Angelo Mandile? Wow frank valadez, you lost absolutely all credibility now. You realize that Angelo can't even figure out 2+2 right? Yeah, he's a try hard but you are making someone a detective. He might be ok at aimlessly locking thugs up for several misdemeanors and city offenses everyday but he will not be relied upon to put an actual case together. The Merit list for Detectives was determined before the first list came out. All names that were originally submitted and chosen are the ones that will be on the lists. When that list of names runs out, you'll see an announcement for Merit packets again. So basically, the newest Merit picks were chosen before the first list even came out.
Some reeeeeeal winners on that merit list.

I see everyone has a problem with merit, but then you have a person like the broad from 010 who did a year and a half on probation, another year bouncing around as an "impact zone" foot patrol, and then 6 months of driving around the merit sergeant in a made up "homicide/ag batt team." I'm sure she'll bring her vast experience with her to the detective division, after all, she deserves it since she passed the test.

I recently retired this was going on 30+ years ago same old procedure and it will never change. If your "blessed" "Clouted" or are paying the elected "tax" your in, without that if your promoted you fill in the cracks, expect to be a beat copper for your career anything else is a "bonus" no sense letting your blood pressure be raised relax collect a check twice a month enjoy the circus, enjoy your family back up each other, stop getting involved in ghetto nonsense retire and enjoy!
Remember young coppers your looking out the windshield making memories the most important are with your families, age comes rapidly before you know it your retiring and looking into the rear-view mirror remembering the past memories with "your family" and making whatever more that you can. the job is not worth missing time with the family,enjoy your time off,take a quick trip somewhere with the kids, this job educated my children, paid off my home, my bills everything is free and clear, in good health work out 3X a week, teh best times on the job were when I was off and spent with the family.
You put on a uniform and like a costume that people in the play put on become someone else for a few hours,when you take off your costume your the person your family loves that is what counts! God bless the police everywhere! Thank you President Trump for speaking out in favor of police everywhere!

Seriously I lost all respect for Valdez. Mandile is the best he could come up with for merit?? He is as dumb as they come and a complete hard on. I feel sorry for any detective stuck working with him, because I can see him trying to cut corners and play tact all the time. Ya, he gets a lot of guns which isn't that hard all these days, because him and his team are the only ones in 010 still stopping people and being proactive. I wonder how many detectives they will end up hiring by the end of 2018. Supposedly another detective class will be starting after the summer. I assume since there hasn't been an opportunity to make detective's in along time there must be a long list of merits suckups trying real hard to get made. The only positive thing about this whole mess is hopefully there are enough merits that will be made that they have to push thru enough people off of the list. A shitty silver lining to the whole situation...

I do have one question to ask: can someone please explain what it means to be a "merit" promotion as well as what does it mean to be a "clout" baby. How does your promotional system work? Thank you.

Before the judge or clerk at 26th & cal asks A.M. if he swears to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth, they should ask him first to recite the ABC's followed by the spelling of the words "DOG" and "CAT". When AM goes 0 for 3, the judge and ASA's realize that they're about to question a big greasy 4-year old who is only going to get himself and everyone around him fired. This clown's promotion is and will forever be considered a slap in the face to every hard working officer from 010. The least deserving officer in the entire district was handed a merit promotion. Hey frank, good luck getting your tac teams to do stuff now. Can't wait till this one blows up in Frank's face.
Great way to make cops work harder. Keep pushing those that actually wanted the promotion and worked for it by studying for the test and actually scored decent enough to actually make detective because they know the fundamentals of being a detective, get pushed further to the back of the line.
That's why you have look out for yourself and that's all, because if you don't that same sap you helped because you were trying to be nice, will get the promotion over you even though he knows the job less.

Remember this, please. When you Interview Police Officers concerning an investigation, it is not called an Interrogation. I know you have a problem with this distinction, from personal experience. It is called doing your job in furtherance of an investigation. The protection of the Police Officers is paramount. Hopefully, now that you are a Detective, you will keep this in mind.

back in the day the detectives exam was based on logic questions, question from a book Fundamentals of Criminal Investigation" criminal code and some general orders. Well, of course you had to study your butt off so the clouted and the stupid were not promoted. So in came quotas but that was ruled against the constitution so they brought in Merit. How can someone who has never done a lick of police work or held admin jobs do a meritorious job that merits a promotion to detective? And, you ask yourself why the clearup rate for homicides in around 20%

Then dumped by that same Lt, because he was a goof. Lost his gun on a volleyball trip never reported that until the Dept. asked him about it. Got in trouble serving alcohol to his volleyball team the list goes on with this guy. Told a Sgt he needed time on the end, turns out he was working a election poll and called a 10-1. His Sgt that was holding his slip almost got dumped over this one
Not that I am defending the Commanders here...But they were told to submit 5 candidates - in some districts - and 4 candidates in others. The candidates either were recommended by their immediate watch supervisors, had the nerve to ask for it, or were recommended from outside sources..very few of these names were handpicked by the nominator (At least on the district level). I wonder how many people submitted their names for consideration? I'm betting that of the five picks, the Commanders probably didn't receive more than 7 or 8 choices. Most people are afraid to recommend themselves, and feel that they should be approached or asked based on their work accomplishments. Unfortunately, we all know it does not work that way. In the end, it's the merit board that has the ultimate say so; supposedly based on how you did during your interview. In the end, the result is the same; hard working officers get passed by for the race, gender, clout, and doing favors for bosses. The whole system stinks. Perhaps instead of listing the nominator, list the merit board personnel that pushed through the name, along with an explanation of how they meet a "merit" position.

As far as lazy, this guy prob did more work at one point (sound impounds) than 90% of the watch in 006. Yet there will always be some jealous loud mouth idiot who will be quick to let everyone know how they dislike the guy. No this is not James.

To help out our NYPD friend, a "merit" pick is an officer who may not have scored well enough on the test to be promoted. The officer is submitted by a sponsor (Commander and above) based on thier merit (allegedly). Merit meaning the officer's working history and apparent ability deserving of promotion to detective. Detective's still hold the rank of police officer, but are paid more as an investigator. In a promotional detective class, merit postions are usually 20% (sometimes more) of the class. The CPD has attemoted to legitimize the merit selection process, but I think the consensus is that it really hasn't. Many meritorious selected detectives deserve their promotion....sadly, many don't. I hope this helps you understand the merit picks, as it is very different to how the NYPD selects detectives.
AM is not a team player and only out for himself on this job. He can go out and play the 6 year tac game but he's clueless and has an IQ lower than Whigham..

A pretty reliable source said that his buddy spoke to a member of the DOJ at a Christmas party and they said that the city was going to make 4 Detective Classes of 100-150 in 2017. So far 2 down and 2 to go. This source may be on point!! Lets keep our fingers crossed!

He stuck with selecting members of the District which is the right thing to do. You didn't get picked and now you are crying like a child.
