Inflating Numbers

  • Like an unusually early spring robin, the headlines have appeared every January for most of the past decade:

“Chicago sets new tourism record with nearly 58 million visitors in 2018.”

“Record-breaking number of tourists visit Chicago in 2017.”

“Chicago welcomed a record number of tourists in 2016.”

According to figures from Choose Chicago, the city’s convention and tourism office, the number of visitors — including business and pleasure travelers — has been rising steadily since the 2010 post-recession low.

“We didn’t just ride the national wave; we’re ahead of it,” outgoing Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in January when the latest figures were released. “No city has seen that kind of exponential growth, from 39 million to more than 57 million.”

OK, so tourism in Chicago is on the rise. But is it really increasing faster than everywhere else? Probably not.

Our readers pointed out (and we agreed) that Rahm was lying through his teeth about the numbers, probably trying to include day trippers and people staying at BnB's or relatives homes and he was most certainly downplaying the impact shootings and downtown wildings had during his second term.

Petty cities with even pimpier states. There’s definitely a draw in this god forsaken city of ours...just out of convenience!!! Their culture is stale their attractions are minimal. Their tourists come HERE to get away from their monotony.

Yeah-after the 4th Of July Navy Pier ‘fireworks’ stampede, tourists are flocking to Chicago like crazy. Tourists really look forward to the downtown area populated by packs of roaming ‘teens’ ready to steal their cellphones or Michigan Avenue purchases, block their movements on the sidewalks ( or just bump into them), start fights, shoplift, walk around with their pants falling off them, etc. After tourists leave this great city, they immediately tell every one of their neighbors, coworkers and relatives to never set foot in this dangerous city...

LA 36.05
Chicago 24.54

People can go elsewhere, score the pot, take in a Broadway

outlets are telling listeners that there is a "mass shooting" in
Chicago every weekend, but it doesn't make the National news

These Democratic mayors are literally letting their cities going

So when you talk about Casinos, Tourism, ect. always remember
that shooting at a marked car is no longer a big deal here and

They count everyone who buys a air-land-sea ticket that arrives at one of the many hubs here in town.
Everybody means it includes business travelers, students abroad, protesters, the bereaved, all military, pandering politicians and of course refugees.
Also includes transfers and stop overs at the airports, rail and mega bus to outlying regional terminals.

It’s not like 50 million people rolled up the downtown tourism office for a pamphlet on major Sanctuary sites.
If that many folks are pouring into Sanctuary Shithole Chicago, imagine the incentives they could offer to just 1% of them to stay.
They do offer voter registrations at the Tourism bureau?

What’s their annual budget? Who’s running the show over there and asking for more City money?

Anything that Rahm said was a lie or at best a half truth in order to put a "best spin" on it. He always talks about transparency. We hear the word "transparency" every day. Its a bullshit word constantly used by the Left. Everything stays the same just dressed up and used as a talking point.

Any numbers put out by Rahm are suspect. The City manipulates the numbers from crime stats to visitors coming to the city. If so may visitors coming in we shouldn't be carrying such a heavy debt.

Lori, as a "reformer", loves transparency just as much as the Midget. Great bullshit talking point for her too. Trouble is most of the residents in Chicago, including some members of the Community, see through Lori and her new line of social justice crap. She's been in office 100+ days and her game is already exposed by the own mouth and deeds. If a Socialist Democratic is talking, they are lying. The only one believing the visitor stats is the Media. Lying by City hall and the Media is beneficial for them not for us.

We cannot afford the excessive police overtime but then the mayor says this very confusing;
The men and women of the Chicago Police Department have worked their butts off over the course of the summer. Every single day, seven days a week, particularly some of the senior leaders have had not a day of rest,” Lightfoot said. “They are pressing hard. Nobody’s taking their foot off the gas.”

57 million tourists, if they all spent ONE night in a hotel per year, would be over 78000 room nights, every night of the year, if 2/room. Admittedly not all stay overnight, some sleep at grandmas in Oak Lawn, etc, but thats 156 thousand tourists walking around EVERY DAY.
Siri says the city of Chicago is 234 square miles. Spread the tourists out and thats 667 gawkers per every square mile, every day. Divide the citys' population of 2705994 by those 156000 daily tourists and 17% of the population walking around is a tourist.

