- Saying there is no way to reopen schools safely this fall, the Chicago Teachers Union is calling for virtual learning to continue in Chicago Public Schools when the new year begins after Labor Day.
“There is simply no way to guarantee safety for in-school learning during an out-of-control pandemic — and that means we must revert to remote learning until the spread of this virus is contained,” CTU President Jesse Sharkey said. “We stand for a safe and equitable reopening of the schools, but today COVID-19 cases are soaring instead of dissipating."
Anyone see the recent property tax bills? The largest levy by far is for the schools. In fact, at every recent opportunity, the schools have raised the property tax the maximum allowable limit.
If teachers aren't teaching eight hours, five day a week, then there really ought to be commensurate pay cuts. Groot could save tens of millions, perhaps hundreds, by slashing salaries. They aren't traveling to school, so the teachers are saving money in gas and car maintenance. They don't have to buy a new wardrobe. Supplies are now 100% the parental problems.
Bus contracts? Done, and the money returned to taxpayers.
The actual physical buildings should be all sparkling clean by now, so they can be sealed up and the janitorial staff laid off. More savings.

We were talking to a teacher the other day, and at their particular school, attendance was equal to approximately 22%. It seems that since everyone was guaranteed a "No-Fail" year, no one "attended" daily lessons. And the tablets that all the students got? Anyone know the return rate of CPS equipment? We heard under 50%. Way under 50%.

Let's see CPS's plan and if we need to stay out a quarter so be it. The decision has already been made and the Governor will announce it.

Hire a national company to create e-learning curriculum just like CPD has. Lay off all staff including teachers and administrators. You will see how fast the teachers will want to return to work. Other places, well it's different. The Archdiocese of Omaha Catholic Schools will open with 100 percent of students as scheduled this fall. Those paying also might want their money back if they are getting nothing for it. The city isn't afraid of that, don't pay your taxes you will just owe more. It's a lovely system really. They chose to pay the teachers and the pompous mayor and council says we know best, stay out of it peons. So will they get a nice free year off doing just a bit of online learning for full pay. Offer $5,000 vouchers to any student for private schools instead, and find enough teachers to teach the kids that want to attend Chicago Public Schools. Hire any education majors that are taking a gap year as teaching assistants for the first half of the year.

Cut the school budget. Stop waisting tax payers money. Defund the schools with lower enrollment. Some of the parents are means. Require documentation to justify who gets free tax payer meals. The well endowed can afford to provide their own meals or have excess to contribute to the cost of the meals the schools provide. The same goes for school supplies. The school system needs to be more accountable with its budget. Tax payers can no longer afford to write blank checks for their services they provide to the community. The Chicago Public School Superintendent is the steward of the tax payer money and has a fiduciary responsibility to spend taxpayer money wisely. Mayor you must also hold everyone accountable because voters will be holding you accountable come February 2023.

Teaching and now traffic court is being held online so I think cops should work remotely as well. Our states attorney refuses to press charges and hold criminals responsible, so why bother wasting time, energy, gas, resources etc.

There should be a TAX REBATE on the tax bills. The Auto Insurance Companies issued rebate checks because people were not driving as much due to the Covid Crisis/Shutdown. Rebate amount was small but at least it was something. As the old saying goes “Something is Better than Nothing!”

My kid’s catholic elementary school will be starting with classroom instruction in August. Everyone has to wear masks, socially distance (laughable), etc. Of course because I live in Chicago, I have to pay taxes for CPS AND $6200 in tuition for one child at a private school because my neighborhood public school is so bad (Garfield Ridge is a nice neighborhood, but half the public school kids are bussed in from the hood and have brought test scores and overall learning down to an abysmal level). Oh, and my taxes pay for one cop car in the square mile of 811 while if I lived in Englewood I’d have 4.
Some kids will get Covid. They will recover and life will go on. Eventually everyone will have contracted it. That’s the nature of a virus in a world that can’t isolate every person for a month without exception.

