Stolen Spot?
We certainly hope this isn't true - it makes a mockery of the process...well, more of a mockery we suppose:
- Lots of crying going on at HQ on Thursday around 1430 hours when they were reading off the new D assignments. Only the heavy went North (and by heavy, I mean so many phone calls came into S.O.'s desk that he had to start prioritizing who's heavier. Some unlucky Commanders are going to have hurt feelings). Take a look at the names when the assignments come out and you'll see what Im talking about.
On a side not: The CAPS guy from 018 in the D class withdrew and requested to be sent back to 018 instead of going to A/S
That's a bad move if true. You either deprived a rank order person of a spot, or you made your clout look bad.

In other news, area south detectives starting January of 2018 will no longer have the 10 hour day. They are returning them back to the normal schedule like the other areas. Also, area north violent crimes are going back upstairs at Harrison and kedzie which is a good move. Allegedly area south is going back to the old schedule because with so many detectives on the horizon there is no need to make south so enticing they can just put people where they want. So it was good while it lasted. Trust me when the bids come out I'll be moving from area south to central or north. This place is a hell hole, until the switch happens I'll milk the ten hour days for as long as I can then I'm outta here.
The caps guy did go back to 018 but he was off the list. He wanted to give it a shot and had a talk with some dics during field week and realized it wasn't for him. No harm no foul. He was off the list, he earned the score he had and if he deprived one person from it then that person should have scored what he did...
Kinda reminds of sgts. and Lts. back in the day when Chuck Williams was still around. Some were known to have said, "they better not send me south" and when word got around to Williams, that's exactly where they were sent...FAR south. Be careful what you wish for!
If you want the promotion (Detective is considered an appointment), you better be fully prepared to accept it wherever it takes you. Still no shortage of pampered people on this job...nothing changes.
A couple of questionable 3 or 4 year people went north and of course a few dollies and former bosses daughter. Lots of do nothings got the spots they wanted because of heavy calls and clout, others were left to fend for themselves and were at the mercy of the list and didn't get sent where they wanted. Phone calls are a real bitch...
I don't blame him either, I wouldn't have given up anything to go to area south. This place is terrible. The ten hour days are just lipstick on a pig. It might look pretty but it's still a pig. Area south is a terrible place unless you are in one of the good spots. Otherwise the sgts are bad, the detectives are haters and hostile and there are a lot of lazy irritable people here who pass their work onto you. I liked area 4 better but came here when it consolidated. Any of you kids who actually picked this place out of the academy got duped because it's like a day care mixed with Mr. Gs stepping club. If you have the choice go central or north, the ten hour days aren't worth the nonsense here.. by the way, some of the sgts are really good but some are really bad too. The Lt's and XO make everyone's life miserable. If you choose south be warned and really consider what you want. Detectives are the most adult and professional people in this department, somehow area south day care lost their way. Might as well just go in a beat car than deal with the area south headaches and drama.
He's a which scaredy cat. Him and his caps buddy that was gifted a meritorious promotion to sergeant for handing out paperwork and fielding telephone calls in the 18th district! Can you believe this department?? Hide in a pussified district caps office for years and get promoted !? Hopefully the merit moron gets sent to englewood, harrison or one of the shitholes down south.

Who in their right mind would give up a detective spot, especially one that was handed to you meritoriously? A/S? Yeah, lots of cases, but well sought after for the schedule. Perhaps this person was afraid of working, either more that 8 hours and/or any kind of overtime. I guess 018 CAPs office has a less-that-8 hour day.
He's been in caps over 15 years. Nice guy but NEVER did a lick of police work! Not 1 arrest or case report!! He only has like 18 years on. They have a female with like 5 years on hidden in that office for the last 3 years too! Maybe time to take a closer look at what's going on in that caps office!
The Fact that in these days/times some1 has to rank where DTs are assigned is a kick directly in the nuts of a cloutless Copper. Just like when a White Shirt says to younger Coppers at a domestic "Hey, I haven't been to a domestic in about 7 years!"

The disturbing recent promotions are the CAPS Officer from 018 and Angarone’s Secretary that made merit Sergeant. What constitutes a merit promotion? We will never know? No, until the department truly defines merit, and makes it open to everyone.
You cannot expect such a man to conduct himself with honor. He didn't get his way and he quit. So goes the CPD.

Heard all the black detectives, except one, went South. Not a very "diverse" assignment. Wonder if Area South, which already has mostly black management and office staff, has other motives.
The guys and gals I knew in the D unit had to work. There were/are not too many " slow" spots available. You have to want to be an investigator not a bullshitter. There were/ are too many people that have bullshitted their way thru their whole lives no bullshit!

Didn't know the 10 hour schedule thing was set in stone, I heard about it but wasn't sure they finally decided but I figured it was gonna happen the way they were talking. Makes me glad I didn't end up bidding south. South isn't worth the nonsense and click i.e. cat fights among the dics Up there. Lots of haters and lots of back stabbing in that place.

