SCC, This was an email sent out from the President of the Anti Cruelty Society to its members and donors put out on Sunday. A lot of police officers are donors and members. Many police officers who are animal lovers give money to this organization. And you must know it’s police officers who are the ones saving stray animals from the streets of Chicago bringing them home to their families. Whether you can use this or not, I just want you to be aware of the mindset of the person running this organization. And no mention by her of the police officers detailed to the location of Grand and LaSalle who were trying to prevent the rioters from destroying this animal shelter.
Urgent Update
May 31, 2020
Last night Chicago saw protests that ended with riots and destruction across the city, especially in our River North area. As we saw the issues escalating yesterday afternoon, we moved all of our animals from the first floor to holding areas on higher floors, and we dismissed our staff early. Staff arrived at the building early this morning to evaluate the damage and care for the animals.
We sustained some tagging on the windows as well as lost half a dozen windows on Grand and on Wells. They are all double paned and only the first pane was breached. We were fortunate compared to some of the businesses around us who sustained significantly more damage. The building has been closed for all services today, although we do have staff onsite to care for the animals. We are beginning the clean-up process and making sure the building is secure.
This is a very sad day for our community and our country. I shared my thoughts with staff last week about the tragedy in Minneapolis and I want to share my opinion with you too.
We are so privileged to have a diverse staff, diverse in many ways, reflecting the diversity of Chicago. I cannot understand having to live in fear while driving, jogging, walking, or even being in my own home. I cannot understand the fear people feel for their children. I cannot understand feeling the weight of 400 years of oppression in a country that was founded on the principle that all persons are created equal, but our world has never delivered on that promise.
But I am angry and I am sad for us all. It was scary watching the news crews filming the corner of LaSalle and Grand last evening. This is usually the happiest corner in Chicago and last night it was anything but that. I hope every one of us who is not a person of color will open our hearts and minds and seek to support those who are hurting and frightened. I hope those who are protesting will do so peacefully and respectfully, and that we do not see the destruction that we saw throughout the city yesterday.
We must listen more than we talk. We must not try to frame this though our experience. We must support each other and understand that as an organization, we will listen. We will do our very best to ensure that our animals and our staff and volunteers are safe.
As the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.”
We appreciate the outpouring from our community asking how to support us. Donations at anticruelty.org/donate are always appreciated and helpful.
I hope that all of the residents of our city are safe and we look to the day where everyone is treated with compassion and respect because we all deserve more than what we have seen in the past few days. We must all be committed to building a more humane world.

I represented police officers for many years in civil cases and am well aware of the decisions that have to be made in split second and the second guessing. From the comfort of my home, I am watching all of this and thinking how terrifying and stressful this must all feel. I care.
I didn't vote for these inept asses, but their decisions (or lack of them) affect the safety of my family, my paid-for home and the stores where I shop. Several of my neighborhood stores (one of the most liberal and sympathetic to their nonsense neighborhoods, btw) were broken into and looted last night. Many of us were up all night, keeping an eye on homes and garages.
By all means, you beg them to come destroy YOUR house, car and neighborhood. Post your address. Your 'let it burn' bullshit is getting old.
