How Crowded?
How crowded is the Academy now?
This crowded:
This crowded:
- They have the new 18-01 class at the academy starting at 1600 and until 0025 all this week. Pretty sure that’s the first time being done.
The Department was having trouble finding enough instructors to work the late shift last we heard. Anyone have the inside scoop?

I’ll work it. I’ll do anything to get out of the shithole I’m in. It would be nice if it was time and a half. Oh well... just 14 years until retirement.
They had 3rd watch classes for PPO's late 80's.
This was done in 1986 when they hired big. Two shifts one on second watch and one on third watch.
The academy now has scattered start and end times for the recruits. Helps cut down on fights after school.
I was in 90-1. Our class was 250 Ppo's so they had 1/2 going on days and 1/2 coming in nights.
Well, we all know the clouted like their M-F 8-4 schedule. They don’t work nights....or do windows!
good drinking hours.
I think 90-1 had evening classes
There were plenty of 3rd Watch classes during the mass hiring after the first Gulf War.
I’m all for it!!!! If that means more po’s on the street. Then bring on the time changes and let them get used to it because the different start/end times will only change more as does their careers.
It's an election year, so the Mayor is finally going to get us up to full strength.
What a joke thousands of victims because of his ignorance and not caring about the public.
Will the new millennials go for this? They're delicate flowers, they need the sun.
The snowflakes “working” at the academy don’t want to do afternoon hours.... it cramps their style.
They did this back in 1986 during the mass hirings from the 1985 tests. That was the year they were forced to have two tests because the first test had some lower age cap and some went to court.
Starting in June, 200 people hit the books each month till the end of the year (more?) And after a few months they had to start the newer classes on the third watch.
Good. Keep hiring. Hire felons if you have to. They all contribute to the pension. Insurance for the maxed out.
Think the non standard hours will discourage the fragile little tykes?
Its not the first time the Academy ran classes into shifts, they did it in the 80's
It is crowded enough that the “home room” for one class is the gym and classes are being taught in the vendateria all day. The staggered start times have been going on for a while but not to thie extent of a whole different watch!
The department is 24/7, so why not?
I’d put them in class during 1st watch hours. This way they can get used to their regular start times immediately. Plenty of parking around the academy then.
It was like this in late 80’s personally this is great more to help fund the pension, which btw Kevin graham has the mayor made that required contribution due,or are you getting lawyers ready for court?
On another note even the democrats news network cnn sees how crazy democrats sticking up for illegal criminals over American citizens is:
On shutdown, Democrats have a lot of explaining to do
http://www.cnn.com/2018/01/21/opinions/government-shutdown-opinion-stewart/index.html
Excerpt:
Democrats were so hell-bent on settling the fate of unlawful immigrants that they were willing to punish lawful residents who serve in our military, rely on children's health insurance and rely on valuable government services.
That says it all democrats throughout the country are doing everything to destroy this country, ruining everything the Democratic Party needs to become extinct so much anti-American and anti-law and order sentiment they spread everywhere.
Even CNN finally sees it what is next?
God bless the USA 🇺🇸 President Trump lets gut the swamp let’s march these obstructionists off to prison, come on AG Jeff Sessions we need a John Wayne moment!
I remember them doing that sometime in the late eighties or early nineties. Finding instructors? How about ordering them to do so?
Those are great hours! You miss rush hour, can find parking, are able to shop for all the uniform stuff you need during the day. And you still can go out for a couple of drinks and sleep in. Sign me up.
Did they run out of lockers?
How my, going to the gym must be horrible.
Please! It's been overcrowded before. Many times worse I'm sure.
Deal with it!
That was going on in 1986 when the big hire was happening.
Don’t worry, the standards at the training academy will not change. This batch of recruits will be just as good as any others. (fart sound)
Why not run the academy 24 7?
Oh yeah, it's a spot and special people don't like to work nights and weekends.
Not even a break in-between to allow parking spots to free up.
In the 90-1 Class there were about 350 officers not including the 100 or so hired in Dec1989. NOw add to the Metro class and CHA Police there were about 700 plus in the Academy. We had 2 start times that flip flopped and we were on a 16 Week tenure. Start times were 0600 and 1000 hrs and hen flip flopped. We started on 26Mar1990 and were in the Districts on 04Jul1990. Those were the days.........
How long until someone's mommy calls Eddie and complains about their precious little one going into "THAT" neighborhood in the dark?
Another rumor, they were suppose to start another detective class in February. The Department realized that the previous three detective classes had a mandated class cut from the curriculum so they could have them hit the streets faster.
Supposedly they have to be certified by the Cook County States Attorney Office in order to know how their office works. Now all of these detectives have to go back to the academy and take this class. No other classes will be made this year until this is done, anyone else hear something similar?
I'm calling my mom!!! They can't do this to us it's not fair!
This has been done before. the problem is not enough FTO's. Any police officers who get in trouble should use as their defense that they did not receive adequate training because they either did not have an FTO or were with an FTO and 1 or 2 other recruits making it impossible to receive adequate training. There are a number of official documents both sponsored by the city and the Feds which relate how important FTO's are.
they should get used to working bad hours. They will be on midnights for 15-20 years unless they have clout.
It's happened before. It's to the end of the world people. We are a 24 hour operation. Getting them ready for their future jacked up work schedules
I heard that the range guys are going to have homerooms too.
Considering that not working day is part of the gig, they should always have classes around the clock. The FAA does this for ATC.
Making room for new Sgt. class?
They need to teach the kids when they are shipped off to 10 and 11 that the guy with a jab of heroin is not a cartel member. And the white folks that drive in from Plainfield, Schamburg, Oak Park, ect... are "tourists" and it is not worth making an arrest.
With classes starting at 1600 hrs and the day shift working until 1600 hrs, parking will be a nightmare. Forget ever visiting the academy for in-service classes, the gym or range. There are options besides the academy for some of the classes but the current leaders are ignorant of the options. Besides the hours, not enough lockers and a shortage of instructors. Everyone assumes that overtime is approved but I doubt it. Without overtime, there are not enough instructors to cover two watches.
Midnight at the Oasis.
Cheef Keef Cab Calloway has enlisted COPA, Lemons & Jam’Al and several RevRuns to bridge the after dinner curriculum on diversity, inclusion, tolerance and the utmost...how to respect the community (selective attendance).
All physical training will be limited to various methods of forming peace circles, door to door community engagement and copier use.
Why? Can't get snowflakes up before noon?

