- From our leader at a luncheon at the City Club of Chicago. Emanuel was long gone by the time Johnson fielded the most controversial question of the day.
It came from a police widow who asked how the city “justifies stripping” police widows and retirees of health insurance benefits, which the unidentified woman said has lead to “widow homelessness in some cases.” She was referring to Emanuel’s now-completed, three-year phase-out of the city’s retiree health care coverage.
Johnson said he “wasn’t aware of” the cut that saved Chicago taxpayers more than $100 million-a-year. “It’s an embarrassment to me that that question even has to be raised because that’s not right. I pledge to you I will look into that to see what we can do to stop that from happening,” he said.
He wasn’t aware of this. Is he hiding under a rock. Has not retiree friends isn’t aware that po’s are retiring after 55 because of the health insurance. What else is he not “aware” of. Just how stupid does he think we are

Hoe does a politician that makes over a quarter million a year sell taxpayer streets to a private parking meter company. How does an outsider get a 99 year lease on the skyway? The federal government needs to step in. This is America. Chicago is not a 3rd world country. Next election we need to vote for a Chicagoan . Someone that values work ethic and a quarter million salary. Not these crooks that make millions on the side and screw taxpayers out of the basics. Taxpayers feed the meters and the skyway. Then the same taxpayers pay more taxes. If the country is not a safe haven for illegals that we should not be one. We have enough of our own problems. If yiu want to employ minorities we have many that are unemployed.
He's not stupid. He just doesn't care. Now that the widow brought it up he says he'll look into it. Nah in a few weeks this will be on the back burner and then we'll never hear about it again. All police widows should be calling the mayor's office until its resolved.
Shame on Eddie for even saying that. He should have directed that question directly at Rahm's office.
And yes, it is indeed shameful that Rahm fucked over so many retirees who gave the best years of their lives to
protecting this city (and its shallow politicians) from harm, only to be kicked to the curb.

Nobody cares. After being a Cop (a GOOD COP) for almost thirty years and being retired for 9 years I have to pay $1,500 a month for health insurance which was promised as free life-time coverage. And nobody cares. No Social Security, no Medicare, just a bad back from lugging that gun belt and equipment around all those years. I would still do it again, I always felt it was an honor to be a Chicago Police Officer.
Nobody cares. Former 008th District FTO Andre Van Vegten 65 passed away after suffering for years from injuries sustained in a traffic crash on Cicero Ave. responding to a "shots fired" call in the old Leclaire Courts. He was a good cop, R.I.P.

Wow, just wow!!! Here is the leader of the department saying he had no idea that retiree health insurance was taken away leaving a great many retirees with no insurance. The retiree health insurance issue is something that everyone is talking about, but the leader of the department doesn't know anything about it!? Eddie, you are either lying through your teeth or are so incompetent that you have no business running a police department much less being a cop. My guess is that it is the former.

The retiree's health care case is winding through the Court System and the Attorney's involved need all of our support. That means all of us, because if you stay for the pension, this cases outcome will definitely effect you and what the City can and can't do to our medical in the future. Just a note; the fire department has done nothing to help and if we win, that reap the benefits.
Obamacare replaced the healthcare plans for widows and retirees under the age of 60. Medicare takes care of the older ones.
The fact that half of Eddie’s staff is connected to Ron Watts Shows a much bigger problem than just Watts himself.
City also would pay 55 percent of Medicare support while retiree payed 45 percent. Now they pay none and retiree is responsible for 100 percent but rah had money left so he gave 1 million to the illegals. Thanks ram for taking care of our own. This is the unidentifiable police widow. Thank you for all your support and for all you do. My husband worked 30 years and was guarenteed the great insurance that we had for decades. We needed it through his six year plus illness. To the person above who said that we can use Obamacare, those are the exact words out of the mouth of the elderly female city attorney who spoke in front of Judge Cohen a few weeks ago but she added that if you can’t afford it(good insurance), you don’t deserve it. Her haughtiness permeated the courtroom. It’s unaffordable because of the hugely inflated premiums that Rahm has set through his BCBS Daley buddy.
Supt Johnson did ask me to contact him at the end of his answer at the podium yesterday and I have and he wants to talk about this situation, so we’ll see what happens. It was a kinder response than Rahm or Judge Cohen have had toward us.
I so appreciate being part of the Blue family. Thank you for your inclusion, your protection, your bravery and your support through this.

Young people pay attention. You want this to be you? There isn't anything good about the job besides a source of income, but there's a lot of pitfalls. Why deal with the headaches? They're slowly but surely taking away our benefits. If I'm not mistaking it was only back in 1995 when insurance was free for CPD. You didn't pay for scrips and there were no co pays. Now there's a tier program. People get sick because of the stresses of the job and the lifestyle. Nothing but negativity. Find a job that isn't that stressful. Stick with people who make you feel good instead of people who make you feel like shit like the phonies on this job and the politicians in this city.

Why would he give FTO’s preference. 90% don’t know much. Most of the good working officers that know the streets and the job want no part of the FTO program. Who would want to be stuck with a recruit that knows nothing and who would continue with doing police work with a P.O. right out of the academy who you have no idea if he or she would support you or back you up

Employers now are laying off workers, cutting benefits and reducing healthcare. Also most other jobs have stress and there a few is any where the employer makes you feel good. Just sayin

I hate to be a killjoy, but realistically what is or can Johnson do, even if he wants to. Tell the mayor this is wrong,put 100 million back in the budget. This is a done deal and he did nothing the last three years when the city began reducing the city’s share
Our only hope is that the court rules in our favor with our current lawsuit
