Heavy Heavy Metal

An amusing arrest:

  • A Chicago man is facing felony theft charges after police allegedly found him hauling $14,263 worth of stolen sewer lids in the back of his pickup truck Thanksgiving morning on the West Side.

Lashawn Powell, 52, admitted that his friend pays him to collect the sewer lids from city streets so he can sell them to scrapyards, prosecutors said.

Cops responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle carrying stolen sewer lids in the Garfield Park neighborhood around 4:55 a.m. Thursday. It wasn’t long before they spotted Powell allegedly driving around with 31 manhole covers in his truck bed.

In case you’re wondering, sewer lids weigh about 249 pounds each, according to Wikipedia. So, 31 lids would weigh about 7,700 pounds. The city values them at $460 each, prosecutors said during Powell’s bond court hearing Friday.

Sounds like a dangerous pasttime - people might fall into one, and a vehicle hitting a hole that size will result in massive damage to the car and occupant(s). So what happens in Timmy and Crimesha's "justice system"?

  • After reviewing the allegations against Powell, Judge Susana Ortiz rattled off several factors she considered while settling on his bail amount.“Most importantly,” she said, is “the danger that it creates, removing sewer covers from the street. Heaven forbid someone should fall into an open sewer.”

She then released him on his own recognizance with electronic monitoring.

An I-Bond? Good thing he wasn't a hardened criminal!

  • Powell has eight felony convictions, including thefts, burglaries, and a robbery dating back to 1990.
Oh. Well, so much for that theory.

I hope the police at least impounded the truck.

It was used in the commission of a crime.

Go after the scrap yard too. Send in a horde of inspectors.

But the thief admitted it because he knows NOTHING will happen to him.

Someone tell me how letting this guy out and not charging him appropriately isn't prosecutorial malfeseance?

Speaking of sewer lids...

Remember all the mayhem from when the city
started plunking those landscaped round-about
in community side street intersections?

Scratch the surface and you'll find a sewer
lid resting on the built-up cast iron collar
IN THE MIDDLE of those round-abouts.

The collar weights about a ton iwrc...

Some dumb ass drove right through a fresh
round-about one night...

Tore the total ass, dick & balls from underneath
the car, put a bulge in the roof with his noggin
and left blood, hair, skin, teeth and the stink
of shit in the car.

SOB had to going at least 45 or 50 mph because he
dislodged the collar and knocked it off kilter by
about 30 degrees...

A nearby citizen:
"I heard that m/fer tear his shit up..."

Oh yeah... No plates.
VIN was clear, no record.

The tow guy laughed his ass off too.

Glad he had enough sand to cover the leaking
oil, gas and coolant.

Reports sometimes write themselves on
the Westcide...

Sewer lid thieves should be shit beaten.
We rate them with the assholes who climb
lamp posts to cock traffic signals.

You're a special m/fer with a side of
fries to do that kind of rotten shit.

A thought...
Anybody remember the idiots who stole an alley in 011?

According an article in the Chicago Community Bond Fund (Far Left Wing group that advocates for the criminals-no bonds & no pre trial detention). They say on 23 Dec 19 Judge Ortiz placed a $300,000.00 D-bond on a defendant who was at the scene where 13 people were injured by gunfire and they claim he was not the shooter.

They are claiming Judge Ortiz violated General Order 18.8A and State law by imposing bonds that are too high for defendants to afford.

My guess is Judge Ortiz was sent to the Democratic People’s Republic of Cook County Reeducation Camp where her brain was steam cleaned and blown dried for such an “egregious” setting of bond. She is now in step with the movement.

Since the People’s Republic frowns on cash bonds let's take some of those sewer covers and attach them to the defendant’s ankles instead of the electronic monitors which have been a failure. At least the defendant could not run from the police.

