Pension Padding
- A Cook County judge has ordered the halting of an unusual police retirement pay tactic that critics said improperly padded pensions and played a role in a scandal that sent a retired suburban chief to prison.
For years, retiring police officers in west suburban Countryside had been given a one-time $850 pay bump that, through a controversial interpretation of Illinois pension law, dramatically boosted a retiree's pension. It has boosted the amount some retirees have individually collected over the years by more than $200,000.
The state has long deemed the tactic illegal, as has the city of Countryside, which funds the pensions. The suburb stopped setting aside cash for the spiked portion of pensions five years ago. But pensions are set by separate boards controlled by officers and retirees, and the suburb's pension board kept paying out the more generous pensions anyway to new retirees.
Here in Chicago, we have numerous persons, who never passed a single promotional exam, collecting six-figure pensions that they never would have otherwise qualified for. Lawmakers like Shortshanks, are able to roll numerous part-time pensions into something that can only be described as overly generous, along with post-retirement gigs. Hell, even Luberman tried to steal a pension from the CPD, combining time from numerous city departments into one giant pension. That was blocked, but a commentator says he is somehow listed as having 17 years at the CTA, without ever having driven a bus.
Serious fixes are needed, but there's no one serious in charge.

Your commentator is right. Go to the Better Government Association website and punch in the last name of Huberman. Pension outlook says 17 years with the CTA. WTF!
It's the Chicago Way.
Shhhhh, not too loud. The state wants to consolidate all pensions and run them from Springfield. Can you see what will happen with the state running them, they can not even pass a budget.... The way it is is fine. So what if a few pension boards play games but eventually they are caught and everything goes back to normal. If the state takes it over, bye bye pensions....
Never forget that retirees have to pay for Health Insurance thanks to our liberal, crooked mayor.
Luberboy has 17 years of his mommy and daddy donating to crook county Democrats and Daley....
Everything is fine so long as it's the other guy that gets caught stealing. If Chicago can't run a honest system, and they can't, let the state or the feds do it. Taxpayers are going broke supporting pensions that are way more generous than what they get working till they are 62.
Da Lube can drive my bus any time. He is one good looking man.
I think I have to sit down now. I am getting a case of the vapors.
Now, kees me you fool!!!!
Lieutenant should be the last pensionable rank!!!!!!!!
As per a previous SSC story Huberman was hired by a firm that will eventually run a Chicago casino when ever that happens. This guy is really connected.
Fire Departments are deeply saddened...because now that others are doing this so out in the open, their endless promotion to the older folks to Chief for a short stint at the end of their careers done to boost pension payout is now in jeopardy.....

How true and crying how broke they are pathetic liars!
Shanks Daley gets 3 govmint pensions as will Rahm, Lil Louse Gutierrez and so far 2 for PrickCanker, Mendoza & too many others to mention.
Nobody complaining there. Oh yeah, they earned it.
There should be no pensions for elected position (nor unelected board members etc.)

Put the pension fund phone number on your speed dial and keep calling and complaining about it!
Go to their board meetings and pack the room with complainers!
Make their lives as miserable as yours is going to be, thanks to their bullshit!
You have to do more than just complain on a anonymous blog. It's your future, or lack of same now....
What do you have to lose? Your getting fucked now, and they are trying to make you a whore! Fuck them.
It is probably true about the CTA part. If you have a city job, and then go to the CTA in any type of management or executive position, they give you your city time towards their CTA pension. You would be surprised at the amount of people that do 5 yrs at CTA and then get a 25-35 yr credited pension while getting a city pension already. Now it gives them 2 pensions.
