Beach Mayhem Continues
- Two men were injured when they stabbed each other Tuesday evening at North Avenue Beach in a domestic dispute, police said.
The two suffered cuts in the fight over a domestic issue about 6:15 p.m. near the 1600 block of North Lake Shore Drive, according to a police media notification. One was in critical condition and the other was in serious condition, said Chicago police First Deputy Superintendent Kevin Navarro.
When the fight broke out, one man pulled out a knife and the other grabbed a bottle with a jagged edge, and both were stabbed in the fight, Navarro said.
But don't worry!
- “I can tell (the public) the beaches are safe,” Navarro said. “This is one incident that occurred between two subjects. There’s really no way to defend an argument between two people, but just want them to know that we were right on the scene doing everything we need to do to keep the beach safe.
We guess the beaches are "safe" if you don't happen to be caught in the middle of a knife and bottle fight. Or catch a stray round from the intermittent gunfire. Or fall victim to roving bands of Amish youth out for Rumspringa.

I run on the lake front about three times a week. During the runs I carry a 380cal. Its easy to conceal and a lot of us are now carrying this type of handgun off-duty. During one of my runs, a group of about 8 of our outstanding citizens from the west or south side began yelling racial slurs at me and two other runners. This occurred at 1000hrs. near 1000 North on the Lake Front. I and the other two female runners had to stop because the group started blocking us from running. I pulled the 380 handgun, but the insults continued, it seemed they did not consider the weapon too threatening. They were in the process of surrounding us and some in this group decided to back-off, but the others continued with their verbal assault. The three or four that were backing off, caused the others to do the same. They then ran north yelling at other runners. I was going to report the incident, but decided it might be a bad idea with the way this department is handling incidents involving the use of firearms. I thought about what occurred and I believe the 380 although convenient to carry and conceal, lacked in its appearance to resister a threat. Bottom line, I did feel I needed a bigger gun and seeing how these assholes reacted, I'm going to a bigger handgun off duty. The lake front is unstable and not safe, not like these merit dip shits are telling us. Be safe and be armed...........

The lack of manpower in the policing profession is a constant problem. The so called leaders all talk about doing more with less, but in the real world you need warm bodies to be able to do this job and respond to these types of incidents. As a licensed citizen, I've had similar experiences with roving band of "Amish yutes".
You should see how these predatory POS will run away faster than a jack rabbit when they notice a RED or preferably more highly visible GREEN dot dancing on their chests before they get within 10 yards of me. It always begins with them asking me some stupid question as they try to close in on me. With the deadly dot dancing, I tell them to "get the fuck outta here". The incidents generally occurred after midnight in a desolate location.
No police paperwork. No shots fired, warning or otherwise. You can not underestimate the intimidation factor of that dancing dot on center mass or the head. While I always first resort to my iron (or tritium) sights, CPD friends can't offer any rational explanation as to why the CPD doesn't endorse zeroed-in lasers.
Aside from lasers, if you want the most easily concealable weapon in existence (you can palm it and even fit it in a shirt pocket), check out the L.W. Seecamp S/A pistol in calibers .32 or .380. Inexpensive holsters are also available that imprint as a common wallet.

I hate to compare our department to any other, But LAPD doesn't wear shorts and they also wear their vests UNDER their uniform so they don't have the luxury of taking it on and off for lunch, bathroom etc. Also...bike units wear shorts as a way to avoid their pants from getting caught in the bike chains. And last but not least...shorts make you look like an ass clown if you are on regular patrol. Saw a SGT in a north side district (where else, right?) wearing them all the time and he was on a homicide scene on tv and looked like a full on tool. The public will not like you anymore in pants, shorts or doggone capris.

Maybe it's just me, but he blow it. I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. Forget about he should have had a 45, 357mag, or a laser pointed at the shitheads, is everyone crazy. I would have lured them into robbing me and the two females and maybe even took a few punches to make it look good. It's a hate crime from the get go and he had witnesses. Even with the 380, lure them in; shoot as many as you can, this was a golden opportunity, and he blow it.

He was probably on the bicycle unit. The shorts is part of the uniform. Learn the job.

Our district has beaches. We would patrol on foot more if shorts were aloud for patrol as they were when I purchased a couple pair. Shorts help when jobs are on the 3rd floor as they always are. Why is this an issue? Shorts appear friendlier and keep officers more cool to better handle assignments. Please make this happen Sup. Its gonna be 93 degrees out tmrw and its not even summer yet. DO bike officers wearing shorts look like less of an officer? No. Please let anyone willing to wear shorts do so during summer. We have taking hard lately and a little perk wouldn't hurt. Thanks

Came on the job in 65. We had to wear wool pants year around and had no A/C in the squads and we lived through it. Quit whining and go out and do your job

You must have left the job a long time ago. Captain is now an exempt rank. It is not like the days of yore. When a Captain or above takes a bounce, they land at the rank of Lieutenant.
A .380? Cute little gun. It could probably stop an angry tabby cat. Sometimes you just gotta have a gun made for grownups.
Shorts are for fools. When you get into a fight and fall into some bushes, rocks or slide across some concrete you'll wish you had more protection.
If you ever have to work in a real police district and get knocked to the ground wearing shorts, your knees are going to wish you had big boy pants on.
