ShotSpotter Fail

  • A woman was shot to death Thursday evening in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said.

The 25-year-old was found shot multiple times by officers responding to a call of a person shot about 6:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of West Haddon, Chicago Police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
And according to an e-mail, a Shotspotter fail, and a failure of the neighborhood:
  • Hey SCC, one of those "you ain't going to believe this" stories. The body they found on Haddon Thursday was called in by neighbors. When the cops arrived, the body was surrounded by 4 shell casings, the blood had already coagulated, the flies were in full force and the body had begun to exit the rigor mortis stage, and becoming a bit ripe. Dead 8 or 10 hours before a single call came in. And Shotspotter didn't have even a blip on the radar. What a great use of taxpayer dollars.
Does anyone know the success/failure rate of the Shotspotter set-up? That might make an interesting story for an actual reporter.

Not a "Fail" but a attempt by shot spotter to under report the city's perpetual crime wave. (Sign of the Cross) carry on.

I thought the big selling point of these gunshot detection devices was that it could differentiate between a gunshot, and other loud bangs, like fireworks or car backfires. Something about a gunshot having a distinct signature, different and unique to firearms.

It's not living up to expectations. Going off on fireworks. Not going off on gun shots. Bosses want us to help determine if it is working, but shouldn't this technology be working if we are paying for it? They want the PO to do the job a computer software tester should have done before this technology was rolled out. It's sad to see taxpayer money being wasted in this fashion.

The contract with shot spotter requires the system to be xx% in tolerance, or correct. However, part of ensuring that shot spotter is within tolerance is calibration of the system. The only way to calibrate it is to go out into the neighborhood and fire off some blank rounds. Of course, the city won't allow this.
So, this leaves a loophole for the company...and the system is never really calibrated.

No blip?
Answer: We got nothing
Ask for the money back. This is an evolving,
bullshit system. Their technology is obviously
not foolproof and the cities are paying the price
for their learning curve. Betcha "fails" were not
disclosed during the sales presentations. Company
just got listed on stock exchange. File suit. Chicago
is not a test campus. There's probably some fraud
going on here. Multi-level marketing name dropping
cities under contract. There's a solution for that: multi-level
tiers in pods.

We all know that when things like ShartSplatter are purchased by CPD that there are other [usually $$$] other motives. CPD has had the system for years, most of the time without it was not even working at all. If we had some investigative reporters there were even news conferences held in CPIC years ago with lewinskis showing it off as the latest and greatest.
Fast forward to now and we have millions of dollars invested in this system without any testing or proof that it works ant better that the last 5 years we have had it.
Some one with the access needed needs to follow the money closely on this one as the purchase was too quick and costly. No testing or questions were allowed.

Here is a true Shotspotter story... one day in 011 a few years back, a car calls in an on-view shots fired at Pulaski & Thomas. Foot chase ensues, and the offender was eventually placed into custody. Ten minutes later, while we're still on the scene, CPIC gets on the air to inform us that the Shotspotter hears shots at our location. So there you have it... Shotspotter operates with a 10 minute delay.

According to several news stories I've read/heard (including one by NPR (!)), there is no evidence that Shotspotter actually results in a higher apprehension rate for shooters, or a faster response rate to shootings. Part of the problem is that the shotspotter company actually owns the data sets produced by its operations invarious cities, and I don't think it's ever allowed an independent review of the data or results.

"..those who still care about being the police.."??? You sound like a Kool Aid drinker and a fool. You know what saves an officer lives much better than a shot spotter? Using his/ her fucking brains and not rushing to their death to intercept a shithead to shithead shooting like a well trained Labrador retriever after a bone. Especially when you know that you can lose your job go to jail and get sued for...."being the police". Wake up dummy. The shot spotter ( at a great tax payer expense) is just another political trick to make it appear like we're doing something about the gun violence even though stops are down 80%. until they focus on why we still are beholden to the ACLU and the ISR nothing will change. It's the good old fashioned street smarts police being able to stop people without fear of bullshit lawsuits or "racial profiling" claims that makes all the difference not some fucking app.

ShotSpotter website:

"Real-Time Intelligence to Fight Gun Violence"
• Law enforcement is No Longer dependent on 911 calls with ShotSpotter because it instantly notifies officers of gunshot crimes in progress with Real-Time Data.
• ShotSpotter has been called a "Force Multiplier" because it provides critical information for better, more-timely resource allocation.
• ShotSpotter cities experience an average 35% decrease in gunfire incident volume in the FIRST TWO YEARS of use.
• Police departments using ShotSpotter foster an enhanced level of TRUST with the Community as they continually show up AFTER a gunfire incident.
--------------------
Hey, give the Program some time to season, like in 2-3 years (at $1 million per) until election time.

You have to stop the people who are shooting.

A Chicago sergeant in 15 was determined that a shooter did not fire his gun at a car in front of him In Chicago because shot spotter didn't pick it up although the victim, who was in front of the shooter, heard three gun shots and the offenders vehicle had three gun shots in his own windshield. Not on only was the sergeant a goof but so were the two patrolman (one woman) who arrived on scene. Nevertheless, the shooter drove into Cicero and crashed into several vehicles. The driver/shooter was arrested and Cicero charged him with Agg discharge and DUI. I told the sergeant to beat it after he looked perplexed and had no clue what to do. Grant it, adjoining municipalities can handle arrests stemming from their neighboring cities but relying on shot spotter to determine that a gun 100% went off is idiotic. Evidence and witnesses will apply in court, not shot spotter.

Cicero Sgt
