Listen Here Snowflake

The entitled thinking they're better than lowly ol' you:
  • OT- So there was a shooting in 007 and the female detective that showed up gets all bent out of shape because the sergeant told the paper car to go into 007 to do the report because the Area said the detectives were going to the hospital first. This female det gets on the scene and starts yellling and screaming at the officers that were on the crime scene. The Sgt comes back on the scene after having to respond to another job and gives it to the female detective about her yelling at the officers. The poor female detective calls her Lt who then calls the 007th district Lt to find out why the detective got yelled at. Really??? What are we in grade school now?? Someone’s feelings got hurt so she has to cry about it?? No wonder we are in the state we are in.
Speechless.

That isn’t as bad as Gang Enforcement North. Two male cops get into a pushing match. No one is hurt. One of the cops files a CR against the cop and then files a Battery report. The same soft cop files another CR against a different cop for calling him names. To add more problems that copper tells IAD everyone shows up late to work and leaves early. Further claims cops are drunk and drinking in the office. Meanwhile that cop as been involved some interesting shootings and has a drinking problem. What ever happen to boys being boys?

First mistake, in most cases Lead Detectives should go to the scene first to process it and to release manpower back to patrol as soon as possible. If officers are sitting with the individual at the hospital there’s no rush to get there. Patients has to be triaged, examined and evaluated. The Patients has to be seen by the RN, Resident and then the Attending Physician.

Why would the Sgt release the paper care prior to the arrival of the Lead Detective. Doesn’t the order say the paper car should do a walk through with the Lead Detective and E/T. Sgt. should’ve ENSURED that a detective was coming to the scene first. Whenever there’s a shooting, Detectives work in teams. It’s called a Shooting Team. Some Detectives go to the hospital and some arrive at the crime scene. I bet that was all one big misunderstanding. A good Lead Detective will always go to the scene first to meet with the paper car. Hopefully the paper car is still at the scene and hopefully the detective isn’t taken his or her sweet time. Det’s investigation is centered around the intital report.

About the 2:35 comments. Just trying to understand, was the cop wrong for filing a CR again bulling cops, or calling out possible drinking on job. Or maybe he is expected to ignore bad or illegal behavior by one on "the job". Sounds like one filing CR has balls enough to ignore the Code of Silence. Hope that's the case and CR get fully investigated and prosecuted to fullest extent. Need to get rid of bad actors no matter their rank or affiliations.

Ideally there would be Detectives dispatched immediately to the scene and to the hospital. But The DD is short just like everybody else. Regardless no one should be showing up on the scene yelling at anyone. Act appropriately grow the fuck up. Get in your Detective car call the station or cell phone of the beat guys and get the information you need. People need to stop making this job harder then it is. Most do not understand that a det is responsible for the case all the way to adjudication in court. It’s their ass, so yes, they are “in charge” at a scene they are responsible for. Not a rank, but all GOs state that; maintain scene until the lowly detective releases it. That said, there are better ways to talk to your coworkers than yelling about perceived mistakes and or real errors. If evidence has been destroyed, that has to be explained. Once you lose the scene, it never comes back.

I also told him if he wants to come into my lockup to get permission from the W/C as the GO stated that anyone going into my lockup has to have permission from the W/C. He looked at me with a stupid look on his face and left.

I kept saying "my Lockup" just to piss him off. Moreover, if you want to piss off a Detective or just have fun, call him/her "Officer".

Too many citizens and actual police confuse Entertainment with Reality. Detectives are Patrol Officers, not bosses. It was not until Le Roy Martin that they even got different stars. And every time there was a New Chief of Detectives, the next day there were a bunch of old time detectives wearing blue at a District Roll Call. The Rank is now assured by contract, but the reality is that you are not a boss, just a higher ranking patrol officer; deal with it! And remember, there was a time when Detectives were respected by patrol officers. The Detectives that were drunks or unable to spell were left back at the office. Today, with so many young Merit Hacks being made detectives, it is difficult to tell who is really competent. And finally, Nobody needs to be yelling at another copper, especially in an age where if you talked that way to a citizen you would be suspended. The Sergeant did a good job by protecting his officers. When I was a Sergeant, Nobody would yell at my officers, including my bosses. You have to respect each other, before anyone else will respect you. Don't let the Negativity all around you, become a part of YOU. Baby "G"

As a Detective for over 10 years I unfortunately have seen this before from some of my fellow Detectives. They seem to forget that our title code is PO assigned as Detective. Not all of us or even the majority are like that. I look at my job now as one of a support unit to the street Officer. My job is to help you. Some people can get too full of themselves.

