Why is Putzker borrowing more money (see 12:01 AM post below)?
Because the Illinois economy has disappeared:
After Black Friday comes Small Business Saturday, when Americans are encouraged to support their local retailers. But there will be over 11,200 fewer Illinoisans running retail stores on Nov. 28, thanks to COVID-19 and state-mandated lockdowns.
And when it is time to take a shopping break to eat and drink, there will be nearly 17,600 fewer Illinois bar and restaurant owners to serve you.
That's almost 29,000 fewer small stores, bars and restaurants. We don't know what these businesses would have generated in Sales Taxes, but think about this:
- each of these places carries some sort of License to Operate - state or county or local - or a combination of all three;
- casino gaming machines at a bunch of these bars are licensed individually;
- Chicago requires separate licenses for food, liquor, tobacco, signage, etc
29,000 businesses are not generating tens of millions in these fees alone, and that translates into hundreds of millions in sales taxes, not to mention associated businesses, parking, hotels across the entire state.

After Jan 20th Biden will wave a magic wand and the pandemic will be over. Businesses will return, the economy will bounce back and unemployment will be under 4%. Illinois will be out of debt, the ledger will be in the black, with a surplus.
That has as much a chance of happening as Illinois has of being in the black and running a surplus.
Time to open up your wallet to make up the difference. What? You don’t want to make a donation to the State or City coffers? That’s ok, we are in a deep deep blue state where politicians love to tax tax tax and where they control virtually every gov’t unit and everything in a ONE PARTY state. So this one party has all the power and they will pass legislation allowing them to PURGE your WALLET.

Maybe we can just borrow more money from payday loans to cover the immediate state bills. Then we can plant money trees next spring to cover the difference. If we are still short, we can follow the rainbows for the pot of gold. Any of these are viable options to make up for the fiscal shortfalls but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT reduce spending. It just won’t work!

Retired guy living in rural Illinois here. Small businesses around my area including bars and restaurants are folding like a broken accordion and are never going to open in probably years. Empty storefronts and closed/for rent signs in many windows. The local beer dispensary that I visit has been around for 70 yrs and is on life support according to the bar maid who works there she told me recently. I live 5 minutes from the Wisconsin border and visit the restaurants, bars, and shops. I also buy gas there as often as possible, usually 5-10cents a gallon cheaper. 5% sales tax on purchased goods as well. It is a shame to see what the lockdowns have done to the local economy but, as usual, the democraps who run the state DON'T CARE!
Sad part is how much the economy is based off the service industry instead of manufacturing or other businesses (computer, software, raw materials or maintenance and repair).
To rely on restaurants and bars for the main source of income is ridiculous.
I expect the debts irresponsibly run up by Dems in Illinois and elsewhere to be federalized shortly after Dementia Joe and Kamasutra are sworn in.

If someone can cash in for another 2 years and then abscond, why should that person care about what happens in the state after 2 years?
And maybe (probably, I’d say) there will be more rounds of federal bailouts.

Plus the thousands of us who won't do any commerce within Chicago/Cook county. With the exception of groceries I cant remember the last time I bought anything within those limits.