7:52 - I showcase all the shootings and crime on FB to let everyone know what a shithole management has turned it into.

That’s what you spend your time doing? You live in the NW burbs and have nothing better to do than sit and comment here and complain about a city you don’t live in and never visit??

This is like the end of the war where the loser still believes he has bodies to save the day. No one is coming.

Not trying to be an asshole here, but think about it. What is worth a visit besides Chicago in the upper Midwest?? Milwaukee? St. Louis? Cleveland??? Detroit or Indianapolis??? Petty cities with even pimpier states. There’s definitely a draw in this god forsaken city of ours...just out of convenience!!! Their culture is stale their attractions are minimal. Their tourists come HERE to get away from their monotony.

East coast and West coast tourists come here out of curiosity. They have access to MULTIPLE cities already near them and most likely visited. Chicago stands out as unique and DIFFERENT than what they experience.

So do you think their figures are inflated? I'm curious what you think about the numbers. You don't ever say. I wonder if they are counting how many hoodrats are coming in to bring drugs and guns to the city from those bad old states like Indiana. They too are visitors. And how many illegals, another block of visitors. Though Groot would be happy to welcome them all and ask them to stay.

"Pimpier states"? I'm not sure I know what you mean by that. Wisconsin is a vastly prettier state than Illinois. They claim to have had over 112 million tourists in 2018. Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Michigan all have some pretty parts to their states. Illinois is one of the worst run states in the country, but pimpier. I'd use other terms for it. I grant you the cities you mentioned might be called gritty but then so is Chicago. It's just bigger. Are cities "petty" just because they are smaller in size. Culture, well of course there tend to be more art galleries, museums and such in bigger cities. Though I wouldn't call modern art culture. And where to those wanting to get away from the monotony and lunacy of Chicago go ... A red state.

According to a Rockport Analytics study commissioned by Visit Indy, 28.6 million visitors came to Indianapolis in 2016, the most recent year I could find. The Detroit area claims 19 million tourists in 2017. In 2018, Destination Cleveland claimed the city attracted 19.2 million visitors. In 2016, 23 million tourists visited the Milwaukee area. St. Louis hosts more than 25.8 million visitors each year according to the explorestlouis website. All manipulated figures too? Interesting that Detroit metro residents are closer to Toronto (206 miles) than they are to Chicago. I know which one I'd prefer visiting, even as Canada is today. It's approximately 350 miles from Chicago to Cleveland. How many tourists visiting the city would drive that far or take another flight to see Cleveland? East and west coast tourists come to the city to visit friends/family or on business for the most part. People from "petty" states, stay home, stay safe.

SCC, I'd appreciate you publishing this as it is relevant to the thread and I do offer some comparison numbers. I bat about 50/50 with ya. lol

Statistics from the Washington DC Tourism Council indicate..."Tourism in DC hit a record 22 million domestic visitors in 2016 and is expected to increase 2-3% into 2020. The greater Washington metro area is home to over 700 hotels, including those located within the DC proper, and having 3,000 hotel rooms under construction and another 6,000 in planning stages."
A Google search for Chicago states...
"As of September 2018, the Chicago Central Business District offers 132 hotel properties with 43,018 rooms."

So, to say that "58 million tourists" visited Chicago, the nations "Murder City" over app. 25 million in DC, the nations Capital City, is pure BS.

Perhaps IF they got the Chicago stats people that do 'tourism' to do 'murders and shootings,' we'd have truer stats.

Funny but I live here and won't go downtown. Nor will anyone I know.

They surround you now. At event lines, theater openings, restaurant wait lines. Like jackal's looking for a weak antelope while the cops are all busy not getting indicted.

Even worse these shitholes scan you for weapons now. Imagine 3,000 middle class and upper middle class people paying $150 a ticket, average age 50yo, bringing in a Gat to shoot the place up? Fucking idiots!

And worse case is a mob of 16yo aspiring rappers surrounding you. Who fucking needs it?

For those complaining about how expensive it is to visit and how it’s also a ghetto (but they never visit). Don’t worry, people with more money are taking your place. That’s why hotel rates are continuing to rise - demand is there even without you. Most people understand that the per capita crime rates aren’t as extreme as you seem to think, and even then - the VAST majority of that is from areas they won’t go anywhere near.