1. Happened to me in 1975. Worked for the sewer department on weekends. (cake ass fucking job man) and some old duffer had a 1960 station wagon chocked full of the elusive treasure. Because this used to happen all the time, we were short on lids. They had to call a carpenter in on a Saturday to make temporary wooden lids out of 2 x 8s and staples.
2. Years later we get a call, "please come to 11th and State to identify property." We get there and 2 old ruffians are in handcuffs, apprehended in the act of stealing, what they called, "city property" which turned out to be a gas company frame that holds the lid, which had been removed by someone to do a street repair. It had a chunk broken off one side so when you rolled it down the street it would thump and almost fall over on you. They rolled this thing for a few blocks like that before the long arm of the law grabbed them. A short copper with 4 guns and a $30 hair cut insisted we call it city property so they could charge them. Me AND my boss said "fuck no, that's the gas company's" and walked out leaving the little shit high and dry. The bums earned it. Their master plan was to roll it a mile to, just thought of this, up the hill at 16th st to get it to the scrap yard there, in the morning! Life was rougher back then, not so many handouts.

Same thing happened several years ago in Aurora. A couple of knuckleheads lifted numerous sewer lids and sold them for scrap. Ironic thing is the lids were all stamped with "City of Aurora Water and Sewer". Couple of years later, new procedures were established dealing with scrapping all materials in the city--- businesses we had had problems with forever. (Needless to say the scrappers were none at all happy with the new procedures.) We caught the morons too. I can assure you that thy weren't released on I-Bonds. As for the new scrapping procedure laws, they were a big reason our burglaries plummeted from the first year they became law.

Street Value of $460 which means the City usually pays four to five times more.

Cast iron commodities @ $110 per ton (spot price) the FakeNews would like you to believe that would have put around +/- $423 solid dollars in the manhole bandits billfold...during these challenging and difficult times.
Scrappers usually get anywhere from 25-50% of the spot price, and if he didn’t use a middle man (friend, don’t know his name but he stay’on the west side) which is probably the scrap yard proprietor, his net would be in the sub $200 range, less the “friend” processing fees.

FunFact: Aluminum cans are selling @ 33¢ lb. x 7,700 lb. (31 cans/lb) and garbage picking is 100% sustainable, renewable, Green New Deal legal !

It hurts to think some PO having to unload, inventory, put in bulk storage and wait forever to get those 31 300# lids picked up by the S&S, then expect them to show up in mister-meaner courts in April. Remember, manhole bandit didn’t “steal” the lids, he “collected” them for a friend.
The Area gets the clearance and that’s a plus for the year end bonus.

"...in the several weeks beginning in mid-February 2004...manhole covers started to disappear around the world. As Chinese demand drove up the price of scrap metal to record levels, thieves almost everywhere had the same idea. As darkness fell, they levered up the iron covers and sold them to local merchants, who cut them up and loaded them onto ships to China. In Taiwan...Mongolia...Kyrgyzstan...pilferers worked to satisfy China's hunger. More than 150 covers disappeared during one month in Chicago. Scotland's "great drain robbery" saw more than a hundred vanish in a few days. From Montreal to Gloucester to Kuala Lumpur, unsuspecting pedestrians stumbled into holes. [A lot of DEATHS result, but the newsies like silly-face stories.] In Kolkata, India more than 10,000 manhole covers were taken in two months in 2004. These were replaced with concrete covers, but these were also stolen, this time for the rebar inside them."

I'm not casting aspersions on CWB, they do too much good reporting on the general-fuckery that goes on in the city & county and I know they can only work with what they're given but there are some things here that wanna make you go... HUH?

First off, citing Wiki as a source on Manhole Covers and that given weight of 249# each. We all know they've fricken heavy but THAT heavy? If so, it's amazing some scrawny Street & San worker could remove one - via the old-fashioned Pick-Axe method or that new Hook Tool some ingenious mind came up with.

Which brings up another point. Were these all the Solid-Face Manhole Covers? Or were they the ones with Drainage Slots or Holes in them? Were they all Sewer Covers or were some from Communist-Edison and/or Peoples (Republic of Madiganistan) Gas Company Manholes? Which iirc, some of those are Square and most of those won't come near weighing 249# each.

Then we have the 52y.o. 'alleged' culprit, Lashawn Powell, if that guy can lift 249# of Cast Iron dead-weight from the street, and stack THIRTY-ONE of those Sewer Covers in the bed of his pick-up truck all in one night, he should immediately be signed onto the USA's Olympic Weight-Lifting Team. Annnnnd the mayor should hire him as a Chicago Crime-Fighting Super Hero as he's probably impervious to bullets too!

Last but not least we have the guy's pick-up truck. A suspicious vehicle callers said. I guess so, with 7,700 Pounds of Cast Iron Sewer Lids piled in the truck's bed, I bet it WAS suspicious. Riding so low, it left 3" deep tire-indentations in the asphalt as it went down the street. It's now a permanent 'Low-Rider'.

