CCL Kills, is Killed
- A concealed-carry permit holder and a man attempting to rob a business were each killed in a shootout Saturday night in Roseland on the Far South Side, according to police.
About 7:15 p.m., Derrick Gholston, 43, was standing outside of a business in the first block of East 112th Place when he was approached in the by two men who flashed a handgun and demanded his property, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
The man complied and the two robbers then entered the business and announced another robbery, authorities said.
Gholston, who was a concealed-carry permit holder, pulled out his own gun and confronted the robbers, leading to an exchange of gunfire, authorities said.
Unfortunately, while he managed to kill one of the robbers, he lost his own life. Most likely, if he had simply fled after surrendering his wallet, he would have been better off, but he did society a favor by ridding the streets of one scumbag.

Having a CCL does not make you the police. Going in to confront the crooks was sadly, a very stupid move. His life was no longer in danger once they went inside. But at least he put one of the roaches underground.
CCL are still in the lead... the one asshole will rob again thank to cook county justice
God bless. Tough outcome. Hardcore.
Scumbag or not it’s not worth getting involved and trying to have a gun battle with someone over money or a phone. Even as the police, if someone sticks a gun in my face and says to give up a phone then here you go.. way too many wanna be hero’s out here who think they are the punisher or something. When I’m off duty I’m off duty. I don’t want to be a victim
But for property then so be it. If it’s a scenario where my life will be taken then the guns Cana come out but if it’s a robbery and flee then I’m
Not risking anything. If you disagree then you either don’t have a family or you think that you are untouchable because you practice at the range and watch YouTube channels of tactical shooting videos all day. Real life is much different.
God Bless him
citizens rising up...for the right cause....justice. what happened to justice???? He may be one of the first vigilantes to turn this city/country around. what was his name?.
Not Derrick's first shootout.
Feb , 1999
Bond was set by the Will County Circuit Court at $1 million Thursday for a 27-year-old man arrested for allegedly committing the first murder in Joliet this year.
Christopher McDonald of the 500 block of West Bellarmine Drive in Joliet was arrested and taken to the Will County Jail on Wednesday night by Joliet police. He was charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting early Tuesday of John E. Gholston, 26, of the 1600 block of Golden Tree Lane in unincorporated Joliet.
McDonald also was charged with two counts of aggravated battery for allegedly critically injuring two of Gholston's companions, including a 23-year-old cousin, Derrick Gholston of Gerard Avenue in unincorporated Joliet, and Lucias Byes, 25, of the 100 block of Luana Road in unincorporated Joliet.
R.I.P. warrior.
Derrick Gholston, RIP, also KUDOS!! We need more people like you out there who get involved and try to uphold the LAW in this city!!! As for the offender...FU, you got what you deserved.
Mr. Gholston is a true hero. He lost his own life but saved many others from being victimized by these two offenders.
Best not to risk it. But if you ARE going to, you should address the deadly threat for what it is and use cover and advantage. Walking in and shouting "drop it!" is a lot less tactically sound than getting behind some good cover and surprising the bad guys with accurate gunfire. But again- two armed shitbags? Pretty easy to end up getting taken out in that scenario.
Sorry to hear it was your time Mr Gholston,
but thank you for taking one of the scumbags with you.
regards,
Lake County citizen
Very brave man to do that. Humanity does still exist. RIP Mr. Gholston, you died defending your fellow man and you died a hero.

Well said.
A hero died doing what heroes do. He didn't have to anything but chose to put his life on the line for the rest of us. Did he chose wrong ??? I doubt God will think so. RIP.
Just a working guy,and when those sh##t bags took his stuff,he wasn't having it.good intentions,poor tactics.I carry a 10mm,lessons the chance of return fire.
Not a fair exchange. His life was worth more than the useless robber's.
Derrick is going to that big Neon Jukebox in the sky.
The robber will join his fellow roaches watching B&W
silent films. 3 square meals of RoundUp a day.
Scumbag got dropped like by Willie Mosconi
The roach is down with that shit

