This sounds like another well-thought-out idea:
- OT: Kind of applies to the city and their ability not to think things thru. There are thirty, yes 30, rental vehicles on the 2nd floor of the 009th District parking garage. What are they for you ask??? Summer mobile!! Now mind you, these aren't Taurus' or Explorers. They are various types on Nissans. And who's going to drive these you ask?? The P.O.'s detailed to summer mobile. They have no emergency equipment, no CPD markings and out of state plates. Please tell me how that is going to work out???? I smell a disaster.
Someone else claims that these cars are going to be replacements for actual marked units coming to the Summer Mobile detail. So where are those 130,000-mile marked units coming from? Who has actual marked cars to spare nowadays? We know Deano gave away the store for a few hundred cars last Contract, but how many of those went to the D-unit, how many went to specialized units, how many went to assorted exempt members? Because Deano didn't specify and no one we know ever saw an actual accounting of vehicle purchases, so a brilliant move by the previous administration - Trust Rahm! He'd never screw the police!

UPDATE: The Department stripped all the marked cars from Forensic Services for Summer Mobile? There isn't a Forensics car that has less than 130,000 miles is what we've heard.

With all the retirees they are looking for 14 people to work Memorial Day weekend including Monday Memorial Day. I don't think anyone has volunteered which I don't blame the officers for not doing it enjoy family time. They also said if no one volunteers they might cancel RDOs, and go reverse seniority. Now the question if you are RDO on a holiday and they cancel your RDO is it double time?
Funny someone saying the D units got new cars!!! No the D unit hasn't had any new cars since 2007. The Districts that have 8, 9 and some even have 10 tact teams got the new cars. Do the math that's where all the xtra cars went to it definetly wasn't the D unit. Most of our Fusions and crown Vic's left have 170,000 plus on them, the new cars we just got were 2014 Fords with 40,000 miles old tact Lt cards
024 has 4 (four) tact teams and has been having foot post guys fill in on beat cars in an attempt to staff the Watch properly. Paint have of those "tact" cars blue and white please. They could answer a call or two too. Can I have a mission # squad?
I wonder how many of those cars that were "bargained for" by FOP ended up being assigned to CPD on paper but "detailed out" to other city agencies like they do with our manpower?

On the money again SCC, with the company logo on the cars, Enterprise rental has had the contract for decades since the 1980' for alleged covert vehicles they cannot rent. It took Enterprise two decades to remove Enterprise sticker from the trunk lid. The old dope boys smelled the police a mile away with these cars, with all same models and markings. Many of the brains trusts renewing the contracts all these decades are richer then Gold coast residents.
The "G" should look who has been signing off on this company since day one. It was never open to bid The bosses just handed off the dealings to the next clout baby crook and retired to an estate on a beach. .
Many a story from the old days and cars seized and asset forfeiture unit selling them, if the unit is still around, selling high line vehicles for spit to connected dealers. These crooks got a nice service fee back for these high line cars. The old days produced many a clear title vehicle with no liens.
Word is that cars are coming from HQ house mouses that are given department vehicles. Their vehicles will be replaced with the Nissans in the parking lot. What a fuckin joke!
I've seen 3 different E.T.'s recently and all were driving unmarked Chevy sedans.

Shots fired all the other day. Cops on view it, see car flee, bail etc. Bad guys leave guns behind before bailing. Car is taken in car jacking etc. So cops protect scene - don't touch anything - and order ET to process guns and car. Dispatcher comes back and says ET's called back and said it would be 4 Hours before they get out to process scene because they tied up and don't have enough manpower - so just recover guns yourself and tow car. This Dept. Is a joke for a big city Dept.
Districts across the city are so under staffed yet they keep adding to these B.S mission, tact and baby tact teams.
enough is enough if the beat cars can't be staffed trim the fat on these teams. Staff the districts. We all signed up to be the police and answer calls not wear jeans and ask for a paper car to clean up after us.

