Conflict of Interest

  • Gov. Bruce Rauner has issued a ban on legislators financially benefiting from state property-tax appeals.

Rauner issued an executive order Friday calling such representation "a clear conflict of interest that must end." It is effective immediately.

Rauner has often accused Chicago Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan of benefiting from high Illinois property taxes because his law firm deals in tax-assessment appeals. Madigan has maintained he operates by a strict code of ethics and within the law.

The order directs the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board to prohibit lawmakers from participating in appeals before it.
A lot of pols have side businesses that financially benefit themselves, including law firms. After all, who is going to get you a better deal in front of the Tax Appeal Board?
  • Madigan and Getzendanner
  • Thompson Colburn LLP (John Cullerton)
  • Joe Schmo Abogados
Rauner is making it personal by attacking Madigan's side business. Now if he could do something about Klafter and (Ed) Burke.

11th Ward GOP backing Ives in bid to unseat 'double-agent' Rauner

“She’s the only true Republican on the ballot,” Segvich told Chicago City Wire. “I know Rauner is a double-agent. I’ve known he is a Democrat. I laughed at him when he called me to ask for my endorsement back in 2014.”

Segvich said one of Ives’ first orders of business once she becomes governor should be moving to restructure the state’s troubled pension plan system. “That should be at the head of the list,” he said.

That's why SCC listed him at the bottom other article. Also an alder-asshole, so State Ethics Rules have nothing to do with him.

This executive order has no teeth. The politicians will bring the big clients into the firm and some lackey represents Madigan and or Cullerton will move the case along. There needs to be legislation where the entire firm is not allowed to do taxes. Kinda like a police officer who has a law degree cannot practice criminal law.

Lake Co. (Illinois) real estate taxes are now almost the highest in the nation. The school districts and county board are out of control and continue to raise taxes to the max:
https://patch.com/illinois/highlandpark/district-112-board-approves-maximum-tax-levy-hike

Sales taxes are lower than Crook, but it's a bad idea to move there.

Burke? If you want to do something just check the property tax he pays on that mansion on the South side in his ward. Way below what he should be paying for new construction. Yes, property taxes and appeals have become a source of income for the democratic political class

This is a great move. I bought my house a few years ago on the southside of Chicago. Taxes went up about $3k after 1st year. I appealed and was denied with no reason. I hired an attorney who did the same thing and somehow was able to get my taxes reduced $1,500. However, half of that so-called “savings” was the fee charged by attorney. Just another scam by the Democrat shyster politicians. I wish Governor Rauner would do more shit like this to drain the Illinois swamp

Ethnics schmethics. We have our very own "ethically-challenged" folk on the 5th floor and spread throughout this department. Friends and family of the clouted moving up the chain of command and getting prime spots in the department is a constant joke. The biggest joke is the one who scored so well on the Lt exam, but vehemently claimed Milwaukee is a state. Unfortunately, it is the members of this department that have to take "orders" from these spoon-fed idiots.

Then over here we have this go to this website if you don’t know your property tax identification number which is called a pin:

http://www.cookcountyassessor.com/

Then with the pen jump over here to the crook county treasurers office and put your property tax number in here;

https://www.cookcountytreasurer.com/getacopyofbill.aspx

Now you can see your tax Bill for the first payment due for 2018 make sure you’re sitting down and relaxed and you have somebody around in case you pass out when you see how high the taxes of jumped just saw the mayor and the rest can give more to the illegal criminals and also to the felons who they pander to!

No wonder why people are rapidly moving out of this corrupt city state and county They are literally taxing us to death!

Kevin Graham Kenny hauser has the mayor made the required contribution to the Chicago Police Pension find that was due January 1, 2018? If not why not? And if he did not when is the court date with all the attorneys? God bless the police!

This is pretty meaningless. Assessment appeals cases only go to the state PTAB if they are first denied by the County Board of Review. So the (elected) Cook County Board of Review or the Assessor's office is still free to hand out assessment reductions at will. Any little bit helps though...

As the Schmibune reports 1/23, Rauner gets points for a nice try, but sadly little else.

Madigan, Cullerton, et al, don't bother taking tax appeals to the State board -- they go directly to Uncle Joe Berrios for joy. Cook County is a Soviet colony, one-party state.

Madigan will get around this by referring tax appeal cases to another trusted law firm who will then take the cases before the Board of Appeals. Madigan will still get his 1/3 of the tax reduction and throw a bone to the law firm representing Madigan and Getzendanner and because they are getting so much new work, they won't screw with the Speaker's law firm.

Madigan makes his money on the repeat business from large real estate owners, especially the industrial and downtown office buildings. Reduce the assessment, they are re-assessed every three years, appeal again, reduce and Joe Berrios starts the process all over again. It is all about cash flow.

I'm glad I moved my business to Indianapolis from Cook County three years ago. Just got fed up with all of the business and property taxes as well as the union bullshit. Relocated to a right to work state and reduced my property taxes from $63,000 per year to $12,300 for an industrial building. Other business taxes were reduced on average 30%. Good riddance to Illinois.

Think the financially sound and highly profitable Amazon is hoping for a hefty tax incentive to build in Illinois?
They certainly don’t need it, but the legal aspects will be a huge benefit for some law firm and that’s what Madiganites are lobbying for.
Somebody (guess) already owns the (secret) proposed vacate building site.
That property will need assessment re-evaluating and rezoning.
Thats just the first Cha-Ching.
Every big real estate deal goes through Madigan first, then the municipality for additional tax cuts and finally the local law firm.

(Madigan does avail his services, albeit steep, to the average joe too.)

It’s no surprise to find that the typical AlderThief such as Moreno, Maldonado, Section8’Arena, et al, to dabble in large scale real estate acquisitions and zoning as well.
Guess who reviews their finance tax’s and real estate appeals.

Sanctuary isn’t just for refugees.

Those of you bashing Rauner, chew on this for a moment. Rauners opponent Jeannie Ives (sic) wants to take away your pension. She wants active duty Officers put in a 401K and retired Officers to reduce what they currently receive. She will accomplish this via a Constitutional Amendment that removes the "shall not diminish" portion of the Illinois Constitution. I'm no big Rauner fan but Ives will have you eating cat food.