I missed the details around why these numbers are suspicious, but if Utah can get 10M tourists, with nothing but a crappy religious cult and undeveloped land, I’m not doubting that the Chicago number can be 5x that. Do we always see YOY growth? I agree there’s reason to be skeptical there, but I doubt is as extreme as some are claiming here. The downtown areas continue to see development and positive population migration, while the south and west sides are largely responsible for the crime and population exodus numbers. The city is just continuing to follow the trend of other major cities... cater to the wealthy and let gentrification remove the infected areas.

Let’s keep it going!

8:41 - you sound like the biggest snowflake on the planet. As someone who lives and works downtown (for over 20 years), I’ve never been robbed, assaulted or preyed upon by a “jackal”.

Most cops aren’t spending their time trying to avoid an indictment, most do their jobs, and Chicago has one of the safest downtowns of any major city.

But go ahead, cower in your corner and stay home because you are afraid from a couple of headlines you can’t contextualize. I’m sure medieval times is providing you all the great cultural experience you need

@9/10/2019 10:30:00, True there will always be rich SJW types willing to pay the price and of course they understand the young feral thugs are all just a misguided lot persecuted by the cops. And the mean old Chicago cops persecuting Juicy Smellit. And of course they types embrace the illegals coming to the sanctuary city. Just keep on taxing and the smart middle class folks will continue to leave the city and state, if they can. The very wealthy elitists are able to afford their own private security and can do all the virtual signaling they want via social media.

Chicago has always been a big convention city, so one would expect high numbers in that regard. But regular folks from the burbs and in the states that read the papers, what do they hear about the city. Nothing good. So why come to the city at all if you don't have to. You comment about Utah but they have some great National Parks. Zion had something like 4.5 million visits last year alone. Interesting bit I read by a blogger that visited the state. “We’ve seen a huge influx in visitors since Utah started marketing The Mighty 5 a few years ago,” a Ranger at Salt Lake City’s Timpanogos Cave National Monument commented. The state has been so successful, that lots of people fly into Salt Lake and then stop here on their way. We’ve especially noticed the dramatic increase in international visitors, where I think the campaign has been most influential. Whether it was Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, or Arches, each of Utah’s five National Parks was inundated with foreign visitors; such that at every site I heard more non-English (particularly German) than America's primary language".

Crime did not used to not be a regular thing in the better areas, now it is. I remember a 30 something couple carjacked last year in Bucktown, their 2018 Range Rover taken at gun point at 9:30 in the morning as the woman pulled out of their garage. Will this young couple really want to raise a family in the city when the burbs are so much safer from violent incidents like this? My late wife would have been insisting we get out of the city. But maybe the new breed of cat likes the excitement. These feral animals are roaming in the better areas looking for easy prey. But you are right there are fools that will take their chances even when they have many choices. Oh yes I know per capita there are other cities with much higher murder rates. That hardly matters to the person looking down the barrel of a gun as they are robbed of their possessions by a scumbag that could care less about killing you.

@3:29 - no, not SJW. Just capitalists who know how to keep up with an evolving economy to earn money and not worry about the expense of living in a city - and also able to have enough experience in the city to not be afraid of a couple of newspaper headlines pushing the south and west side carnage to be afraid of the whole city.

Someone was carjacked in buck town last year? Oh my god. It was also just last year that one of your “feral thugs” carjacked a father with his son in Naperville. It happens everywhere - and correct, I’m sure the person who experiences it has a very different opinion of the city afterwards. We just don’t talk about what happens in Naperville because nobody cares. The media hypes this stuff up to get eyeballs when it happens in Chicago, and you buy into it hard dude. It’s just that Naperville doesn’t make headlines because the media can’t get enough people to care about what happens in Naperville - because it’s just another suburb living off the runoff of Chicago. No traffic = no coverage. But if they can lump the south and west side headlines in with the occasional downtown high profile incident - then it becomes a city in crisis and you and the other snowflakes freak out about how “dangerous” it must be in a place you don’t live and now refuse to visit.

And I don’t care about your quote from a Utah park ranger. Utah and it’s cult are still lame as hell, and their quoted numbers have the same reliability problem. Plus... it’s still Utah.. I’d rather be shot.
