So....FOP and PBPA. What is the declared "emergency" that would entitle the Department to actually cancel all days off over a weekend? Because we're pretty sure "morons lacking any sort of self-control and that might endanger Rahm's reelections chances" doesn't really fall under the accepted definition of an emergency.

A LONG time ago, a City I was in wanted the ability to do something when an "emergency" situation arose. A very wise gentleman told them to shove it up their assess until it came out their ears because "emergency" was so vaguely defined.
Government can and will always stretch the boundaries of what We, The People, have allowed them to do. If "emergency" is defined in the contract and this doesn't meet the criteria - ignore the bullshit order. If it's vaguely defined, well then, you've got yet another thing to negotiate...

Sucks to have the initiative order, but if there has to be one, appears this is within the contract and the fairest way with seniority. Does this include everyone or just the beat officers?

That’s the whole point. If crime is down why would they need to bother canceling RDO’s at all? Let the exempt patrol the mag mile while the rank and file get some much needed R&R. Unless they’re too scared to actually be the police.

Yeah, I remember the same shit last year. If you didn't volunteer then guess what- they cancelled your RDO anyway. They needed 9 people for our watch and there is only 7 people in my day off group so seniority didn't even matter. When July 4th came around they cancelled RDO for the whole fucking week, not just the holiday. The whole "volunteer" bs is just for appearances. They purposely set that high number of volunteers because they know they don't have that many people, so of course everyone gets their days cancelled.

And where exactly are all the volunteers coming from? Many districts don’t have that type of manpower to hit the number they want. Some may only have 10 people RDO. Unless there’s some type of manpower emergency like mass riot, NATO, maybe even the Cubs WS(debateable) there’s no reason to force people to work RDO. A simple holiday weekend does not qualify.
And where are these volunteers coming from....9 for 1st watch we hardly have 9 in any day off group so guess what it's a cancelled rdo.

phlegm, you are an idiot. The victim was a law enforcement official willing to assist the investigators and other law enforcement officials were witnesses willing to talk to the investigators. Also, their was a chance the offender could be apprehended and there was a chance of further firearms usage by the offender. The response given was in an effort to make sure no residents or other law enforcement officials were injured or killed.
Had the victim been a resident of the neighborhood, they would refuse to talk to the police and any other residents would refuse to talk to the police. So what good would a big response do for the people you represent? None.
