Off Duty Killed
- An off-duty Chicago police officer has died, after crashing an ATV in the West Ridge neighborhood Tuesday evening. Police said, around 5:45 p.m., a 29-year-old man was driving an ATV east on the 2500 block of West Bryn Mawr Avenue, when he tried to go around a
Honda SUV, and slammed into it.
The off-duty officer was taken to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition, and later died of his injuries. Police said they are investigating the crash.
According to the Illinois Farm Bureau, it's illegal to operate ATVs on city streets.
There's a reason the Department got rid of the four-wheelers years ago - they're horrible street vehicles.
That's also why there's an order in effect forbidding chasing these vehicles.
And yes, we know.
UPDATE: A lot of people know.

Horrible as to what happened, but also no need to be driving like a maniac through parks and all over 24 district. Also no need to run away from cops when being pulled over. Thank God Sgt did not chase him otherwise he'd be stripped now. No one to blame but yourself for this one.
W-T-F! Again, who's doing the hiring?
“That's also why there's an order in effect forbidding chasing these vehicles. And yes, we know”.
In true Ghetto Lottery fashion, RM’s family has reportedly already retained counsel.
They were huddled-up at the hospital ER discussing strategy vs. CPD. And according to my source at the CCME, they were discussing grieving strategy as they left 2121 post-autopsy.
Unreal. But not entirely surprising.
I heard he was crashed in to by the ATV driver
Rules for thee not for me.
We are our own worst enemies.
So sad! So young! My condolences to his friends and family.
SCC,
I ask that you heavily moderate these comments. This was a tragedy. Please allow his family, his fellow Officers and our profession to grieve without the clouds of speculation hindering the ascension of our prayers.
Thank you,
019
Over heard the major accidents guys saying he took off from an on duty sgt 2 times.
RIP Brother. It was a senseless accident that was preventible. Life lesson learned.
Chances are that he was already in line for several merit promotions. Oh well, that's how the cookie crumbles the ATV or whatever.
We know the story may he RIP!
Governor Fred flinstone is getting us all electric vehicles from the UK.
Let me know when I can drive my family from Chicago to say Wisconsin and not have to worry about charging the battery.
Stupid people
The bosses in 024 have no clue what they are doing. The Lts are awful and Sgts have only worked in slow north side districts. They dropped the ball once again.
Idiot crashed on his own. Immature moron. Is this a retired boss’s kid?
It’s a tragedy. It really is. Monday morning quarterbacking this one is necessary. Why was he fleeing from the police? Why was he hired on to a job that requires, or at least used to require a stringent background check? Why are the hiring standards being lowered to the point of rock bottom? Why can’t the dept change the fucking work schedule already to a 10 or 12 hour day so we can operate with MUCH less and not need to hire the absolute shit of society just to pump out numbers.
God Bless, RIP
SSC on a side note I'm so happy to see you again.
CPD seems like it no longer hires the best and brightest. This officer should not have been doing that but to flee from fellow officers and risk his life is stupid. He probably could have talked his way out of simply by pulling over, apologizing and telling them his on his way home now....
Be the change!!!
What a dumbass
sorry not sorry, but come on......if you're a chicago cop and you're riding a 4 wheeler not in the effin farms in some rural area then what the hell are you doing?
smh.
play stupid games win stupid prizes
Keep lowering the standards. All the Sht heads ride these on the west side…. Hmmm.
Again. Stop lowering the standards
Please provided demographic profile of the officer. Tragic that he died, but the comment that he was working with IAD to see who would engage him in a chase is alarming.
We need to know his background.
Save Chicago / Save America.
You know you’ve entered the Thunderdome when you start seeing ATVs driving on streets.

1. 'clouds of speculation' cannot ever 'hinder' sincere prayers.
2. Anyone with a bit of experience here knows that SCC never posts a comment without first reading it.
3. You want comments 'heavily moderated'? Get yourself an assbook account.
4. The determining of the sequence of events resulting in this death are relevant and speculations are the potential pieces to consider.
5. Getting to just the facts requires examining even the most absurd speculations.
Nothing whatsoever can distract from sincere grieving. Least of all comments of whatever content.
Why can’t the dept change the fucking work schedule already to a 10 or 12 hour day so we can operate with MUCH less and not need to hire the absolute shit of society just to pump out numbers.

