Soda Tax Decision This Week

So are we going to continue shopping in the suburbs so as to deprive Rahm of sales taxes or are we going to make a slightly longer trip outside of Cook County so Prickwrinkle loses food, gas, alcohol and other assorted items?
  • Cook County's sweetened beverage tax will remain on hold at least another week.

Cook County Circuit Judge Daniel Kubasiak said Friday that he would rule July 28 on the county's motion to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the penny-per-ounce charge, which was set to take effect July 1.

The Illinois Retail Merchants Association and several grocers filed a lawsuit last month seeking to block the tax, which they argue is unconstitutional and too vague. Kubasiak granted a temporary restraining order June 30 that has prevented the tax from being imposed.

Many retailers oppose the tax, which would apply to a wide variety of sugar- and artificially sweetened beverages. They argue that, under the Illinois Constitution, similar objects should be taxed uniformly. Under the sweetened beverage tax, drinks in bottles, or from fountain machines, are taxable. But on-demand, custom-sweetened beverages, such as those mixed by servers or baristas, aren't subject to the tax.
Sugar-free drinks are taxed as being sweetened somehow. Not to mention that the supposed "health benefits" lie is front and center of Prickwrinkle's layoff threats. And the people (or folks) whom Prickwrinkle is so concerned about assisting with their "health" don't even have to pay the tax.

Watch and see. Preckwinkle talked to Evans who talked to the judge presiding over this case.
This case will go in the county's favor. Watch down the line as this judge will get a Presiding spot or a decent gig where ever his so desires.
This one is just too easy to figure out. Judge needs time to write his decision.

I saw the news the other day and a Cook County board member named Richard Boykin was at the hearing, and he said afterwards that this tax is strictly a revenue grab, and he's against it. He also said that cost-cutting measures and the elimination of vacancies would close the gap that this tax would supposedly bring in. It was refreshing to see a politician call it for what it was...a cash grab, and point out that there were other ways to save the money. I believe he was on CH 7.

Ultimately, I believe Bullwinkle will get her way, and then the drive to Bensenville will be for gas, groceries, pop, and maybe even a snack, will begin. Send all your receipts to Toni and the rest of the board. Let 'em see how much sales tax revenue they're gonna lose too.

I love it. Tax people but exempt the greater population that purchase the crap in the first place.

I'll continue to shop outside Crook County because the tax is considerably less in DuPage County or Will County or Indiana. I'd rather give them my money than shop in Shitcago or Crook County anyway. Nicer, cleaner stores with employee's trained to treat you as a valued customer.

I'm gonna throw a wrench in the works the first time I order a fountain drink that's poured by an employee:

I'm going to ask how much of the "sugar tax" they'll be deducting to compensate for the volume of ice in the beverage. I'm sure that 20 ounce Pepsi will be closer to 14 or 15 ounces poured over ice, right?

That, or I'll demand a cup of ice on the side and pitch a bitch, yelling "dis shit right here be rayciss!!" when they say that's extra.

Let's see, first off a bunch of people got laid off because the tax didn't go into effect. So now the tax will pass, and all these people will get their jobs back. Uh, wrong. Jobs positions will be filled but they'll not have quite the same "complexion".

Will those people that don't have to pay the tax, not taxed because they're not Americans? Does being a criminal or illegal alien in a sanctuary city mean your liberal democrat master's won't tax you? Or do criminals and illegal aliens not have an obesity problem?

This tax puts people closer and closer to taking their money out of Cook County. I purchase my ammo when we go to our family's place in Michigan. In Michigan Walmart sells 9 mm Federal box of 50 rds for target practice for only $9.97, plus 5 or 6% tax depending where you buy it. I have not bought ammo in Illinois or Cook County in over 8 years. And if this soda tax passes, we will not be buying any soft drinks in Illinois. Sending the receipts to Preckwinkle is a great idea. Just like the plastic bag tax; this too will fail, and unfortunately put a lot of people out of work. Baby "G"

Even if the court decides that the tax is legal, it won't start, there will be another appeal. The problem is, if down the line it is found unconstitutional, there has to be a way to refund everyone the tax they paid unconstitutionally. Can't be done, so upon appeal the tax will be stayed once again.

The 870,000 out of the county's 5.2 million people are recipients of LINK cards and are exempt, yet the people receiving LINK cards are most likely to have the worse diet in general.

This is so transparently enough revenue that it's hard to believe the media continues to report it as a "health" issue. But these are the same media whores that spouted the red light camera's as a "safety" issue too.

Ya know there is a point being made about how the "poor" aren't going to have to pay this tax. Well, that is the same thing as all fuel tax, the poor don't pay that one either, they get public transportation handouts and exemptions too. They sure won't be paying that gas tax MadAgain slipped in there.

It is time to stop redistributing wealth like this. It is Communism on its face and in practice. It is not just destroying Chicago, or cook County. It is destroying America.
Democrats love their progressive tax code, at all levels of government. All of this, the soda tax too, will continue until we destroy Progessive Code MODEL itself.

As the Founders KNEW - taxation has to be UNIFORM (as in everyone must have skin in the game) or it will act as a corruptive force that is then used by corrupt politicians holding that authority to divide people. It is an infection, a virus, and it really is killing this nation, this progressive taxation.

We must kill it, everywhere it is found. Either everybody pays or nobody pays. That is the line for necessary and proper taxation. America will only be Great Again when we do that right there. Equality in the eyes of the LAW, yeah that, it actually matters.

If overruled again, this tax will go back into the "for later when a new judge is appointed" drawer.

What's so bad about shrinking big Goverment, especially when the County continues to hire incompetent people they really don't need.
Voters should remember PorkWrinkle and her band of Commissioners for this one absolutely silly, unfair, share-the-wealth tax come 2019 election. If Porkwinkle can't find upper management to shed then she is not doing her part.

As for the whole Illinois LINK-EBT corruption and fraud, reduce the payouts, go back to actual paper food stamps and audit the corner stores.

Preckwinkle, when running for County Board President wanted to eliminate the Forest Preserve District Police. Once she got elected and realized SHE is in charge of Forest Preserve Police she decided to keep it and expand it. Dart recently wanted to eliminate the Forest Preserve Police and have the sheriff patrol, but was told by Preckie that the Forest Preserve police are a necessity. The only thing Prreckie got right was that Dart has expanded his Shakman exempt positions. He has hired so many lawyers who do not know what they are doing. This comment may get buried. But please do not. This is by design folks, pitting EBT users against everyone else. Here is my thought on it and most of you having a real job would not know this. When you walk into Walmart or Sam's Club, they offer healthy and fresh pre-packaged meals. Rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes, veggies, etc. You cannot purchase those on a EBT card for whatever reason. But you get candy, soda, junk food. That crap. The anger should be frustrated at the policy makers, not someone who is only getting 5 bucks a day for food. And also remember the billion dollar movies that each Disney movie is making this summer? Well they outsourced their entire IT department. Dell, Microsoft, Best Buy, IBM. We have created a middle class in the Philippines and India. Any movement on those jobs? Negative.

Actually, the anger should be focused at the dumbasses who can't see that those do nothings shouldn't be "getting 5 bucks a day" in the FIRST PLACE, ya know, because they didn't EARN it. You see, hunger is a powerful motivator, to like get a JOB to earn more than 5 bucks a day, heck even that 5 bucks. There is no reason to argue over the AMOUNT or what it can be used for when the premise itself is false and the truth is that government in this country does not exist to take from one to give to another.