The Detectives who display this behavior are usually the ones who are incompetent at their job. They don't know what they are doing so they lash out. We know who they are but most of the time there is little we can do about it. They are usually merit and/or have some type of clout. We could get rid of probably 15 percent of the dead weight in the D-unit and no one would notice. Actually most of us would be grateful. These incompetents get assigned a job, screw it up, then its reassigned to one of us to fix.

ET then flat out refused to recover or inventory a few things the detective wanted that ET knew were of no value. Told the detective " if you want these things inventoried so bad, pick them up in inventory them yourself. Otherwise that shit ain't happening". I think the detective might've been confused because this ET looks young but he has over 25 years on the job. Me & my partner laughed about it the rest of the night

I will say though that at a crime scene the detective is the boss. If a commander says something that may interfere with the investigation or hurt evidence then the d unit and d unit supervisors are still in charge and has the final call. So In any case, if a det wants a Sgt LT commander etc out of a crime scene then they get out. Anytime I’m guarding a crime scene and get an order regarding evidence from a clown whiteshirt I do nothing until I run it past a detective who is conducting the investigation. Might not be popular but it’s the truth.

You're splitting hairs.

Sure, the title is "PATROLMAN assigned as Detective", which indeed means we are still just "patrolman". That said, everyone that "made" detective had to take an exam to do so (of course we won't kid ourselves and say that everyone actually PASSED this test). And as a result, we make more money than any patrolman with the same seniority date. At the end of the day, this shakes out to be a PROMOTION, sonny boy.

So while it may not fit the Merriam Webster dictionary definition for "promotion", at the end of the day we detectives are better than you stupid blue shirts. Many of you need to be talked down to because you're too goddamn self absorbed and entitled. And that combination fucks up my crime scenes. And fucked up crime scenes have the potential to reflect badly on me. If I'm going to fuck something up, I want to be the one at the switches, not some grunt that can't focus on something so simple as protecting a crime scene.

Now go cry to your sergeant about how the big, bad Detective hurt your feelings on the blog.

I was the paper car at the scene of the shooting recently. Pompous (male) dick starts barking orders at the evidence tech. ET tells him " I don't know who the fuck you think you're talking to son. I was working the west side before you had short curlies on your vagina, I know what's evidence and what's not evidence at a ghetto shooting."" ET then flat out refused to recover or inventory a few things the detective wanted that ET knew were of no value. Told the detective " if you want these things inventoried so bad, pick them up in inventory them yourself. Otherwise that shit ain't happening". I think the detective might've been confused because this ET looks young but he has over 25 years on the job. Me & my partner laughed about it the rest of the night

If that detective wanted to he could’ve had that E/T’s written up and he should have. Most E/T’s are knowledgeable so we allow them to recover what they feel is necessary. But some have gotten beside themselves. E/Ts are not investigators. They have no idea what information the investigating detective have received or what’s critical to the investigation. The orders says if the scene is disturbed notify the DETECTIVE, if an officer recovers property prior to the arrival of the detective, notify the DETECTIVE. The scene belongs to the detective. The patrol sergeant is only in charge of the scene protection.

-Someone should’ve got into the sgt’s ass for allowing the paper car to leave the scene. The order says after the detective confers with the patrol sergeant, the paper car, detective and E/T will.... The Sgt should’ve called the Area and clarified if a detective was in enroute to the scene. Why didn’t the Sgt yell at the Area Supervisor when he thought the detective was responding to the hospital first?

-Why would the Sgt send the paper car into the station to start paperwork when the scene hadn’t been processed. Oh, I forgot these Sgts dont Like to stay late and heaven help us if they have to miss check off.

Gang Enforcement North should be disbanded anyhow. I never knew it existed. That’s why we have tact teams. Each of you drunks should be dumped back to beat cars or fixed cta posts. This damn department!

To: tell us more columbo. you sound like one of the 5yr wonders that passed the dics test and now you think you know everything. or... one could argue the scene is the scene.. its secure and not going anywhere. maybe the dic wanted to talk to the vic before he is intibated, wheeled into surgery, expires, or is otherwise rendered unable to communicate. why would we want to waste manoower sitting at a hospital with a VICTIM? of course thats assuming dude didnt just hear shots feel pain

..and you wonder why you’ll never be promoted. The longer the crime scene is up the more evidence is lost or contaminated due to the elements. Wise guy! The lead detective don’t have to talk to the victim first when he has detectives from his team enroute to the hospital to interview the victim. No more Chicago PD for you.