Easy now, son! These bottom feeders with badges are funding my pension. The more the merrier.
And use your head, dummy… these morons are what’s referred to as a “win-win”. Not only do they contribute to the pension, they usually step on their dick hard enough to get fired before they’re eligible to collect one themselves.
And in the interim, they always provide entertainment with their tomfoolery and shenanigans.
I don't feel bad for the deceased. I feel bad for the cops that are involved and will have to deal with the fallout whether they chased him or not.
Autopsy might show the departed was under the influence of booze or something else. If so, at least that might explain the reckless stupidity that resulted in his death.
RIP. Prayers for the copper and family.
what a dumb F…
no sympathy for stupid
A tragedy that was his own making. His actions truly showed his character. A goof prior to being hired, became a bigger one after getting on.
Truly, he played stupid games and he won a stupid prize!
There's the new hiring standards in affect.
OT
Heard the recruitment unit was hitting roll call spreading rumor about giving officer bonuses to recruit people joining CPD...
Yea sure...I don't see ANY problem with that.
Someone please tell them clown to stop selling their souls to be house mice.
That unit is a total failure; What a bunch of clowns.
Stupid is as stupid does.. dumb azz no sympathy here.
2500 block of W Bryn Mawr is in 020. Not 024 .,
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Upside is the herd was thinned by 1.
officer2friendly…if you want to pray also pray for the driver of Unit#2 (whose life was just turned upside down). No need to “speculate” as the accident report is clearly there at CWB Chicago. Personally I would like to congratulate Unit #2 as he/she saved the department from lots of future embarrassment and scandal and saved the city money.
Hopefully it’s ruled a LODD, rumor has it he was working with IaD seeing if officers would engage him in a vehicle pursuit.
Thant's hilarious if the rumor holds true! Unfortunately we'll never find out. He was actively working with IAD w/ clear intent to jam his fellow brothers and sisters up. And then this happens instead. Can't make this shit up!
Red Forman says... Dumbass!
More reckless and unbelievable acts by younger police will continue. The reason is simple. Society can't expect this generation to be held to a higher standard because of their easily acquired job when the rest of the public basically does whatever they want.
Remember that older generations want vacations, good times, and success. Newer generations just want everyone to think they have those things. This generation sees reality very differently and behave accordingly. The ones reading this are probably offended. Sorry the facts arent "lit', fam, no cap".
Too sad.
Off duty cop tearing up field riding an illegal street vehicle doa. Karma is a bitch. Play stupid games win really bad prizes.
Hard to work up any pity for this stupid stunt.
Hmmm…well it was his ATV that was “off-road”…it’s too bad he ended up being “on-road”.

You’re a fuckin’ moron if you think that’s actually true.
What other rumors have ya heard? How about the one where IAD is providing citizens with replica firearms to point at coppers to see if they shoot without actually being fired upon first?
And as tragic an incident as this was, it was completely self-inflicted. People like RM slip through the cracks during the hiring process all the time. There should be a “Maturity & Common Sense” threshold met to be hired, but we all know that would immediately be deemed “racist”. What he did was completely irresponsible (not to mention illegal) and he wound up paying the ultimate price for fucking up. A Line of Duty Death is the last thing it’ll be ruled.
You’ll get no sympathy here when someones actions have the possibility of putting coppers in the trick bag. And that someone was a fellow officer? Nope. Fuck you. We have enough to navigate in this climate to worry about friendly fire.
File this one under “Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes” and call it a day.
How many officers have to die on those things before the message is clear??? What a waste...
Stupid or arrogant or both?
I don't see why the atv isn't street legal. Shit, these days people are driving anything: hoverboards, one wheel electric skateboards, gas powered skateboards, electric bikes, electric scooters, minibikes, whatever. No one cares anymore. No rule of law. When's the last time you saw anything besides a car even attempt to stop at a stop sign. The hipsters have won.
Thank God for RR right-a-ways.....
This is what lowered hiring standards brings
No sympathy for this clown. Dumb ways to die…

Clouds of speculation? Reckless illegal behavior got him killed.