There is only one entity to blame for "cars" issues and that is the collective bargaining unit. That is among the core purposes it has, a common item as required as a firearm!

I do recall back in the late 60's and early 70's that rubber magnetic pads with the CPD stgar on them were put on the front doors of rented cars and unmarked cars and used for special employment. Then around 1979 sergeants in the districts were given unmarked cars to drive because of a shortage of marked cars. It seems that everything that is old is new again. It happens because of poor city planning for one. I say take all of the cars away from every exempt member besides the top 5. They don't need them. Then look for all of the civilians who have take home cars and take them away. i do recall in the Intelligence Division in early 80's even some spouses had cars.

Per the contract, if you are REQUIRED to work your RDO on a holiday, you are compensated with 20 hours comp time, and an additional 4 hours your choice of time or money. Triple time actually, but not the big CASH payday some would think.

Read your contract.
RDO canceled on a holiday, the powers that be offer you 20 hours time due plus 4 hours pay or you can take all time. I was lured by the thought of double time last summer and found out it was that instead. To which in the future I say no thanks.
Besides Chryslers, Nissan Altimas (whether rental or no cash down 96 month finance plans), these models are the ones that are highly sought for stolt - jacked cars used in many drive-bys.
Put an out-of-state or bought it yesterday plate on the car and you might even attract a redbull adrenaline rush for a young buck po-po chase. And, I'd be leery of sitting in the community in one or leaving anything of value within.
As for FOP negotiating with Rahm to provide new cars was a huge mistake of the Contract Committee,
compared to anything we gave up, wanted or couldn't get.
There's nothing in our job description that requires a vehicle (like it or not) - it's just a basic necessity conveyance to get to and from in quick order and transport of personnel or arrestees. Either Rahm provides cars or not, it's his to decide regardless. So the guise of new car agreement was no win for the membership and an FOP giveaway.
What is important is that the vehicle you drive be in safe working order, which its repair is the responsibility of Rahm.
Since he trimmed the Motor Maintenance to bare minimum and doesn't pay the vendors, the FOP should have bargained with the Mechanics for support.
And another thing about MMD...get together and support the guys fixing your cars.
The District that buys a lunch or pastries for them every once in awhile will find it helps out a bit and that a little courtesy goes a long way. Equally shorthanded, overloaded and with scarce parts inventory, just remember that they were just as screwed over by Rahm as we were.
FOP could have bargained for compensation for Officers using their vehicle use that have us traveling to far off locations of any assignment, detail or event.
Rahm never borrowed a dime to singly bail out CPD (or MMD) and as far as he's concerned both are expendable.
Unsafe vehicles are just another reason to stay fetal.

You get paid just like you would working any holiday. Time+½+holiday-comp-time-option.
Cancelled RDO on a holiday is double time and a half. Do NOT volunteer if you're already lowest in seniority. Make them pay a premium for your time.
But every time the supt and the mayor talk about the CPD as becoming a more transparent and model dept that every other police dept is going to want to follow because of the most up to date training and best equipment will be provided to rebuild the trust between the community and the police dept is a total crock of shit. Go figure, but I guess it does sound good on the media to the stupid people.
I don't know who received all of these new trucks. Gang Enforcement Central has one new truck. At one point last year we needed a few cars and got three unmarked cars and none of them had the lights or PDT mounts. Clearly old bosses cars. The brakes on one of them grinded so bad it barely made it back. I believe they took them back and we may have gotten 2 in return.
UPDATE: SCC, where is the thread on districts cancelling officers RDOS on Memorial Day Weekend? 1st watch has 10 mandatory spots, and 3rd watch has 14 mandatory spots. Guess if you thought you were lucky with your RDOS falling on the holiday weekend, think again!

