Corruption at the Airport?

  • Chicago firefighters assigned to O’Hare and Midway Airports will be re-trained under a new commander, thanks to an ongoing federal investigation into allegations that “unqualified personnel” were staffing specialty rigs assigned to air rescue.

“The FAA made an inquiry about certain circumstances related to training and certification. As we looked at it in response to the FAA inquiry, we resolved that there were some issues there,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot told reporters at City Hall.

“As a consequence, the individual who was in charge of that training was replaced by someone else.”
Lori, it's going to take years (and not a little amount of balls) to actually clean up the stink at the airports. Burke has treated these city assets as his own personal playground, assigning people there for years based solely on phone calls. And now the feds want an accounting - literally and figuratively - of how money is being spent.

You ought to cooperate and just give them Burke to waterboard.

** I agree, however it's like that throughout the whole city...and including HQ! Right after probation many get comfy spots where they never worked the street yet they are called the police? Why waste time going through the academy for a fucking desk spot? Or to just sit on their ass at the airport? makes no sense.

Let’s not just say the clout people are at the airports, they are everywhere if you’re connected you have a person a call you can get work wherever you wanna go you can do whatever you want any kind of infraction or crime and you get away with it simple as that it’s been going on since the inception of the police department and the fire department so what is new here. What happens to the boss nothing just gets moved around just like our boss for example the one that used Chicago police personnel for babysitting and being personal chauffeurs for his children. What about the so-called commander that thought he was dale Earnhardt going over 130 or so miles an hour refusing to stop for the Indiana State police nothing happened to him he got another new car he got moved he keeps his pension his job everything nothing happens but if it’s a hard-working blue shirt police officer that does anything wrong they will get hammered fired put in prison whatever.

“If we have to have a chief that’s specifically trained to operate our airports, then we need to put that chief in that position.”

Imagine if this ideology was applied in the CPD? In say something like the detective division? There may actually be a better clearance rate. Or better trained detectives. Not the lazy and incompetent crybabies that are spreading through the Bureau of Detectives.

Nah. It’s more important to play god and assign people because clout and phone calls rule this department.

The dumping of bosses can’t come soon enough. Not that it will change anything, but change of arrogant assholes is always a good thing.

IF I remember correctly...
I recall reading a story that a group of F/1's that applied for the CFD a long while back were disqualified as they could not pass the basic physical agility entrance exam.
They later sued, and the City bargained to give this large (no pun intended) group the option of a $$$ payout, or put them on the CFD with back pay AND seniority. Those that took the job, WITH BACK-FILLED SENIORITY, immediately bid to the airport(s) as they now had the time that qualified them to bid there right away even though their seniority was based on their time off between being cut from the CFD and the lawsuit.
Some were 50+ yoa, still unfit but they were able to successfully outbid those qualified, in shape but with less time (seniority) IN SERVICE.
Can't find original story. IF located, please post
Thanks

Interesting thought. At the AA 191 40th anniversary memorial May 25th there were two CFR rigs to do a water cannon salute at the conclusion of the event. The officer in charge gave the order to start and it took several minutes to get the water flowing. Not sure if that was inherent with how the nozzles operate but it appeared the officer was getting a bit upset and barking orders into his radio. Just an observation 😱

It’s a driving on the airfield issue turned whistleblower.
Do CFD drivers get a higher pay scale than ordinary FF’s ?
Did the Chief get dumped for letting a low seniority untrained member get a pay bump for a driver job?
As I recall there’s a written airfield driver test that issues a stripe on the ID badge for airfield access.

Years ago CPD had a house rule the “most senior” Desk jockey was paid D-3 (by Contract) to fill in for a Desk Sgt.(what you kids now call a DSS. I’ll still call ‘m desk sergeants). Well, a grievance was lodged and the pay bump was actually limited to only “senior BID” Desk jocks, not the senior officer that’s silly-nilly assigned to the desk for the day, week etc.
Wonder if this CFD thing is the same sort or just flagrant Merit Boss phone call favoritism.

Chief (or someone below) dumped for letting someone drive (unauthorized) on the airfield is that subject to and punishable by FAA fine?
I don’t think anyone gets dumped from the airport just for that sole reason, there’s a more obvious message.
Guess that’s the penalty for driving a Hulk of an apparatus.

Now that the idiot misfit angry toad just dipped her webbed toes into the wide, wide world of municipal airport operations it means fundamentally transformation via 21st Century Reforms is a comin’ (reckoning) to ORD-MDW and it’s just getting warmed up.

Your comment misses a very important fact. The firefighters assigned to the airports make premium pay and lots of OT at that premium rate because they must have special training and certification to man the equipment at the airport, special equipment. There comes the clout; you get and keep the assignment, make the big bucks and never get the certification. I don't know if Burke has had anything to do with this, but it is clout pure and simple. My question is where has the firefighters union been all along. They were supposed to protect their members from these type of things.

Better yet, look at Captain overtime. Most commanders do the bare minimum because they don't make OT, so they have their Captain do everything. There is a captain in the South side (the one who's wife shot him and then he led about it) that is making more money than a chief, all because his Commander works about 30 hours a week. FOIA that shit, it's all there.

Nick Sposato lobbied Illinois Legislature to get his
Aldercreature time rolled into his Fire time because
the Fire time is more valuable. At the time, he was
the only one. Now I hear one more Creatute will
qualify under this law.
When I interviewed for a Fed. Govt. job they asked
me if I had military service or worked as a mailman.
(I think they could tell "no" on both counts). Then,
they inform me that previous Govt. service would
count towards seniority.
This is called stacking. Only problem is, not everybody
gets it, and like everything else, there are abuses. At
one time there were no company pensions or 401(k)'s.
I wish I could get credit for every place I worked, but it
don't work like that in the real world. This is why you
have a pension crisis. You got double dippers and you
got roll overs.

Clout does not get you the airport. The airport sucks. You ask any guy who works in the city limits that has to take a detail there for a shift and they aren’t happy. The guys who drive the crash rigs are engineers. It’s a tested position. They aren’t getting extra pay for their FAA training. There’s constant openings out there because no one wants to work there which gives those guys assigned the opportunity for overtime. You’ll find that same overtime downtown. Any training given there is required by the FAA to work there. There aren’t pay bumps for any of that training. CFD is opposite of CPD in regards to working the ghettos. If you’re not a stud in the academy, you end up downtown, ohare, or another slower spot. Takes years to bid to get a busy spot.