My school (West Side) bought everything student who was part of the free lunch program a tablet, it included everyone, $860 tablet per student with all the accessories and software. They were given out during the free breakfast, lunch, and dinner pickup. We had 8% of the students participate with daily virtual learning. To make matters worse when asked to return the tablets at the end of the school year, less than 10% were returned and parents advised the tablets were lost, broken, stolen, and in more than a few cases being used by family members for “other things” all have CPS inventory numbers. When we asked the CPS administration what to do, such as report them stolen, we were told no, we will just buy “new ones” when the next school year starts.

Re: tablets. My kids' school has been giving out iPads for years. HS school kids also get to keep them after graduation. Of course we are in the suburbs, with almost 100% graduation rate and an obscene number of kids getting into great schools. Oh, and no one minds that we have resource officers and a drug-sniffing dog.

Mayors on now, apologizing for making the teachers work.............she/it is looking for ways to get better food for the students....creating a hybrid school..... awaiting a vaccine for the future.
I believe I heard approx the same attendance percentage cited in the last paragraph. Think I heard it on a WLS radio news segment a couple of weeks ago. Obviously the majority of CPS parents consider CPS to just be a babysitter for their kids until the kids are old enough to take care of themselves on the streets.
Just announced by the Mayor, for the new school year, students will be required to have a wellness check done at home before coming to school. Shit, most of them won't get food at home.....

Teachers should be careful easy way to break the union. A standard curriculum wherein the students receive the instruction, just like e-learning they watch lecture and then can submit questions via computer to clarify the things they don't understand. Just one instructor needed to give lecture. The virtual classroom is no longer needed if only a miniscule percentage are logging on, just a video. By by teachers.

I taught in CPS for 7 years. There are so many wonderful teachers, assistants, and service providers. Having CTU represent the good that exists within the system points out another injustice. CTU bullies and screams to get demands met. I am not a fan to say the least. I am sure they will be a big advocate of the 1619 curriculum. Beware and watch what your kids are taught if they attend CPS. In regards to the virus, it is time for all teachers and students to return to the classroom. According to the CDC, 30 children under age 15 have died of Covid-19. In a typical year, 190 children die of flu. Only 2 children under age 18 have died in Chicago- fewer than were killed in recent shootings. The recovery rate is very high for Covid and unless all teachers are over the age of 65 with pre-exisiting conditions than they should return to work. Their students needs them.
They are breaking their contract by not returning. Start laying them off. Property Taxpayers should get a rebate and any parent wanting to send their kid to a private school should get a voucher. It will never happen since they are in bed with the mayor but one could hope.

Re: tablets. My kids' school has been giving out iPads for years. HS school kids also get to keep them after graduation. Of course we are in the suburbs, with almost 100% graduation rate and an obscene number of kids getting into great schools. Oh, and no one minds that we have resource officers and a drug-sniffing dog.

Couple minor points here,CPS Teachers did not work 2/3rds of the school year.It was 1/3rd.Our sharp posters here have presented the Mayor with the plan to move on from this communist organization.E Learning on Channel 11 with 3 Teachers assigned to each subject.1 for instruction and 2 for questions and tutoring failing students.You can have 100 students in each class.Cut your physical school buildings in half and dismiss 75% of the operational and administrative CPS Staffs.The Tablet fiasco is done away with and most importantly school children will not be sexually assaulted.Maybe some will actually legitimately pass their courses.
In fairness to the schools, they really *are* a breeding ground for all manner of diseases. Always have been. So it makes a degree of sense, especially since smart parents have been going private or home schooling for years.
One wonders, though: the teachers themselves may still be necessary to teach but, as this is presumably now The New Normal(tm) like the granny-feeling stations at the airports became in 2001, perhaps money could be saved by selling off a few of those expensive, high maintenance cathedrals of academia that they formerly preached in. Maybe turn them into apartment blocks and solve the housing crisis at the same time. Seriously, though, one of these days America needs to have a grown-up talk with itself about the purpose of public education and where the money is actually spent.