I think the sergeant and the officers need to review their general orders. The paper car is suppose to stay on scene and speak with the detectives. And the detective needs to remember where she came from. We are all on the same side boys and girls.

Maybe you need to read the story dummy. It said the detectives said they were going to the hospital and not going to the scene first so the Sgt sent the paper car into 007 to start the paper. How long is the paper car supposed to stay and wait??

If the “victim” has serious gsw’s It may be smart to hit the hospital right away before he goes into surgery which may mean he’s unavailable for interview for several hours. Sounds like Miss Detective wasn’t happy about being assigned a job and tried to take it out on everyone she encountered. Boo fucking boo, do your job.

The DD isn’t that short they can always pull from other sections. There’s hardly ever a time when detectives goes to a shooting alone unless he or she wants too. Officer Safety first!

Detective here, I handled a death investigation two days ago. When I pulled up the paper guy was sitting in his patrol car. When I got out he said, the body is upstairs in the building. I went upstairs alone and then came the E/T. We collected all of the evidence and found the deceased identification. When I came down the papar guy who was still sitting in his patrol car yelled “did you find his I.D.” I jumped into my unmarked and drove off. Have fun turning in a blank report in lazy ass. Moral of the story is paper car needs to accompany the detective into the crime scene.

He start raising his voice about the canvass and I told him to go fuck himself and when he is ready to talk I'll be here. My sgt at the time told me he was glad I stood up for myself as he seen way too many coppers take unnecessary shot from defectives. He even added further advice that in the future if somebody who outranks me yells at me to just say "I don't have to listen to this" and walk away. Funny thing is, the week after I see the same fat defective working special employment in the same room, wearing the same uniform as me. Needless to say, he didn't say a word to me but when we were getting our radios, I went next to him and sarcastically said "it's my favorite detective in the whole world" and was laughing really loud. He had a miserable look on his face and I never really seen him again.

This has never happened once in real life. Maybe on NYPD Blue or whatever is the latest BS cop show that you watch.

Yelling is never the answer lets not forget, the crime scene belongs to the lead detective. If the initial responding p.o doesn't complete a walk through then shame on the responsible Sgt. If the et doesn't want to collect specific evidence at a scene as requested by a detective then shame on them.
The detective is the only person assigned to that case in its entirety. Yes patrol is the backbone of this department, yes a detectives shirt is blue, yes the p.o and sergeant are supposed to protect the scene and not from the car.
In three, five, maybe ten years from now it will be the lead detective still answering for everything that does and does not happen on this case. If a detective writes paper on what did and did not happen it's the fault of those who didn't know their job, didn't want to do their job or just refused to doo their non. Ask that lieutenant from area five that was dumped and received disciplinary action for not doing what the detective asked to be done and the det documented it in the reports. Big case, Sgt s moved too.
Let's all remember it's the victim and the search for the truth that should guide us on what we do and don't do. That's why we are here. So pull up your big boy pants and treat each other like professionals even if we have to be told something from someone we don't know or like. Sometimes there is something to be learned.

Stop playing words with friends on a crime scene. Check your Facebook later. Quit bragging on face book to your friends to watch the ten o clock news because your on a crime scene with your baseball cap on backwards and you think you might be on camera.

Listen and learn you might be a detective some day and have to process a crime scene yourself and that's the day you will try and remember how the smartest and most professional detective acted, even if he/she gave you directions you didn't want to follow. You won't remember your drinking (det)buddies stories because you know he was a goof. You will remember that detective who forwarded a true conviction. Hell you probably begged that detective for his paper so your sergeant could copy cut and paste his reports for a department commendation, due to the acts the detective documented that did and did not take place.

For as long as it takes! WTF? Do you know how many times a detective shows up at a crime scene and nobody knows anything??? You get the “I don’t know. I’m not the paper.” These sergeants are sending POs home or to lunch and leaving the detectives to backtrack. Listen, I get it. I’ve been on both sides of the fence. But until you’ve had to do a violent scene report as a detective, you might not understand why letting the paper car leave the scene and have to be tracked down doesn’t work.

