Thank You Cubs

The Cubs overtime check hit the other day. We've been counting on that money to fulfill a desire of ours we've had for quite some time now:

It's been over 40 years, but we finally got it.

Ah, the greedy money pit...While I never condone living beyond ones means, CU accumulation is becoming more and more of a crap shoot if terminated. Our union should be fighting to keep it safe so it isn't dangled over someone's head to force retirement...That is if we had a union!

WOW - a Gremlin X. A poor man's Muscle car.

Seriously, any new car was the dream of many in HS. MANY would have taken a new Gremlin X - as most could not afford ANY car in HS.

If you had some real money, a Javelin SST with a V8 was the better choice.(if you liked AMC)

I remember two guys in HS who bought new cars their senior year - one bought a Ford Mustang Mach 1(351) and the other a Duster 340.

The Mustang guy worked his ass off in HS at the local National Grocery Store. Not sure how the guy with the Duster bought his. Most were lucky if they could use the family car - which was no muscle car.

(If you really bought that Gremlin - good luck with it. If it's in pristine shape like the picture- NICE!!)

Today, some kids want a brand-new car as soon as they get their license in HS. A friend in Highland Park said drive past the HS and it looks like a BMW Dealer's parking lot.

He said it's hard to deal with a daughter seeing all her friends drive up in a brand-new 3-series. NOTHING less than new is acceptable. Talk about "peer pressure" and kids locked in on "brand names."

It's one thing to hear them say, "I will only wear North Face or Nike." It's another thing to hear them say, "I want a BMW - and it better be new."

Does that mean you are now selling the Yugo? I'm retired paying off my health insurance. It's time to unload the Pinto and step up to the Yugo.

My grandparents gave me their 5 year old used 1976 powder blue Gremlin in 1980 with about 15000 miles on it for $1 so I didn't have to pay sales tax for the amount it was worth. I drove it for over 4 years and put on about 75000 on it then gave to my brother. He blew the engine when the oil pump failed 2 years later.

The lesson here:
You don't wanna take a 10 segment furlough for the next few years.
Lest ye miss out on a whoole lotta O.T. money.
See, the Cubbies are young. So, they're gonna be doing the long run into the playoffs thing for years come.

Not too bad, SCC. With a little metal flake paint and a pair of fuzzy dice, the Hooters girls will wriggle right out of those orange hot pants. Make sure the back area is comfy, though. Some deep shag carpet would be cool, but to really impress the chicks and express your creativity, you could customize your mobile love shack with one of these:

I don't think CPD had them but I remember the 1974+ AMC Matador squad cars. Pretty decent (LAPD ordered a ton of them).

there were three kids in high school with those, two brothers. a little amc club.
leno's garage showed an old ad for the gremlin where it zips into a spot and pisses off the big car driver who was about to parallel park. he gets out to kick the gremlin driver's ass, but the gremlin pulls a quick u turn, confounding the upset driver, who throws his hat on the ground while chomping his cigar.
you wouldn't see aggression or smoking in today's adds.

Back in the mid 80's a buddy of mine bought a Gremlin. He pulled the inline 6 out and dropped a small V8 in it. Bigger trans and new rear axle. Needless to say that little death trap was an absolute gas to drive and ride in.

CPD didn't have Matadors.
LAPD didn't buy as many of the 74's.
AMC made some bad changes, one of
which was they made the car quite a
bit heavier than the preceding two model years.

The 401 engined 72' and 73's were pretty respectable.

The best cars LAPD ever had (until the 94' - 96'
9c1 Caprice with the Corvette engine and iron heads)
were the 383 powered Dodges and Plymouths they
were running from 1961 - 1969.
