- Sneed has learned former Illinois State Police Chief Leo Schmitz, former commander of the Englewood Police 7th District, has just been hired as the new chief of public safety for Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.
Word has been circulating in the police chat rooms Schmitz might have been under consideration for Chicago’s top job.
This might prove entertaining.

I hear from a good source the Commanders who were layed off by dart now have a slam dunk case. Dart hired a bunch of new politicos this year after launching the commanders for "budget cut reasons" after they formed a union. Source says the backpay alone will be in the millions. Just like the merit board mess Tommy sticks in to the taxpayer again.
Lets see how long Leo lasts working with sheriff goofy. Ask Cara Smith brothers what she really thought of Sheriff goofy now that she's gone. Not to mention Dana Wright and all of goofy's other top aides who have abruptly resigned in last few months. Ask them how Sheriff goofy even made staff pay for his lunch everyday for the last several years. Good luck Leo, and remember to bring lunch money for Sheriff goofy and remind him to take his meds.

How old is this guy? Just retire and go away enjoy what time you have left. This is the type of guy that once he does finally throw in the towel, will die within 6 months. Maybe he knows that and keeps working to stay alive. The average life span of a CPD officer who stays till the age of 63 is roughly 18 months, 18 months for a life time of work.

Leo Schmitz is a proven leader and was born to be the police. His parents must have known that he would one day be the police that’s why they named him Leo. “L” aw. “E”nforcement. “O” fficer.

If the general public only knew that 95% of the “awards” on his uniform mean absolutely nothing. Most are the equivalent of participation awards (AKA “everyone gets a trophy” ) and the ones that represent something exemplary are the result of creative writing, being in the right place at the right time or paper jumping as the “on scene supervisor” after the fact.
Seriously, these awards are so watered down they mean next to nothing in 9 out of 10 cases. Like everything else there are obvious exceptions, but it’s almost always the same clowns that seem to accumulate these useless awards: unit suckasses and the clout heavy special people. Remember… these awards need to be okayed by the Brassholes - the non-connected, peon blue shirts don’t get the special treatment the chosen few do.
FYI, Leo was a merit lieutenant. Amazing how smart all those merit picks are!

It’s a opportunity for Leo to help move the Sheriffs Police in a positive direction. The Sheriffs Police do not have a open police recruitment, they are limited to current corrections or court services. That really limits the Cook County Sheriffs Department from who they hire for the Sheriffs Police. In most cases you have political hacks, slugs, or employees who have already been tainted by the Cook County system. If recruiting for the Sheriffs Police was like it once was, in the 70s, maybe early 80s, the pool of candidates would be deeper. You would also have the ability to mold them as Police Officers, instead of just moving Cook County employees around. Add that factor to the new initiative for Sheriffs Police, the creation of a District Chicago. Who better to assist in implementing that initiative then former Cmdr/Chief of the CPD 7th District?
I actually think that if all of this is accurate information, then Dart and Schmitz are taking a positive step in the right direction. I think that most of the Cook County Sheriffs Police Officers are happy to have Leo’s leadership. I also believe Dart May move on at some point, can Leo be using this for a stepping stone for a future office if Dart decides to move on?