I’m betting a few unless they have the phone call. Then they won’t see third watch. They will cater to a few bet there’s a line out the commanders door saying they can’t do it and they will be excluded. They will cater to the new entitled one right in the academy
FYI... The academy is getting a miserable prick Sargeant from 025, JL, know it all, sloppy, micro- managing ass hat who thinks his job is to work against blue shirts, not with them. He knows everything, just ask him. Enjoy playing God with the kiddies you miserable toad looking jag off.💩
they need room for 30 SGT's also in March.
I thought P/Os got paid duty availability to compensate for being available at all hours.
Keep hiring! Maybe the pension will last a few years longer. A BIG maybe
The department is 24/7, so why not?
^Yes, for us no clout average Joe in patrol. Academy staff work Mon-Fri 7am-3:30pm.
Is Gator going to teach his Urban Tan s pastor class? If so I'm in!!!

working the 6/2 schedule and rotating every 28 days, now THAT was interesting!
back then there was more camaraderie and everyone looked out for each other, more so than today.
just my opinion
Does that mean TWO!! shifts of Safe Passage taxpayers have to pay for?
What SGT's and when. I thought they were going to make detectives?

Why can’t the sgts teach?
Exactly, everyone should be teaching.
Someone remind the recruits they get no health insurance upon retirement.

They are too busy with their exercise routines, two hour lunches or otherwise just standing around gossiping while sipping Starbucks. Teaching is beneath their intelligence.
Gator is going to teach his Urban Translator class. That is going to be a great training module!
30 Sergeants makes 21 off the list. They can’t stretch it to 50 at least? I feel for all those waiting to make it in rank order.

That guy is something. I had a professional work related disagreement and he took it out on me every single day. What a jerk. So now at the academy he will fuck with the recruits and officers.
Rule #1- Never disagree with Sgt J.L. Rule #2- Please see rule number 1.
Hey it good they are hiring. Is it a bad thing the academy is full?

Parking is a nightmare now. Over 700 in the academy now where do they park and during days you have a high school right next to the academy so the students take up the street parking
As far as not having enough instructors, these guys only teach a class or two a day. They don’t teach 6 classes a day. And when there is only one class in the academy what are all the instructors doing?
Not really...