You're already prohibited from smoking in a Dept vehicle. Don't smoke in the car and you have nothing to worry about.
This problem is easily solved. Take the tact Lts and Captins take home cars away and you will immediately have 50-60 very nice low mileage cars put into patrol where they should be. There is no reason for them to have these cars just to drive to work in. I can't believe the city allows this with all the budget problems. Everyone should be driving their own cars to work. What waste! Surprised the media hasn't done a story on this.

There wouldn't be such a wait time with ET's if the commander would stop putting ET's and PFI's inside. He has four secretaries all ET's and two PFI's printing out photos like you do at walgreens making SGT's pay. There's at least 20 ET's working in the firearms lab....the list goes on and on. Of the 110 budgeted for the unit more than half hold inside spots!

Actually Tact in 024 only has enough cars for the tact team. There isn't enough cars for the Burglary team on Days or the Mission team on nights. They usually take marked cars if there isn't a leftover tact car available. Quit your bitchin' about taking jobs. It's 024, not the ghetto. You can hours without getting a job on the Northside.
I love my brand new Impala with XM Satellite radio & remote start. I don't need emergency equipment because I don't plan on being proactive or pursuing anything other than the occasional late job for some killer OT and a nice meal each night. And I sure the hell am not rushing to any job, no need whatsoever to drive faster than the limit to get to a scene. Sorry that you guys on the beat cars sometimes have to wait hours to have us show up, but that's not my concern. We're short just like everywhere else on this job, so make sure you get your coffee, snacks and paper before you go to do that relief guarding the crime scene waiting for us to show up and process it. Remember… Four hours guarding a crime scene is four less hours of humping from job to job to job. As far as anything getting forcibly removed from my car while I'm processing some scene in the ghetto? It's the property of the police department (my only property in that car consists of a cheap, $20 Home Depot toolbox I carry my odds and ends in). They can loot the car to the frame and then set it on fire for all I give a fuck. Stay safe all, and remember: 'Fetal is the new cool'.

Same here, paid $1466 a month, but only for a few months. Had sufficient quarters and was able to get Medicare when turned 65 years old. Not inexpensive, but Medicare and a supplement plan is less expensive than $1466 a month. Oh, and fuck you Rahmmie. You are a POS.
I thought the problem was not enough cops? Why do we need more cops if there not enough cars to go around now. Lower the manpower to the level of the cars and the problem is solved. With thinking at this level I could be mayor!
Years back, they detailed people from headquarters to the streets for 90 days when some boss thought the schools were out of control. Well I was a Sgt. In SOS at the time and ran into an IAD Sgt.out in the 8th district who was physically shaking when he came across a battery in progress, he was more concerned with jerking over coppers then breaking up the fight. I had to threaten him with using force on him if he continued to mess with working coppers. He went into 8 and wanted to get a number on me but the W/C refused him.This is what they put on the street for the summer.
Young coppers do need a course on defensive driving. They drive like goofs, sorry but it's true. Just look at how many cars are wrecked each day and rarely are the police made the driver at fault. I always knew when you need the need to speedbutjust plain reckless is dumb. Stay Safe out there.

You know I get cancelling days off for large scale events such as NATO and the Cubs going to the World Series, but adding certain Holidays is a JOKE!!! It is NOT MY PROBLEM the department is so SHORT STAFFED!!!! I could care less if we are the lead story on "World News Tonight." I have missed many holidays with my family and I am just tired of it. You can have my s--tty duty availability check. It is not worth it. Let me save everyone the suspense 4th of July and Labor Day will be cancelled too. There is no mystery why morale is so low!!!
With all the rental cars the city could have you do some Ubering between or on the way to your jobs to make extra cash for CPS. It's for the children...;)

Agreed with the above, its not by my problem we are short staffed. Only good thing about being in a ghetto district is my seniority is high enough so I won't have my weekend cancel.
I'm counting the days until I'm off this crappy job.
I also saw Mike Lappe driving, he lives by me. That's his own car paid for with his own money.
Get off his back. He's doing a better job than most of us do.
Hey a month ago I saw Lappie from the Pension Fund driving around in am unmarked car. We at short cars in the District and he gets a take home car. Who's taking care of him now
So Lappies personal car has M plates....not
I say let all the 2-3 wonders detailed to summer use their super commando 4 door jeeps. They can take the tops and doors off. Now that's a proper summer mobile.

