5,000 Guns

  • It was another violent weekend on Chicago streets. Six people were killed and there were more than three dozen hurt. But the Chicago Police Department said they've hit a big milestone in their efforts to get more guns off the street.

About 5,000 guns, that’s an average of 24 guns per day, were taken off the streets, but the murder rate is still high.

There have been 391 homicides this year, four more than this time last year.
Five thousand guns - sounds impressive. Until you run the yearly totals ten and fifteen years ago - CPD was taking ten thousand, twelve thousand guns a year out of circulation. Now we know that many of these "seizures" wouldn't fly under current law, but back then it was a pretty big deal. It certainly would be interesting to run those totals against crime trends and the neighborhood of seizure. Maybe get a clue as to why so many guns are being located on the streets of certain zip codes.

When you get a straw purchaser who purchased, what, 40 guns? And got everything plea bargained down to one offense, and got a misdemeanor, with 6 months probation... It doesn't matter where they're coming from - Foxx & Co. aren't going to prosecute anyway...

This City is screwed.

The problem is, guns don't commit crimes, people do. Take the violent people off the streets and problem solved. Leave the poor guns alone.

The guns live in the Banger zip codes.
It's like when you see an ultra-upscale
automobile parked in your neighborhood.
You just know the car is from elsewhere,
just visiting if you will, and not up to any good.

Doesn't add up. If so many are in the "fetal position" on the job not doing anything, who is going after the guns? Who is doing the stops and taking guns off people on the streets?

Sounds more like some hocus-pocus, funny math going on.

(OT) looks like the Democrats that have caused all the chaos here all the mayhem are finally looking into stopping the silly shit they have been doing to disparage the president of the United States Donald Trump:

Chicago deflates plan to fly giant pig balloons in front of Trump Tower

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-trump-tower-pig-balloons-denied-met-20170727-story.html

The total immaturity of our elected officials is really disgusting the president of United States will not even fly over the state of Illinois he has been to all states surrounding the state many times. Even bringing tens of thousands of jobs to Wisconsin and he also brought jobs to Indiana and Ohio but here in Illinois with the childish politicians we have like O'Reilly removing the president sign from in front of his beautiful multimillion dollar hotel to people like O'Reilly taking campaign contributions from the president of the United States promising to get the money back and then of course in typical democratic fashion refusing to give the money back!

Maybe now with this extremely stupid idea of the pig balloons they are realizing how stupid moronic they are September 1 fast approaching hundreds of millions of dollars will be lost for policing in Chicago The president tells the mayor he must get tough as the cartage the bloodshed the murders the ventilated bodies are increasing. But the mayor says he doesn't have to get tough he will just add more strategically well that's not working too well for the dead The maimed and their families is it? We are definitely the forgotten man and women of this corrupt city state and county!

It isn't so much that the laws of search and seizure have changed, but more to the point is that the police are now being scrutinized in their enforcement. Can't get away with stuff like in past years. Probably, on balance, a good thing.

This is Fake News, Bait and Switch. These guns are from the Gun Buy Back Program. People from within and outside the city limits travel to this event to make that money. The City and the Supe then used it at mid year for headline. 5000 Guns removed off the streets of Chicago, the Struggle Continues.

If you look up where most of the "vicious dog attacks" (pitbulls) happen, you will find they take place in certain neighborhoods. These are the same neighborhoods are where firearms are a problem.

So clearly, we need to do something about the guns and dogs in certain neighborhoods as they are the problem. They aren't problems in other neighborhoods.

We need to empanel a blue ribbon "Guns and Dogs Commission" to find out why guns and dogs are such problems.

Well, it's "The police are the problem", "Guns are the problem", "poverty's the problem", "education is the problem", "lack of jobs is the problem", etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum.
It's never criminals and illegal aliens, hell no! They have got to be protected by liberal democrats in their sanctuary cities.
Liberal democrats can see what is happening, they know you are going to be a victim sooner or later, they just don't care as long as they get re-elected and can stuff their overseas bank accounts.

""Sounds more like some hocus-pocus, funny math going on.""

Of course it is. 90% are probably turn ins and grabs from Domestic allegations. You never saw a Tac team posing with selfies with some firemans collection after the old Lady accused him of threatening her during another one of their drunken binges. They act like they just caught Al Capone.

Now ask yourself, if you work a busy District , how many righteous pinches were made over the week end where you could put a gun on the offender? Maybe a few, maybe 1/2 dozen in a real busy district. Maybe!

And if you dont have a head to go WITH the gun and a felony charge what does it matter? And what does it even matter if they dont prosecute? This is just the old Vietnam head count bullshit once again.

Back in the day when the City took 10,000 or more guns off the street, most were probably taken for "Failure to register"

And unless you wanted your ass reamed, you had to be careful who's gun you took...unless you were Tac.

RE: Not Barney Fife at 02:50:00 AM, I would guess that many of these guns came off of the dead and wounded trash scooped off of the streets by the coroner and EMS. I would further guess that very few, if any, of the wounded found with a gun were charged with unlawful possession of said gun. After all, dey dindu nuffins. Dat gat juss a fashion statement in da hood.

Millions of guns in a place like West Virginia. People there don't resolve every problem with a gun there. People on the south and west sides love guns. A gun is a symbol of power. The power to kill and rob. The power to stop an " enemy" from taking their life. The enemy is everywhere. Just look in the mirror.

I'd be willing to bet that there are even more guns per square mile in the rural area where I live, and yet nary a one of them gets used for anything more than target practice or shooting deer and varmints. Maybe the issue here is really the people behind the guns (I know, a liberal probably just had a heart attack over that idea).

Peacable people+guns= no threat
Barbaric third world savages +guns= war zone

They can take away the guns until the cows come home and the barbarians will just use knives, or chains, or vehicles, or whatever else they can get their fists on. The problem is the PEOPLE, not the weapons, and yet that's the absolute last thing anyone in any position of power will consider. Optics wins out over truth, every damn time.

Old Task Force Ranger: Back in the 70's if you got a gun you got to go home early. The only exception to that was on the weekends and that was limited to the first team who got a gun. I can remember there were days when half the night watch was at check off roll call because of the guns that were taking off the streets. Back then it was easier at times to get a gun than a drivers license. And by the way, if you didn't fuck up the slip got torn-up the next night. Back then the CPD confiscated some 10,000 guns. Admittedly there were almost 300,000 more citizens living in Chicago and the CPD almost 14,000 PO's. Times have changed. Those days are LONG GONE!!!!!!!

Old retired guy here.
I spent 12 years on tac in a slow district.
Perhaps made a couple hundred UUW arrests.
Never had one arrestee go to prison
unless they were a convicted felon, and that happened only when the were charged with additional felonies.
Confiscate and Destroy was all the judges in Gun Court knew.

The question that should be asked...Was there a documented arrestee with each gun? One per 10 guns? One per 20 guns? One per 100 guns & what were the charges? Where-o-where are these arrestees because they sure as hell ain't getting processed with gun charges in any A/S district I've been.