In regards to the deplorable predator as Hillary Clinton would give her condolences to the robber who was dispatched like a rabid skunk—- “Adios pendejo”
What would Beto do?
I mourn the untimely death of the CCL holder. His service and sacrifice are Honorable. Hopefully the other offender will catch a fatal MRSA infection complicated by lead poisoning.
Looks like he went back inside? Risky move. Be better to have a 'talk' with them on the way out.
Yeah, careful when someone “gets the drop on you.” Also, careful going “ Dirty Harry” with the wife and children with you. Defend your family and yourself. But , be tactically correct unless you are forced into a higher risk.life isn’t a Clint Eastwood movie.
I hope the other offender the one still breathing gets charged with felony murder. I highly doubt it in Cook County but he should.
May you RIP.
Sometimes...
Somebody.
Has to do.
Something...
Yes... He COULD'VE left and the gun toting lovers of death
would've had their way with everyone in that shop.
Whither thus?
What if?
Who knows?
Who cares?
Vividly illustrative point as to why
post use of arms incidents truly do
need cool-headed, common sense, law based,
trained and experienced expert, rational man
review...
Not the social justice, all-up-in-their-feels,
revenge-against-society insanity that's been
loudly manifesting itself since ca. 2008...
ESPECIALLY in incidents involving The Police.
What the liberals, progressives, SJWs
and the ignorant clueless tits from the
aclu and local media just can't get their
heads around is how violent, messy and
unpredictable these situations are/can be
but they want to have air and opportunity to
safely opine with perfect 20/20 hindsight from
the lofty seat of condemnation and scorn.
In such matters pertaining to Policing
and The Police?
Drive liberals, progressives, SJWs, aclu types,
community members and resident trolls into
tongue chewing paroxysms of vexation by insisting
that the only ones fit and suited to judge a
Policeman's use of lethal force are only those
who have had to use lethal force themselves.
Those who've had to shoot and/or kill
should only be judged by those who've
had to shoot and or kill...
Heh...
A deliberately narrow window through which
"Revenge Against The Police and Society"
and it's "hurt feels" will no longer be
able to fit.
If "revenge" and "hurt feels" can no longer
force their way in, the rule of law and
"the reasonable man" will be able to re-assert
their rightful place and standing while the
leftist agendists and their fellow travelers
are left on the back porch huddled under a
40w bulb in a blizzard.
God Bless Mr. Gholston who for whatever motivation,
decided right then and right there to take a stand.
However imperfectly, whether adjudged
right or wrong with the benefit of 20/20
hindsight.
None of us were there.
How can any of us judge?
Meh...
Maybe it's that we're all fucked-up from half a lifetime
of seeing the outrages of Dude Inc. up close and personal
from behind the wheel of a CPD Blue & White.
"Why are you old Cops so hate-crazed, too quick with your
fists/sticks/guns and so mean, hostile and unfriendly?"
Heh... Why indeed?
Police Like You Have No Friends.
Look.
Point & Laugh.
Leave.
He shouldn't have confronted them, he should have just shot them, then taken his stuff back.
Hmmm at the point the gun is in your face that is threatening your life ???!!! Isn’t it ...do you know if you give him the phone he won’t shoot ?

He did society a solid. It’s just a shame he was killed while doing so.
I agree completely with Anonymous 12:49 AM. Better to live to fight another day. Property can be replaced and, usually, it's insured.
Stay safe, everyone.
Where's Mammas public outcry saying "she wants answers"?? With her Lawyer sitting next to her?
RE: Armed thief, deceased
Soon to be posted: Opening @Chicago Kool Aid Factory
So the surviving offender should be charged with two murders when he’s caught.
Or would that be extreme?
So...
2 Darwin Awards for this one.
I respect dude 1 for running towards trouble...but damn....shoot from cover!

Hero? I’d rather be alive than remembered on a tee shirt or blog post for being a “hero”. He’s not a hero, he is dead. I apologize if that’s cold.. I know it is. But it’s reality and a lot of people on this post need a reality check. You want a phone then take it. It’s not worth getting involved for an award or when you die someone can call you a “hero”. Here’s my property. Hands up and they will leave. Being the police long enough I can tell you that 99.9 percent of the time the bad guy will take the easy robbery and take off. The intent is to not shoot you.. but if you try to up a pistol on a guy who already has a gun in your face then I can tell you 99.9 percent of the time that the bad guy will shoot you. Stay alive.. don’t be a “hero” when you are dead. Your family would rather have someone that’s alive than a hero. Just like my wife ALWAYS requests.. don’t you dare run into a burning building or get yourself in a situation for anyone in this city to be a hero and get yourself killed... the kids want a dad and we don’t want a hero who may die. I intend on fully following that request because non of this garbage job is worth dying for don’t forget that.

12:49, my thoughts exactly.
Definitely a righteous hero, taking out the scumbag and saving potentially many lives down the road. Many murders are never solved. Sad this brave man died during this selfless act.
RIP Sir!
Even back in the day, if Ricky Ricardo ever saw this shit,
he would be on a DC-10 headed to Cuba

Simply put, you are a coward ! "Your place will be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nr defeat"
Victims make choices. This time a heavy price was paid by the victim and his family. The citizens are so dam mad at the lawlessness and violence they feel they must fight back. Many have CCL but are unprepared and off balance when Dude, Inc targets them. There will be more such incidents as people arm themselves for survival due to the inept, corrupt and feeble minded leaders administering the Criminal Justice System in the city and Cook County.
"...don't be a hero..."
With your attitude in the 1940s, today half of our country would be speaking Japanese and the other half German.
Just goes to show that having a gun is not the end all be all.... At least he went down fightin..
If cause of Death is completely obvious, Why do the Taxpayers of Crook County have to pay for Autopsies ?