The large number of ET's and PFI's are working inside because they were juiced in to be promoted and are still juiced in to get a 6 hour a day assignment inside.

You know I get cancelling days off for large scale events such as NATO and the Cubs going to the World Series, but adding certain Holidays is a JOKE!!! It is NOT MY PROBLEM the department is so SHORT STAFFED!!!! I could care less if we are the lead story on "World News Tonight." I have missed many holidays with my family and I am just tired of it. You can have my s--tty duty availability check. It is not worth it. Let me save everyone the suspense 4th of July and Labor Day will be cancelled too. There is no mystery why morale is so low!!!

OT: So Mr "i have 8 yrs of law enforcement" assclown MP from 005 gets into a car chase and wrecks a brand new unmarked explorer, gets burned in a foot chase after about five seconds, and then comes on the air, huffin and puffin, and says " i lost control and tagged him"... is this guy serious? Dint know who you're talking about, but you'd think these guys would learn after striking a vehicle and killing someone on the way to a shots fired call. Couldn't believe how they were flying around the other day going through red lights.
We have plenty of cars. Hell give the bosses 2 cars each along with of the chosen ones. Don't you get it yet, no one cares about you patrol guys. The real work is done at headquarters and at the mayors office. Bet ed's car the one with the door locks that don't work will be replaced before you get a new ride.

I retired and had free insurance until I hit 65, the bam, cost for my wife and and disabled son, plus my medicare supplement was $1550.00 per month plus no vision and no dental, they didn't pay for mammograms or routine female exExams. Rahm refused to cover us so FOP and Dean worked with Labor first and we now have Aetna, which I hope never leave us, no deductible or Co pay for 292.00 each. I can live with that but Rahm is looking to screw over active members so beware.
Speaking of cars. This is the week that SWAT told the merit bosses that all their gear will be left at Homan Square. Careful out there boys and girls it will be a slow response especially on midnights. Wait a minute all the suck hole Sgts have take home cars. They will be able to respond immediately. Problem is they are useless.

Sitting in the parking lot at the Ag school or Mt. Greenwood Park doesn't actually accomplish anything. I'm not saying you're the one doing that, but maybe someone should point that out to those officers. Drive up and down the streets your families live on. Pull over some of those cars racing down 111th passing everyone on the right and almost causing accidents. They don't live here. Summer is coming. Maybe some of those cars filled with weed smoke and bangers from the east side of the district should be dealt with. No, just stay fetal and let them victimize your friends and families. If the police start policing when they come over here with their ghetto activities, maybe they'll be discouraged from returning. Maybe parkers, movers, ANOVs, tows, impounds, arrests, etc. will make them find another place to hang out. You can watch your movies in the Target parking lot after the arrest. Park the car in front of a random house somewhere in the neighborhood. At least the few houses around there will be safe. Hiding in a parking lot doesn't help anyone.
There is only one entity to blame for "cars" issues and that is the collective bargaining unit. That is among the core purposes it has, a common item as required as a firearm!
Shame on Rahm, and the city council, for using this as a tool to lean on police. People are and will quite literally DIE because of it.

You couldn't be more wrong. The department is responsible for providing the vehicles needed to accomplish the job. It's not a collective bargaining issue, despite the fact that Dean was dumb enough to think it was. Guns are purchased by the officers carrying them, not by the department. Radios, computers, cameras, vehicles, etc. are all things that the department needs us to have in order to do the job. They are required to provide those things. It's a budget issue, not a collective bargaining issue. Cars aren't some perk of employment that needs to be negotiated and arbitrated over.
