What Cops Know Redux
We always liked this book:
It didn't inspire us or move us. We liked it for a single reason...or many single reasons if you want to be specific.
We knew these guys.
Not all of them, but we met with and worked with more than a couple. A few were guest speakers at the Academy. We met many others via old-timers and family gathering and mutual friends. Some were our bosses. We heard a lot of these war stories before they ever saw print and it was kind of cool to see them again, years later, wearing the same uniform that they wore.
Reporter Peter Nickeas, no relation to the Nickeas on the job, has done an updated version to the original book, taking a much smaller sample and no biographies the way Fletcher did at the end of every chapter of her book. It's amusing to see how much has changed....and how much hasn't.
UPDATE: This particular story amused us to no end:

UPDATE: This particular story amused us to no end:
- One cop I know had a gambling problem. We would not let him handle money for the golf outing ’cause it wouldn’t turn out right. We didn’t want him on a search warrant. If we did, we had to fucking hold the money ourselves. So, yeah, I was actually surprised they made him a commander.
They never did get that money back from Bubblehead, did they? One of McCompStat's biggest promotional errors ever.

Documenting the decline and fall of Chicago from the front lines.
When Bubblehead wasn't scamming in 011, he acted like he was the "Real Police".
They should have seen it coming. Bubblehead had such a reputation for skimming off the top it should have been obvious at the golf outing. After every drive instead of yelling, "FORE!", he whispered, "two."
Bubblehead is the biggest piece of s**t ever to walk the halls of 012.
Cops with problems? Ya gotta be kidding me.
That individual was just using his predictive
analytical skills honed over decades on the job
to take custody of said funds, exploit the odds of
multiple sporting events, earn a profit, fail to notify
the IRS because he acted as a fiduciary for a charity,
and accept multiple hits of dopamine as the only
reward for his custody and investment services.
Clearly a man who accepts responsibility, takes
initiative, leads by example, and displays integrity
worthy of a management position.
I'm selling bubblehead bobbleheads for charity. By two and get one free.
"...the biggest piece of s**t ever to walk the halls of 012..."
Any votes for "Smilin' Jack?"
I purchased and read the first book many years ago, great read.
Only in chicago the Feds should handle his ass
O.T. Two of my kids took the latest police test (against my advice). Both are equally intelligent (yes, I know, why would they take the test) and they just received their rank order. One is in the mid to upper 300's, the other is in the upper 3000. The higher score is bummed out and doesn't think they will get called.
Does anyone know how far down the last list the city went?

The bigger question is who is his clout?
I've gotten to know McCarthy since his firing. One night after a couple of cocktails I told him that making Bubblehead a commander was the worst promotion he made. He agreed and said every cop from 12 he's talked to since his departure has said the same.
I loved the original book!
I did enjoy that book. Very entertaining
was he merit like most command staff
I read that book while I was in the academy and then again when I hit ten years. Great both times, but amazing how perspectives and outlooks change in ten years on the west side.
When it was fun to be the police.
The people were able to sit out on the stoop, walk to the park, school and work, and shop with a purse full of money without a worry day or night. Stay out late on the weekends and go to church on Sunday.
Law and Order was replaced by apologies and decriminalization.
If Jugghead & Foxxxx co-pen a book it would be What PO-PO Don't Know.
I hear there are trips for Academy Recruits to the Dusalbo museum for a dose of cultural awareness.
The Untrusted Police are the problem.
We're doomed.
Stay Fetal.
They knew there was a problem when his golf outing ended on the 15th hole...
"Whaddya mean, don worry about it, what's a couple holes among friends"
Such a crook, should really be in jail, and how the powers that be all these years, (and that's not saying much), have overlooked this POS and his BS is why this department is FUBAR.
Off topic, hey SCC, just saw on channel slime news that McNaughton has been granted immunity for his testimony today at 26/Cal in Van Dyke case. That should be interesting.
Kim Foxx is setting up CPD for extreme failure, she is trying to get cops to rat out each other with the threat od being prosecuted. She Hates CPD and is very racist
Nothing has changed from when it was written, domestics still always on the top floor, people jumping off buildings downtown, criminals are still stupid. the circus is alive and well, no shortages of clowns. I'm glad I read this book long before entering the academy, and have processed some of the described crime scenes in the book, the knowledge of the interviewee helped me process what i was actually looking at and learned to have a laugh or two in the end at its stupidity. like one detective said in the book, one day we'll be looking at your body. true.
I would like to thank Connie and all the old timers involved in sharing their stories, those still here and those long gone. many thanks and rest in peace. this book saved my life in so many ways, thanks SCC for sharing this its almost a look back in time but nothing has changed. those are our stories now too.
Ask Baby Bubble (brother Mike) about the time he discovered his paycheck short. A call to finance confirmed wage garnishment for defaulting on a loan...
A LOAN ON WHICH EDDIE FORGED MIKE AS COSIGNER WITHOUT HIS CONSENT OR KNOWLEDGE
Now imagine what a piece of shit like Eddie Kulbida would do to a stranger, coworker, dope boy, country club/golf course manager, etcetera if he would do something like that to his own family.
"Commander" Bubblehead...... what a fucking disgraceful piece of shit. But I guess it wouldn't be the CPD we all know if the crooked, connected and incompetent weren't rewarded and pushed up the food chain.
EXCELLENT read. I've also read other books by Connie Fletcher. She's spot on relating the stories from the coppers. Local girl. Very pro-cop.
He can be a dick but he'd never screw anyone.