Uhh.. The answer is simple for me pal.
As a former dic now in central and formerly of south I gotta say I can't blame him. Yeah the 10 hour day in south was nice it was a teeeible area to work. The detectives themselves aren't worth dealing with. Some good guys but the others are just lazy clowns and the bosses are usually south side political spots. No good bosses worth their salt go south, those are reserved for the approval of pflager in 006 and Beale and the roseland reverends and community leaders. For me I'm much happier here south, once I got here I realized it's not just about the 10 hour days but from what I've heard the ten hour schedule is leaving the detective division all together.
The CAPS guy withdrew before the assignments were read out, plus more people signed up for area south than the available spots. 41 people asked to go south and only 30 people are going, the rest are going to central.

Clout kids made their calls on day 1 and confirmed it by the end of week 1, the wish list is only a barometer and was probably equally split.
If you made the Score, it's your perogative to choose or reject the D2a even after a bs assignment to a land far-far away.
Talk about "taking a spot", if your a Merit, you should expect to get leftover Areas and Watches, there's no Seniority used to determine your Area either. Everybody is Management for the rest of the year. Waiting for another class to go in and he could have tried to Bid out.
Gotta get those feet wet first.
There was never any big deal driving to A-S, just mileage, gas and that every case is at a hellhole location.
A-C was far but had the best bosses and a world class Homicide Team, but still every case is a hellhole location.
A-N was always the prime spot for the Northsider, just some of the bosses there were squirrelly nitpickers, a few nicer case locations but majority of crap comes from decrepit 011,015, 025.
It's only a job, a well paying and rewarding job.
Too bad he didn't give it a chance.
If they say Once a Detective - Always a Detective...
then the same applies with being a CAPS 4-LIFE Officer and there are many of them.
Even in the Bureau, there's a CAPS-like cubicle assignment somewhere for the professional pencil pusher.

The guy left before the assignments were created and because of a family illness.
The breakdown for assignments were 37 to north. 65 to central. 30 to south.
75 people requested North, obviously that wasn't gonna happen. 41 wanted South so several people couldn't get it.
I can't believe so many people are whining, what did they expect? There are only three options, hopefully there will be an Area West someday. People are complaining about driving to Central, yet it's probably the best area to work in.

and guess what ends on june 30th of this year?? That's right, the contract. the intention of the city is for the 10 hour day to be gone in area 2. Ask your union, they already said the city mentioned it will be on the floor for debate and is already planning on negotiate on other compensation but what the city is clear on is that it wants a uniform schedule. If the city/department wants to pull a meigs field approach and tell the officers that its switching schedules in January of next year then it can, expecially since the contract expired and that particular work schedule is getting negotiated it can. if it doesn't work out or pisses people off then the lodge can/will file an injunction not to do it but a judge wont allow it and it will be settled in contract negotiations. so, yes, in short the city can do it and it is the word around. the city actually now jokingly calls moves like this the "meigs field" policy..

When they are asked to do something they piss and moan non-stop. Get your facts straight. 10 hour days are not going anywhere in A/S. After the initial pilot program the dept agreed to keep it and would only drop it if vast majority of personnel wanted to change back. Also this debts class coming out Sunday, out of about 150 new debts south is getting about 30. Yes, 30. The new Det class starting in academy soon will be about 130 more new Dets and area south is getting 0. Yes ZERO. Stop the spreading the bullshit.

Given that there are only a handful of Area Four guys left I suspect that you were never there. In fact, I'm thinking that you've been a detective for about three years and you have been a miserable prick since day one. Been hearing this claim for years. Your claim defeats itself. If they reopen area four (which is what the rumor is, not that area three would move), they would take dics to staff it. Now south is short again. One more time Mr Area Four, bid out now since life is so bad for you.
Where did you come up with that line of Bullshit? The D unit is filled with clouted up do nothings that show up grab the keys and you don't see them until checkoff. When they are asked to do something they piss and moan non-stop. The inequity is precisely the reason for the lack of clear ups and the non clouted being inundated with picking up the slack for the aforementioned Slugs.

Been that way since i can remember! About ten years ago working homicide i remember my partner and I getting banged several days in a row. On the 4th day of getting something everyday i looked at a full sheet of Det. working, so i figured we would be good on this day. Well, about an hour before check off, and looking forward to going home and spending the evening with family, we get a fucking job! I was pissed and bitched to the sgt about it. Later on he called me in and apologized and said to me ( while pointing at the sheets)
" would you want any of them handling your family's shooting"? I said wtf, why are they here in homicide then? "Because we were told to". WTF!!!!
have all merit sergeants , detectives assigned to gang drug related shootings and murders they are the best and brightest , just can't pass a test

We are short about 10 people we average 2 murders a night and every 3rd day some kinda of police incident!
And NO we don't need juvenile processor on days we have a few desk dollies from the last batches of so called detectives!

18 dist caps guy left before the assignments were given. He didn't leave because he was going south - that is nonsense - more people wanted south than they had spots to give - same with North - central is the only place getting people who didn't choose to go there
So personnel investigations crew keep whining about how the IAD reject Sgt made his call to go down to HR just to fuck up the their "I don't know how to work the streets anymore" privileged spots and how hes pretendinng to wear his big boss britches and cracking the whip, all the while he's sitting pretty doing absolutely nothing but sitting on file cabinets full of unapproved files of poor mopes waiting for a "sorry but no job for you" response from the CPD
