfranchised household free internet, and free Amazon gift cards, so they too can receive things via delivery trucks. This will, of course, be paid for by taxes placed on other orders NOT purchased with these free government cards, because thats the only FAIR way. If you think that this program is wrong, then you are clearly racist and part of the problem. And just in case... /sarcasm off/

If cops werent wating time with parking tickets and pot arrests and now weed tickets, if LEO wasn't wasting resources with permits for RIGHTS which only serve to hassle the already law abiding people anyway, a LOT more effort would be available for warrant serving, which is what is supposed to the be the core of LE in the first place. Prohibition of alcohol demonstrated the complete lack of merit that exits with prohibition of THINGS. Heck, Chicago and Illinois tried even absolute prohibition of gun carriage, and what resulted? Well, certainly not the secure environment those supporting prohibition promised, right? Right? So how about admitting that prohibition in the name of 'prevention' is just not what it portends to be. In fact, the only thing prevented is the exercise of right - and cops are the ones who end u dying over this pathetic drama.

Stealing was considered a "petty" crime, while just carrying a firearm, a right, was deemed the crime of the century. Today, the same damn thing is happening except it is "drugs" rather than alcohol called the root cause, that if just addressed with prohibition, all would be well. Here is a thought, lets put that THEFT back on top of the list as the High Crimes. Theft of Rights being the highest of all crimes. Sic our Men and Women in Uniform on those who are stealing, and set other Citizens on par - blowing away those who engage in High Crimes right there in the moment when and where the criminal is caught red handed!

Instead of institutional THEFT, oh like EBT revenue redistribution, has to be exposed for what it is. Government is not charity! Oh Oh there will be MORE stealing if we do not have taxes taken and then given to them ( you know, do the stealing for them). Bologna! Let them try to steal and see them face an armed population empowered to defend against that stealing!

Cops have so much more authority over the POLITICIANS than they realize. Chicago cops are demonstrating it out of poor morale. I wish you guys would do it out of empowerment! Forget the drugs, forget the guns. Forget the "prevention" congame. You are sent on a duck mission when sent to prevent. Instead, do stay fetal until you witness and or are told of an actual crime, a theft, a rape a murder. Focus on what DID happen, rather than trying to stop what might. DO that and watch the people commend you more than you could ever dream of.

Theres credible people talking from 35th street saying that a new order is being drafted by the white shirts along with copa, alderman, the mayor, and the doj that when encountering a shooter, we are to shoot the gun and not the isiot holding the gun because after all guns are the ones to blame and not the shooter. Allegedly guns are atking hostages and forcing them to pull the trigger. I believe their best evidence is from blazing saddles where the sheriff's gun takes him prisoner. If you havent seen that movie than you will never learn bc supposedly they are using that scene as a primary tool in training on how to prevent future crimes commited by guns. Now had Ari owned a junk of the insurance business here Rahm would never have dared cut the insurance.

I have started emailing my alderman and I have asked all of my friends and relatives to also do so and ask to have the insurance reinstated. The city council could restore the insurance any time they chose to.

Well if any of you working police have a minute email your aldercreature hey it cant hurt and ask your family and friends to also do so. The Rahm did not just hurt the retirees it also hurt those that will someday retire

At least he is trying to create jobs, een if it means that package delivery to Chiraq will cost more.

He knows that extortionist Jesse Jackson's days are numbered and Al Sharpton may flee the country to avoid prosecution. He would then become the nation's Chief Poverty Pimp.

What would a practical answer to this problem be?

A. Hire enough cops to cope with the problem and motivate and protect them then prosecute the offenders. Hear that Ms. Foxx and Mr. Dart.

or

B. Get Sergeant Dave S. to come out of retirement and pose as a FedEx driver.

Used to do that with D/S Barb McDonald and you could see that her ego was bruised but she had no recourse. There's more than one way to skin a hack.

Someone needs to make a FOIA request to see what he gets paid and what specifically are his job duties. Sounds like a waste of money to me even if he is a good guy. And fed ex and ups should stop delivering in the hood.

I don't believe that Andrew Holmes is drawing a salary from the City of Chicago for any of his assistance. I truly believe he is simply committed to improving the quality of life for all Chicagoans.
