Slum Times had an article this weekend about the apology the mall had to give for asking some teenagers to leave a while ago. Probably related to the Starbucks Effect. Just from memory, there have been at least two major disturbances at that mall in the past 3 months. One was a firearm discharge. Nice.
Between Amazon eating into mall profits and the antics of out of control teens at these malls, that mall is going to be a hotel or condo building with 10 years.
Yet, the mall owner, GGP apologized the other day to a couple of those misguided youts because their security removed them "without cause."
1) I was unaware that a mall was a public space and anyone was permitted to go and do whatever they wanted. It is a private owned property. Thank God that GGP was sold, perhaps the new owners will take a hard line on who they permit on their properties.

What is really angers me this is sort of behavior is what is reported in The UK. I have friends in the UK and they are afraid to come to the States because they think the entire country is a war zone. What about the schools they ask. I tell them we have had armed police that are permanently stationed at the Jr High and High Schools, they have police stations in these schools and have for decades, and the lower grades have panic buttons that will bring in armed to the teeth law enforcement in minutes, many grade schools are co-located with upper grade schools. In Wyoming Schools are not gun free zones. It sharpens the mind of a crook when they know they have a even chance of having new "A" hole punched with a 124gr 9mm hollow point.
Maybe those living high up in residences on Michigan Ave can take a page from rooftop-haven Wrigleyville: start charging to watch the mayhem below. I was detailed to Loop Traffic many years ago, we had a ton of guys. I made more friends there. We were the extra guy there for the holidays. We were told the unit was funded in part by the extra taxes the merchants paid for the manpower, some sort of taxing district. I wonder where all that money went when they disbanded the unit?
We were in addition to the regular corner man. Took care of the loop all the way to Van Buren and all the way to the North End of 018.
I see a lot of bitching in the comments but no solutions. Here’s an idea:
It seems a large majority of people committing crimes in the northside neighborhoods aren’t from the northside. They’re from south side and ride up on the CTA red line (nothing to do & nothing worth stealing where they live. If they try to rob a brother they will get beat/shot/retaliated against later, better to rob whitey who will hand over their wallet/purse/phone and do nothing - outside of filing a police report).

Mine is a heavier piece of rubber but is shaped like a night stick and is dark in color like a night stick. You cannot tell it is not made of wood until you look very close at it.

Enough said? No, I don’t think so - let me add to this. I lived down there for 20 years and worked in construction helping to build a lot of those so called luxury buildings. On the surface the area looks nice, but I moved out of there because I got tired of dealing with the honor students and their rites of passage.
You ask why are those buildings being built? Simple answer - banks are in the business of lending money. That’s what they do. A developer goes to a bank with a convincing enough marketing plan and the gatekeeper of funds, who earns a nice commission on the the loan, lends the money. That sh*t continued to happen at the height of the market that brought us the crash 10 years ago. Had nothing to do with real demand, it’s just smoke and mirrors. Same thing is happening now, except the area has gotten a lot worse from a safety standpoint. The buildings will go up, but they’re not going to sell out or get rented as quickly as you think until there are price adjustments - then demand will pick up, the units will get filled with tenants and the honor students will have more suckers to attack.
It’s not safe, please stop spreading bs.

The big money people would not be financing and building these things if they did not believe they would get some kind of profit out of it. One of the things that killed Detroit was when the people with the money lost faith. That would include the car companies who realized Detroit was not going the right way and slowly pulled out.
When you see the big real estate developers pulling back, that is the time to start really worrying.