Have them mention that they love the DuSable museum.
That will raise their scores with Rahm and FatHeadEd.

Since roughly 1/2 don't show up for the power test your sons are theoretically 150 and 1500. Of those another 1/3 will fail the power test, drug test or psyc test meaning your sons could be top 100 and 1000. That would be 1st class and probably 8 months to a year out for the other one.
I had that paperback, oh must have been in the 90's before I came to Chicago to try to become a Cop here.

Bubbleheads clout is none other than Alderman Eddie Burke!
"rewarded and pushed up the food chain"
How true. In the V.A. it's known as "being
kicked upstairs." Sexual harassers, incompetents,
pets involved in near-fatal or fatal errors. There's
a wait time to avoid it looking obvious, but they all
somehow get promoted and/or moved to another
city/location with an increased regional salary and
moving expenses paid to boot on top of it.

Ok Mr./Mrs. know it all.
So you think that burke being bubbleheads clout is bullshit?
Do you know Bubblehead? Did you know him when he was a punk kid hanging out on Archer Ave?
I knew bubblehead before he got on the job. I know that he had a close relative take him to burke to make sure he got hired. A close relative of his was tight with burke and made sure he got promoted quickly. How do you think he has gotten away with all the thievery he has done during his illustrious career? If anyone else was accused of anything he was, they would be facing 30 pending. Why don't you submit a FOIA request for his CR file. Now it may take you months to read all the complaints, but they all have the same MO of theft.
Ask anyone who has had him for a supervisor what they think of him. I am sure they will tell you to watch your wallet and valuables. Ask the 007 district PO who heard Bubblehead was taking up a collection for his ill child. The PO walked up to Bubblehead and thanked him for taking up a collection for his ill child. Bubblehead tells him "I don't know what you are talking about" and walked away.
You go and stick up for this thief and believe that he that he earned that exempt position.
Before you call bullshit, go do some investigating PPO.

They lose about 90% from the time of the test until starting a class. That means, assuming your kids pass the drug screen, POWERtest, psych, etc., that the 300 would be in the first class and the 3000 in about the 3rd or 4th class off the list.
Good luck.
Is this really true? If it is, holy shit is that guy a jagbag.

This shit is been commented on at various points during the SCC existence.
As for the "Bullshit Burke is his clout" comment:
How else would you explain a Commander that is Known to be stealing from special events funds and during evidence seizures and forges his brothers signature on a loan document avoiding Termination and Prosecution?

Relax, they will both be called and sooner than you think.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was a female officer in 009 (she's since retired - thank God)) that had these same kind of financial issues/problems. She pulled all kinds of stuff with borrowing, cc's, loans, etc. etc etc.
I'm sure some of those in 009 can relate to this CO's story.
Don't forget the old 012th District Commander Ronny Nash!! it was 2 for him & 1 for you, unless you brought him a whore & then it was thanks for thinking of me & what watch do you want??!! But you also had to through "Red Nose Fisher" Nash's Bag Man!!
12:35 PM
Don't say anything bad about Ronnie Nash. When he was a captain in Fillmore, he brought love and religion into the sinful lives of hos like Queenester and me in his office. Behind his closed door, he counseled and baptized us.
Stole money for Fundraiser for Bill's kids too
Bobblehead Kulbida is the Patron Saint of all the thieving and scamming Exempt Bosses on the CPD...That's why he hasn't ever been written up or admonished..
Just FYI and to try to sell some more books:
"What Cops Know" is now available on Kindle. Otherwise, it's just third-party sellers and a paperback for $800. Glad it's alive again and thanks to all Chicago police.