I have never yelled at anyone in my crime scenes, saying that though I've had crime scenes not protected. Crime scenes where all district personnel have returned back to patrol duties. Scenes where tact teams have scooped up witnesses and tainted possible identifications by showing IClear photos instead of conducting photo arrays. Scenes where sgts are more worried about clearing their cars before a scene is processed completely.

Now back to not yelling, why because? No need to. I just document how everything occurred on the scene, P.O. failed to perform a duty per G.O. gets documented. I've also experienced several lazy ET's who complain about recovering evidence, no yelling. I document that said evidence was REQUESTED be processed and recovered and said ET refused. Sgt orders his cars to clear from the crime scene, that also gets documented per Sgt XXXX he/she ordered such and such beat cars to clear the scene. No need to yell at anyone or get into a pissing match.

Now to all the Detective haters on this blog, while its not a rank it is a promotion. While our 9165 states P.O. Assigned as Detective was probably made up from some detective hater in R&D several years ago. See officers are assigned to OCD, Gang Teams, Tact, Teams, Marine Unit, Mounted Unit, etc.

Detectives, Evidence Technicians, K-9, and FTO's are all a promotions even though the title is still P.O. See for those position officers have to take a PROMOTIONAL EXAM, pass the exam, and get placed on a promotional list based on score. See no assignment to any of those positions.

If officers were ASSSIGNED as stated, then by theory the Superintendent could make any officer a ET, Detective, K-9, or FTO whenever he/she fells like it and there would be no need for PROMOTIONAL EXAMS OR LISTS.They could say, okay Officer X tomorrow report to Area Central Detective Division I'm assigning you to Dectective immediately., they can't.

Look at any other major police department in the USA and you will see Chicago Police Dectectives are so undecompensated and disrespected by their department and I think it needs to change.

This is true... and Patrol Sergeants don’t want to face it. They’re too busy telling detectives how they used to work in the Area. So what! You’re in patrol now so, allow the detectives to handle the crime scene. Detectives do a lot of covering for patrol officers, trust me. Do you really want a f*** you match with the detective who is investigating the case that you f***ed up?

Now, if you want to play by the orders, detectives can request that your patrol sergeant initiate a CR each time the scene is contaminated and have his or her a** written up if he or she fail to do so. Play nice and tread lightly.

Regardless of whether it’s a promotion or not. Detectives have unique responsibilities and that’s why you have to stand there until they arrive. Both are blue shirts, but detectives have certain responsibilities and if you have a problem with that try calling Felony Review without a detective better yet have your sergeant to try it. Try call juvenile screening without a detective, better yet have your sergeant to try it.
See how much authority your sergeant has.

Even Deputies step back at the crime scenes. Sergeants are the only ones confused about their role.

I’d have no problem having the paper car go into the station to do the paper & make notifications while waiting for them to show up at their leisure.
I’ve been in a district for 31 years, 20 as a supervisor and have seen it all too often.

For detectives out there:
It depends on the time of the shooting too. Sometimes when it's getting close to check off, lunch, personal time, etc the officers strong arm the sergeants into "going in the station to start the paper" and if they have a weak sergeant that is exactly what will happen. And it's not like they are writing a narrative of some value....most of the narratives are 5 sentences long; and most contain
heard something "felt pain." These reports are seen by many other people besides the detectives and supervisors, which can be a little embarrassing.
But I do agree that the paper car should wait for the detectives so that they can relate all the important shooting information first hand.

Understanding there are three sides to every story.........

Working in the D's for many years... the first words out of my mouth upon arrival at the scene was always..... "How can I help" ........and I meant it!

Even with the egos, and the macho environment we have to deal with.....I don't remember any major problems/issues... ever. (amazingly..even D.C.s and Deputies on the scene kinda went with the flow with the Det.s)

I don't know what it is like now, but handling officers shot and police involved shootings always required an attention to detail, and procedures to be followed that most who have not experienced it...would not fully understand what is involved in the process.
I hope the unqualified clout merits can help you. Stay Safe....take care of each other...we are all we've got left....Praying for all of you.

Old retired detective here. When I became a detective in 1969 an old describe told me. Never yell or tell the beat man anything Ask and you will get better results. Followed his advice and for over 30 years never had a problem with any P.O. and I always remember where we all started. To me all a detective was was a P.O. working a different assignment.

Great advice, but follow my advice and move on in life. Do it for your own sanity.

By far the best comment on this post!
You’re a wise man!