Because operating with less will be a mirage. Yes we can answer jobs better but we are always one bad incident away from pure chaos. The department will get used to having 3,500 less bodies but they will be sorely missed when poop hits the fan
Self terminating in mature idiot !
For the person making the comment about 12 hour schedule Not good. I worked all schedules and also for a time in a slow department as well. 12 hours can kill your entire body. Yeah you get some extra days off but you’re sleeping all over your days off. I would never want that back again. Imagine working 12 hours permanently in Chicago. Big cities rarely have that schedule. Too much time on the job continuously ain’t healthy. Firemen and such get to sleep on their long work day. But cops can’t. 8.5 or 9 hour schedules are 8.5 or 9. 12 is just too much. Be careful what you wish for.
I knew him. He didn't come across as this kind of person. Not sure what happened.
Looks like a case of Darwin taking over! Though sad and the loss of life is never good seems to be simply self inflicted and now the on duty officers who were doing their job have to possibly go through the psychological trauma and maybe the aftermath of this carnival show called the Chicago Police Department and the clowns who run it! I’m sure we will see Crump or low life Loevy soon ringing the coin kettle! play stupid games and win stupid prizes!!!
You could take that to the bank!

Studies on California cops show efficiency and awareness decline seriously in the last few hours of a twelve hour shift and that results in more complaints against officers (who are just not operating at peak ability anymore). Tired humans often exhibit poor judgement. Agreed on 'be careful what you wish for'.

You are an empty headed dumb fuck if you're not trolling. IAD is actively starting traffic pursuits to catch cops who pursue? Assuming you are part if the change.

Where are they hiding Harold Lewis the PO on Lori Lightfoot detail promoted to CO of no unit?
Ashame he gets to retire with an unearned over the top pension. Tax payers are suckers!
All I can think about is the “Be The Change” poster they are peddling all over the country for new hires. How’s that “Change” working out?
It wasn't his first time riding the atv illegally and certainly not his first time running from the police. He died committing a felony, fleeing and eluding, not prosecuted by kimmy, but a felony nonetheless. This was every bit his responsibility. We are defined by the choices we make.

Spoken by someone NOT accustomed to work.
5 year veteran made 130k plus last year. Why is he running from the police when he is the police?! And why are they chasing him? Plenty of places to ride 4 wheelers. Imagine he was a mental health episode of some kind.

So what you’re saying is that when life gets hard just speed off on an ATV, putting yourself, other officers and the general public at risk?
“Vile” things about the dead ? Please… we’re stating facts and I’ll never sugarcoat the truth or tap dance around the obvious.

You don’t get sympathy from coppers who are breaking the law, feeding into the public’s hate and propaganda that all cops are bastards and that they are corrupt criminals. His actions put himself, his family and every single person who wears a police uniform (world wide) in harms way and ruins their reputations. His family and friends should feel bad, but that’s where sympathy ends for his loss of life.

Also 019 here, there’s no speculation. It’s now known he was doing donuts in a park and fled from the police. He’s lucky he only harmed himself, no remorse from me because he actively and Knowingly endanger innocent people and potentially other officers with his reckless actions. The only speculation I have is whether he has previously rode with the large groups of atv/dirt bikes that are seen doing wheelies, driving recklessly, wreaking havoc across the city. I mean it can only be assumed since there’s no legal way to operate an atv in the city, and I don’t know RM to own or frequent any property outside the city. Can’t make this shit up.
You guys act like you all don’t hop on your quad, hit a few skids in the local park during t-ball practice, and run from your local beat officers before coming into work. Show some respect, this could have been anyone of us.
You are an idiot. But I bet you had sympathy for Jason Van Dyke.
7/21/2023 05:57:00 PM
How did you deduct that conclusion from the original comment?
Now deceased Cop, off duty, knowing the laws of Illinois and Chicago, operates an off road, illegal vehicle on the City streets, flees Police. Again, he knows or we should he assume he knows the laws, which he took an oath to up hold, then puts himself, Cops and innocent people in harms way.
Whom exactly are you calling an idiot?
If you don’t have anything nice to say, STFU. He is still one of us. And he died. This Monday morning quarterbacking is insensitive, disrespectful and uncalled for. You perfect person that never did anything, go judge yourself.
"""The bosses in 024 have no clue what they are doing. The Lts are awful and Sgts have only worked in slow north side districts. They dropped the ball once again."""
Always been an asshole District as far as white shirts go.
How can you have sympathy for a person who broke the law, (esp when your sworn to uphold the law), taunted police and put himself and others in danger being reckless?
Yes, it's sad that a loss of life occurred for being STUPID but imagine how the driver of unit 2 felt. Im sure Mamma and Pappa are looking for ways to blame her/him. It's always someone else's fault. ACTIONS have consequences.
Never seen that many idiots coming on the job as I’ve seen for past 5 years.