It was also because everybody was in the same boat working a beat car. 1 commanders secretary, no front office , 1 review and citation officer, that was it. Now you have more inside and on “special” teams, robbery, burglary teams. That what the tact team did. If there was a burglary or robbery pattern, they worked it and weren’t out getting nickel bags

When you get misty eyed over the old days don’t leave out Officers that didn’t get picked up on a watch and bounced back and forth between afternoons and midnights, and when your weekends came up they switched your DOG and you never saw a weekend. The camaraderie was better if you rotated with your watch but if the you pissed off the WC you got launched and knew what was in store until you got picked up again by someone else or made amends. Flop didn’t do shit for you either, that’s how it worked.
I heard they don’t have enough chairs for recruits in the class rooms and that they have them all sitting on the floor now. Not to mention no home rooms and lockers for them as well.
Hey, there are 40 vacant public school to use, Englewood be gotten 11 closed ones. Let the flakes learn to shoot in the school yard, no one will notice. Basement Gym and showers coed, via a hose from a fire hydrant. It worked when CPD had the pit on Decovin Street, a old civil war hospital as the academy. Gym was in basement and if you were 6 foot or over, you banged your head and hit the floor.
Or let the flakes start using the land for the new academy on Chicago and Kostner. Put up a big ass circus tent. Learn marksmanship by popping the alley rats.
Oh my god! This will mean the tough guys from the range will have to be there.

I’m sure 99% of the recruits care or even think of something 30 years from now In 30 years there could be national health care
When I came on the city gave us free healthcare, not anymore. Things change yearly and you would get ulcers and die of stree if you worried about things 30 years in the future
And I would think many know about that anyway with all the recent publicity or from their family and friends

I have an idea mr know it all, why don’t you worry about your own discretion and not worry about what the cops in 10, 11, or anywhere else do? If they want to arrest the heroin buyers from the burbs, good - they pay the tow fee. So it is worth making an arrest. They will learn and decide what arrest is worth making in their own time, for their own standards (which may change over time) just like we all did. It’s called experience. That’s how cops mature.
Jesus the rate that some of the “fetal” screamers sweat young guys doing work and learning the job is alarming. Don’t worry pops, you can apply your vast knowledge of who gives you free or discounted meals and where the best hiding spots are, no kid making a little dope pinch here or there will rat you out.
Also I find most liberal, cop hating, and 2nd amendment hating cunts from Oak Park to absolutely be worth arresting! They can tell that over tea at Frank lloyd Wright’s house. Lol. That’s just me though.

Sure let’s just keep allowing letting your nieces and nephews to keep buying dope. It’s not hurting anyone. Until they OD because the dealers are mixing their stuff with who knows what. Will you still say let everyone buy and sell dope? Don’t you have any pride in yourself? I give two shits about the job, but why did you become the police?
jumping in here late but...
How many are actually coming thru the academy?
How many have retired in 2017?
Is the city really trying to bring manpower anywhere near what it needs to be?
And NO dic class until fall. Fact.

It's not our job to fix the lives of those who CHOOSE to buy and use illegal drugs. Arresting them doesn't typically stop them from using drugs anyway. If someone chooses to use drugs, chooses to buy them from some random gang member in the ghetto, and chooses to take the risk of overdose or getting fentanyl or God knows what in their system, that's their own problem. They need to fix that, not us. If you want to stop illegal drug use, go work in a rehab center. Even then you won't make much of a difference, but at least you'll be in the right profession to try. Since you chose to be the police instead, arrest the drug dealers, inventory their drugs and money, impound their cars, and make their lives as difficult as you can. They're the ones hurting the drug users. They're the ones committing the real crime. If you care about drug users as much as you seem to, try to make a difference that way, or why did you become the police?

Hey mr. Career counselor, have you done any dope work in your Police career? How do you think we get to the dealers? Since you don’t know, I’ll tell you - we flip little suburban kids who are terrified at the prospect of the state following through on a pimpy 1 hit heroin arrest. We dangle the prospect of mom’s minivan being impounded. We find out who sold it to them, where, and for how much. We develop CI’s. We work the little fish to get to the big fish.
Oh I’m sorry, did you have a direct line to the higher level suppliers and cartel that you’re not sharing with us? If so, by all means please go ahead and make that big bust.
The big arrests start with little arrests. That’s why you make them.
You might want to reconsider your career counseling side gig. Or just keep using that as your excuse to “stay fetal”.

The city is trying to bring it up to a little over 13,300 by the end of the year. That’s the 1,000 ADDITIONAL officers over around 12,300 budgeted this year
Is that enough, who knows, but it’s whats in the budget

That’s a really great Gung Ho speech. How much of a dent in the drug trade would you say you’ve made with your “little to big fish”? You might want to reconsider your career running around chasing the pack because it’s pointless. Or just keep repeating that speech to yourself as an excuse to make yourself feel important and that you’re making a difference in the world.

But hey, don’t make those little arrests, because they don’t lead to anything. You’d just be giving gung ho speeches and pointlessly chasing the pack and doing making those little arrests so you feel good about yourself. They can’t possibly make a difference, right? LOL