Squad, 11-Robert

I worked a drug case years ago and while following these jag offs they drove out to the suburbs. they would drive into dark neighborhoods, park for a minute and then drive away. at first we thought they were lost but then we thought they were having car problems. we couldn't see exactly what they were doing.

then we were able to see that when they parked a couple of them would get out of the car, lift the sewer covers right next to the car and put them in the backseat. we got ahold of one of the local depts and had the car stopped. they had fifteen sewer covers in the backseat and a few bags of heroin and weed. the copper told us that they've been hit hard with these thefts and a week before two accidents happened. in one of them they charged this 70 year old with a dui because after hitting the hole he lost control and hit a tree a block from his house. the other was a young girl that blew out her tire and rear ended a parked car.

I get a call from the copper a week later and he said their felony denial denied the felony theft or possession of stolen property because the thefts couldn't be put on any one of the assholes and, here's a direct quote, "they could have picked up the sewer covers not knowing they were stolen"!!!!! He was able to get charges on the dope though because it was in the car with all of them and no one claimed ownership!!! WAIT...WHAT?? you're going to approve charges because the dope was in the car and everyone had access to it but there's a different standard for the stolen property??

several months later I get court notice and I call the copper. he tells me not to bother coming because the state pled the case down and gave each of the assholes drug court. so even in Dupage they don't give a fuck.

Never say never, but if Trump finds a judge willing to put his life on the line they need to protect him now and for years to come.

Please watch the hearings tomorrow in Arizona. More stories of blatant fraud and the Democrats and media will of course be crickets. Welcome to the third world.

There was absolutely no rules in this election. Gift cards for voting, parties, 400 million from Zuckerberg, sharpie markers, dominion voting systems, every trick imaginable and right in the face of the public. It only gets worse once Biden enters office. Not looking forward to the future.

Hope the asshole boosted tire pressure at least ten pounds.
That's one hell of a "Ghetto Pickup" with a sinking back end

I feel like God has abandoned America. The comments here regarding voter fraud, allowing criminals to walk with barely a slap on the wrist and complete disregard for hard-working, honest taxpayers just is sad. The US has been infiltrated by Satan’s minions. Chicago is one of the hearts of Hell.

"...Go after the scrap yard too. Send in a horde of inspectors..."

"...I can't believe a scrap would accept them..."

"...Seems that whoever is buying these lids needs to be charged and have their assets seized..."

One question, if I may...

What color is the sky in the make believe world you live in???

You're a jerk. He's right. To hell with that scrap yard. If the cops have time for sending underage people to purchase cigarettes and liquor, then bust the store, they can make a similar move on a scrap yard. You sound like Smollett's lawyer. Jerk.

Westcide m/fers are terrifying with their
vehicular mayhem... Horrific crash scenes
no human critter has any right walking
away from, they somehow manage to do
with alarming regularity.

To wit?

A full sized GM ghetto flyer on the sidewalk
with a FIRE HYDRANT where the engine USED
to be...

No bullshit... The hydrant was flowing like
Niagara Falls through the open windows and
flowing down an adjacent I-290 off ramp.

And it was winter...

Seeing driver reaction to their car skiing up that
ramp in full brake-lock, bulge-eyed in panic,
white-knuckle death grip on the steering wheel
to bend it double while whizzing through that
intersection...

>ZZZIIIIIP!<

"OHDAMNOHSHITOHFUCK!"

You would THINK a nearby CPD squad putting
on a light show would clue m/fers to slow
that ass down...

>ZZZIIIIIIP!<

"Squad... We need salt AND sand on top of
the Water Department and a CRANE to lift
this sled off that hydrant..."

"12xx? A crane?"

"Yup... Or a big-assed wrecker. No amount of yanking
by one or two tow trucks is going to do anything about
a car on a hydrant and the engine shoved backwards
through the firewall and dashboard into the
passenger compartment."

"12xx, 10-4 we'll let you know who's otw."

Oh yeah...

Screws and brackets for the plates laying
on the sidewalk as pretty as you please...

Police Reports wrote themselves
on the Westcide.

Police Like You Have No Friends.

Look.
Point & Laugh.
Leave.