I have moved on, been retired 10 years and loving life. Sanity, hell I still have all my marbles and most importantly my health

First of all asshat she’s a Defective not a boss. The only one that yelled we’re the incompetent clouted aholes, a good proportion of those were drunks. The true leaders never yelled and got their point across without the need to throw temper tantrums.

How many times have we all waited hours for detectives to go eat before showing up on scene? CPIC and everyone else wants answers before detectives even order food! Then you call the Area for notification and pretty much read them your narrative and detective that shows up knows NOTHING! So wtf does she think she’s yelling at??!!

Why would a sergeant send the paper car into the station, prior to the arrival of the detective? If an arrest is made the paper guy will also have to testify in the case. It’s a great idea to keep the paper car at the scene so that he or she can see things through. At least until he talks to the detective.

12/09/2017 10:25:00 PM

To: Apparently you’ve never been at a crime scene where it takes 2+ hours for the detectives to show up.
I’d have no problem having the paper car go into the station to do the paper & make notifications while waiting for them to show up at their leisure. I’ve been in a district for 31 years, 20 as a supervisor and have seen it all too often.
That being said there are also some great detectives out there too.

Sergeant the General Order says... nevermind. Whatever happened to those cute little department issued phones that were in the WOL’s Office, you know the ones, the ones that are supposed to be signed out by patrol sergeants so that officers can make notifications from the field. The ones that are still on the charger in the WOL’s Office. Sergeant maybe you should go into the drawer and start signing out a department issued phone so that your officers can make notifications from the scene. Trust me they do not have GPS on them. There’s no legitimate reason for sending the paper car in unless they have made an arrest. Reports can be done at the scene and notifications as well.

If assigned to that crime scene the first thing out of my mouth would of been
"Listen here Ms. Patrolman assigned as Detective, Go fuck yourself". Way too many people think that Detective is a promotion, its an assignment. For those that still don't understand I'll make it even easier. If you can't give a Patrolman an order, is not a promotion.

To all the primadona detectives out there, you only wanted your title to seem like you are something important and cool, but we all know your just puppets in this fiasco of a department called CPD. all you want is to clear your cases and do as little work as possible, who are you kidding? you can tell your bullshit stories to your family and friends who aren't the police but you aren't fooling anybody but yourselves. your clearance rate for homicides is pathetic, you can't find a homicide offender with a map. so go back to your coffee station in your cheap suits and spandex leggings (very professional), and tell yourself your the best cops ever. what a joke you are.

Now, if you want to play by the orders, detectives can request that your patrol sergeant initiate a CR each time the scene is contaminated and have his or her a** written up if he or she fail to do so. Play nice and tread lightly.

^^^^

Thanks for the invaluable advice. If I ever give a shit about crime again, I'll keep that in mind. Don't worry about "covering" for me. If I fuck up a crime scene, oh well. Case gets tossed? Oh well. I'll admit when I fuck up but to be honest, I don't care at all. Get my sgt to write me up for contaminating a crime scene? Even if all that happened was everyone laughed at you, I would still not care. Now, what I will agree about is that we should all get along and behave like adults. Theres no need to insult anyone or to boast about control and power, it just makes you sound pathetic. Just treat people nice and things will usually be smooth sailing.

First off the Sgt is a goof. Should never write the paper without checking with the Detective, things change quickly. Detective was a crybaby. But let’s not forget, there are a ton of goof Sgt s out there who couldn’t tie their shoes without help. Don’t confuse your rank with my authority.

HUH? are you serious? Check
with detective before writing the paper? For what reason?

Not sure about your premise. I’ve found the less you put on the original case report the better. The detective can correct anything that was previously reported but by putting too much on paper opens you to scrutiny on major crime scenes very seldom what’s originally reported turns out to be true

I'm guessing you scored shitty on the test, if you passed at all, and you don't have enough juice to get promoted. So go back to the station and screw up another case report that a detective is going to have to fix when you're done. Don't blame the clearance rate on the Detective Division, we're all in this shit together. BTW if detectives are puppets of CPD, and you're a copper, you're a puppet also, you just don't get paid as well. Now go home and get shine box or study harder for the next exam.

as a detective I always try to get out to the scene or district as quickly as possible. I remember the days of waiting on the Det to show up when I was in patrol. That being said, nothing infuriates me more than when I get there and find out that no paper has been started and I have had to wait 8 hours for the arrest, case report and inventories to be done. If your going to call then have your stuff ready to go. I could care less if you want to rape the city for overtime, but seriously I do have things to do other than watch you eat pizza and screw off before starting your paper.
