- Dog days are coming to the jail. For the first time in the history of Cook County, a selected group of dogs from the city’s crowded Animal Care and Control shelter (aka “The pound”) will soon have a new temporary home: Cook County Jail.
The dogs will also have a new roommate: a jail inmate.
Sneed has exclusively learned a new program devised by Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart will permit trainable dogs, ostensibly large ones that are difficult to adopt, to live with some of the jail’s most dangerous inmates housed in the maximum-security section known as Division 9.
“No murderers or rapists permitted and a protection system will be in place,” said Dart, who describes the program he calls “Tails of Redemption” to be a “win-win.”
No murderers or rapists? We guess Dart does have half a brain at least. And the dogs - going from one jail to another? Their own personal version of Hell it seems.

Tom Dart is certifiably mentally ill. One of his top aides says he on psychotropic medication. It's scary someone like him could hold any kind of power position. There have been over 40 inmates who have died in his custody in last two years. The feds should seriously remove him in a straight jacket.

And if rapists and murderers cannot have one, then who the hell does get one? Everyone else is out on electronic monitoring.
Remember the Sheriff was considered a mayoral candidate and now everyone laughs at him. Does the joke of the town really think this crazy stuff is going to help him.

For the first time in my life I don't know what to say..this is probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I officially nominate Sheriff Dart to Ig Nobel prize. This is given to the dumbest scientific achievement. He probably believes there is some science behind it.
I would laugh hard but there is animal cruelty involved in it so I won't.
And I have doubts about these "murderers and rapists". Ahem..especially rapists.

This is no way to treat a dog. Dart really has his head up his ass with this idea. Forcing a dog to live with the animals he has on hand is abuse of man's best friend.
Seems like a harsh sentence for a dog that has not been accused let alone convicted of a crime. Solitary confinement for real. Where is the Northwestern Innocence Project to advocate social justice and civil rights reforms for those unjustly incarcerated for crimes which they did not commit. Talk about harsh sentencing. The taxpayers once again will be on the hook for big court ordered payouts for false imprisonment.
Im concerned the four legged dogs will get fleas and other parasites from the actual inmates.

I feel so bad for these dogs. It's inhumane. These asshole criminals are IN JAIL. They aren't supposed to be pandered to anyway. What's next? Massages from massage school students? Mani/pedi's from cosmetology school students? Meals served by chefs in training? Is jail just a "safe space" for these asshole criminals??

Don't laugh. A maximum security prison in Kentucky has been doing this with long term (25+ years) sentenced offenders for many years with success. It seems to keep the inmate violence down some and the dogs are eventually adopted by families.
I feel sorry for those poor dogs from the dog pound to be forced to live with the same thugs that use them for bait in their Pit Bull fighting games, and or train them to be fighting dogs.
The dogs will come away with fleas.
The jail is now a condo association. Great amenities. Work out facility, pizza deliveries to units(cells), social media access, round the clock cable tv, and now you can bring your dog to jail, I mean to your stay at the Little Tommy Darts condos.

The Chicago dog pound has 85% pit bull breeds. The article states its the large hard to handle dogs going to the jail. So pit bull breeds are going to be taken care of by violent inmates and the taxpayer has to foo the bill if someone gets hurt. I seriously believe this Sheriff has to have mental issues. Is there anyone who can tell him this is probably not a good idea.

Its amazing how many inmates have died in Sheriff's custody recently. Black lives really don't matter when the media covers for their golden boy Tom Dart. If Sheriff Joe Arpio had dozens on inmate deaths the media would be demanding his arrest. Also, its almost as if SNEED is mocking dart in the article but he seems to naïve to realize it.

My rescue dog that I rescued from a program in Indiana called "Prison Tails" is nervous 100% of the day. She was still a pup when we got her but after 10 years she still shows teeth any time a male enters our house. I've never laid a hand to her but she still comes to me when I call her, with her tail between legs. The animals that Dart deserves to be roommates with will make more just like mine. Hopefully they bite the shit out of the animals locked up.

How much do want to bet the Kentucky don't laugh comment was written by Dart or Cara Smith. Division 9 is a little different then some southern jail who probably houses drunks and j walkers. But nice try Cara.

No, not one of them will tell him he has a bad idea. They just want to keep their jobs. They don't care, their laughing at him too.
I am the last guy to praise that goofy Sheriff, but if it saves some dogs from the needle, and teaches some of the mopes to care about something other than themselves, I hope its a success. They have the time, lets see what happens.
Dart is the biggest phony pos that ever walked. When he had a hissy fit in 2009 over his k9 unit suing him for unpaid overtime. Dart locked the dogs in small crates on the jail grounds 23 hrs a day. Some of dogs were put down. That ckk sckkrr is no animal lover.
Dogs for inmates could be promising for man's best friend with one proviso. Illinois must enact a law making bestiality a Class X felony.

There program has actually been successful in other states. So maybe it would work here. Not optimistic but waiting to see.
Had grilled dog in Viet Nam. I guess if they have enough lighters, the inmates can have that novel experience for themselves.
