Slum Times Desperation

Now they're going to start running columns from a dead guy in an effort to boost sagging circulation numbers:
  • Last week, on the 21st anniversary of his death, we republished a vintage column by Mike Royko, the greatest Chicago columnist ever. We probably shouldn’t say that out loud — that Royko was the best — for fear of offending all the fine columnists working today. But they know it. It’s true.

The column we reran from 1980, about the stupidity of our nation’s weak gun laws, seemed incredibly relevant to our own times, which, when you think about it, is depressing. Readers responded enthusiastically, though, leading us to this thought: Let’s bring Mike back.

If the Tribune can run Classic Peanuts, and Coke can sell Classic Coke, we can — and really should — run Classic Royko.
Somehow irony is lost on the "Borrowed" Times. When Royko wasn't writing about the decline of civilization, reminiscing about taverns, the newsroom and softball games, his imaginary barfly friends, 16-inch softball, ribs, and the Cubs, he wrote extensively about political corruption - something the Slum Times (and Tribune) studiously avoid lest they irritate their political masters. And now, the Slum Times is going to ride to its grave re-posting the columns of a man already in his grave two decades.

Bizarrely fitting.

Let’s see them run this one:

If they would have asked the tough questions and not been involved in fake news maybe they wouldn't be where they are.

Which is ironicbeing that Royko left the Sun TImes to work for the Tribune. "No self-respecting fish would want to be wrapped in a Murdoch (Sun Times) paper". Referring to Rupert Murdoch's lust for b.s. rather than news.

What did thirty years of Chicago Gun Control do FOR CHICAGO or its citizens?

Remember when we were complaining about the eight hundred (800!!!) dead two years ago, and people said it could have been worse like it was in the nineties? Chicago Gun Control made it worse.

Maybe they will mess up, and accidentally publish one of his corrupt Chicago Pol columns? All you need to do is update the names!

Oh stop, Royko was a damn leftist. Yes, he observed how corrupt our politicians are in Illinois and he also commented about what a lousy president Reagan was. What's this about weak gun laws? What, we don't have a 2nd amendment right to own firearms? I guess not in these progressives minds. We have that as one of our many rights to keep know it all assholes like Royko, Obama and Jane Byrne from turning us into subjects instead of citizens.

Take one of Mike Royko's old corruption columns, change a few details and SOME of the names, and it will be Pulitzer Prize worthy.

This will not go over well in the 11th Ward. Remember, Royko was a major critic of King Richard the Greater, Richard J. Daley! Royko even wrote a book, that was a classic on Chicago Political Corruption called "Boss" about the elder Daley. And what does it say about the depths to which Chicago Journalism has stooped, that they have to run columns from a guy who has been dead for over 20 years! Baby "G"

For votes...

For pushing a bullshit narrative about guns being bad and so they should be banned...

whatever. I never see a slum times unless it's left behind somewhere, and then I throw it in the trash.

Royko always chomped at the bit of political correctness. It was said that conservatives viewed him as a bleeding heart, and liberals viewed him as a loose cannon. He got into trouble near the end with a column that was humorously critical of Hispanics. He was growing more politically incorrect, and you got the sense the Tribune heaved a sigh of relief when he suddenly died in Florida.

As much as I miss Royko's biting columns, especially when he railed against corruption and/or fought for the little guy, he had it all wrong when it comes to the 2A. I did like his book titled "Boss", which was all about old man Daley and company. To trot out an old column condemning guns and private gun ownership is stupid and shortsighted. The elite, the rich, the well connected have always had access to firearms or armed guards. (Chicago Aldermen for example)
Those who deny the rights guaranteed under the Second Amendment do not have your best interests in mind. Citizen, protect thyself with all means available.

I had a few occasions to drink with Mike Royko present at the old Stop 'n Drink next to the old 18th District station. When intoxicated he could be very nasty and very anti-2nd Amendment. RIP Mike.

When I taught State and Local Politics at Northern Illinois University, I always included Royko's Boss in the reading list. You cannot understand urban politics unless you understand ethnic politics, and Royko was the master of discussing this subject.

He also took some decent and well deserved swings at Daley Senior. Most media hacks today lack his courage and writing ability.

Look at a free copy you find, the advertising is getting so much "ghettolicious" small no name companies that attract nothing! They will be gone soon, and to think a former rich Chicago alderman raised in privilege Ed Eisendrath, took investors for a ride and now they will lose everything! Hey just like the north shore rich boy mayor we have, privileged, agitator, wealthy, conniver the similarity are endless! Wonder does Eisendrath have a hidden wedding dress, or most likely a parachute so he can jump from a top floor and escape when the investors come for his head! Wait a dam minute if the citizens in chiraq cared they would be at city hall with torches lit rushing in and dragging the man out along with his cohorts responsible for all the murder, maiming, and mayhem in chiraq!

All that matters now is protecting blue lives, and the families of our blue brothers and sisters everyone else loks like your on your own! everyone else get this immediately and practice the life you save may be your own or your children's:
Concealed Carry License

Chicago has become totally lawless, and you can thank the elected democrats for doing this, but you will continue to vote for them and give them your hard earned cash for their back pockets and campaigns lemmings!

SCC it's obvious. The Scum-Times has entered the 'death tunnel', and the welcoming hand of Mike Royko has manifested itself. Many of the surviving 018's have memories of a drunk, mumbling, and piss-panted Royko at Clark St.'s infamous 'Stop and Drink' bar. Another fine example of Chicago's journalistic community. Before I forget, a big "FUCK YOU" shout out to the soon to be defeated rahm. God bless the police everywhere. TY SCC.

I wouldn't give them a dime to read their anti-American, cop hating, leftist liberal garbage. They can all go throw themselves on a trash heap for all of the damage their snowflake agenda has done to Chicago.

Don't link me up with the Chicago Tribune either, I'm not paying to see their online or newsstand edition for the same reason.
