Union vs "Bad" Union
The Contrarian has discovered yet another instance of media two-facedness:
An arbitrator in the contract negotiations between the City of Chicago and the union representing Chicago police, FOP Lodge 7, has backed a longstanding labor right for officers to choose arbitration in police misconduct cases rather than face judgment in front of the Chicago Police Board.
The arbitrator’s ruling threatens to undermine the power of the city’s civilian oversight agency, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), and the Chicago Police Board that renders judgments derived from COPA investigations, in the civilian discipline process. For Chicago reporters, the possibility of COPA and the Police Board losing complete control over disciplinary matters, particularly the meting out of punishments to officers, is a nightmare scenario.
And this brings the leftist press into conflict with their own union desires:
The media attacks on arbitration pose a problem for the city’s left-wing media. As arbitration is a right enjoyed among union members throughout the country, including teacher’s unions mired in scandals involving sex abuse allegations against students, one wonders, where are the stories by the media questioning the right of arbitration for these scandal-ridden institutions?
Moreover, many of these “journalists” are members of unions themselves. The Chicago Tribune voted to organize years ago in the wake of the paper being sold to hedge fund owners. Hardly a week goes by without these reporters bemoaning or expressing annoyance with the big bad, capitalist owners not giving them basic union rights and benefits.
We're quoting a couple paragraphs. Go read it all at the link above.

Public sector unions shouldn't exist to begin with. Even FDR (of all people) agreed with that. Seniority matters more than performance & we can't fire the lazy shitbags. They just get put at a slow station, somewhere out of the way. The job to them is a step above a welfare check.
Then again they can suck some testes
Everyone deserves ALL their rights. Even police officers.
If you don't want police to use their right to mediation, then remove the right to mediation from their contracts.
Just prepare to compensate the police for their contract rights.
Do not give up your union rights, ever!!!
Would the city and the state ever give up their prohibition on the police striking?
If not? Why should you give up your rights to mediation?
Do as TH Y say not as THEY do. Simple as that. Otherwise THEY will come after you.
The guy behind the Contrarian is a moron. He was always a miserable prick. Yet, he had no reason to be miserable. Never had a difficult assignment in his career.
The politicals effectively have their own union, as their common goals demonstrate clearly.
Politicals are schemers.
Their schemes are solely to pick the pockets of the working, earning population.
Not much more a union than that.
The journalist union is shit. Their benefits are locked in at 2010 levels. They can't strike because the printers and drivers won't honor them.
Fuck the tribune and scumtime. I havent read either one in 10 yeatrs. All full of lefty bullshit then.

Let me tell you something.
People who are assigned to places like 019, 018, 011, etc for the majority of their career are usually miserable. They have no idea about dealing with shit that the other half of the department deals with.
People cry about the dumbest shit. The only fucking thing you have right to is seniority. Anything else, you’re gonna have to play ball. If you don’t want to play ball, then know what the fuck that entails. As AC/DC says “it’s a long way to top if you want to rock n’ roll.” That applies to the ball lickers and the guys who are cool with eating shit while they get the seniority. The sooner you realize this, the happier you will be.
Commies gotta commie.
OT: Just to get some perspective: a government regulatory agency like OSHA says there’s no health hazard with keeping illegal immigrants in the lobby and has no problem with them sleeping on the floor of the 12th District station for the foreseeable future; but we can’t get government approval to open the lockup to house prisoners for 8 hours in the same damn building because it violated some type of regulation?
And how exactly are these illegals “refugees fleeing to safety” or “migrants looking for work” when they voluntarily skipped by a dozen other countries (which speak their native language, could house and provide work for them) and somehow landed here in the USA thousands of miles away?! {Honk Honk} Clown World!

The Contrarian is not run by a police officer. An officer writes for it on occasion, but the person who built it is an incredibly bright and well-respected citizen.
Shout out to some folks that don't know but lurk in the comment section ---
Unions sadly have a traditionally BAD image and it's sometimes understandable based on prior historical events. However, I challenge you to look at WHY something happened from both sides of the issue (if you can). Was it a labor issue? Was it money/greed? Was it revenge? No idea, but everyone screws up, we are all human. At the basic level, without unions, worker rights that people take for granted wouldn't exist. Everyone deserves a voice and deserves equal rights in the workplace.
Either a king/ceo or a union harnessing ABSOLUTE control IS a bad thing, "power/control" NEEDS checks and balances. It allows for accountability and due process. For a reasonable union and ceo/king to exist, it also takes communication with ideally the removal of egos. Will this ever happen perfectly? Not likely, but I won't say it can't happen either. A union standing for worker's rights IS a necessity. The most common myth is if you are in a union, you're bulletproof. This is 100% wrong, the only thing a union can do is ensure someone has proper representation and the incident/investigation/issue follows due process/bargained rights. Many people get fired, fined, and disciplined for screwing up... just might not be newsworthy or even able to be released due to a thing called privacy (attorney client privileges etc.)
What can make it BE better?
SHOW UP TO YOUR MEETINGS. If you can't, call, email, visit any of your reps. That's their job! We don't have an all-seeing eye; you're allowed to ask questions and the goal is NEVER to make a mountain out of an anthill (so to speak). Proper rights afforded by a proper and respectful contract bargaining session is one of the MANY reasons why America is still the greatest country on Earth. I apologize if I ruffled feathers, but nearly 15 years in and this is what I've learned. Also remember... EGOS are most often ALWAYS the problem at the core of any issue on both sides.
/rant off (sorry)

Sad and true, has deep psychological problems needs help. Spineless coward, ensured J Katz election, Murray hooked up with him, costing Murray big time, just quit when he lost the election.
Would not stay on and help the union..Now claiming credit for arbitration, I, not we/ us the union leadership..
The attached article is spot on!

In all due respect I whole heartedly disagree. Public sector should have the right to unionize since you are working with (against?) a local, state or federal government to negotiate a contract. Private sector hell no. If you want to play less for say an electrician and they agree to the rate then so be it. As for part 2 of your post, I agree.
I’m regards to the FOP there is a pretty interesting documentary on HBO called telemarketers that shows how these scam companies are ripping people off on the backs of FOPs and PACs. Even covers Lodge 7 and how officers injured in the line of duty had to sue to get their $.
Regular citizen here who stands up for my rights when necessary.
If you guys don't stand up for your own rights, then none of us can.

Unions are the reason why our roads are full of potholes, our streets are filled with rats, our children are dumb, public service sucks, and the same politicians keep winning!
Unions are all about themselves. Soon there will be no one left here to tax but unions members themselves.
Last man turn off the damn lights!
OT: Why the hell does a modern day major metropolitan police training academy need over 100 coppers for a 90 day “security detail”??? Two dudes in my district volunteered. They both have a ton of time on btw. Do they know some secret?? It beats working for a living and it’s a great way for the city to waste $100,000 a year on two full duty coppers that’s for sure.
Any word on residency?
This arbitrator ruling is the biggest WIN for Chicago police officers since the contract was signed in 1981. Period.
It’s the reason why this article was published in the first place and why SCC posted it up on the blog. Because everyone from city hall, law firms, the media.. not to mention a lot of other police departments and unions, are all paying attention and realizing how big it is.
This is bigger than raises or retros. It means coppers can do their jobs and if they make mistakes, they can expect a reasonable and independent voice to administer adjudication (discipline or otherwise).

What do 018,019 and 011 have in common? I don’t see your point.

What world are you living in?! Yes this is a win we can applaud and savor for now...but its just a win that will be shrugged off in a few weeks. The city and Dude Inc. still has plenty of ways to unfairly and unjustly screw over cops that are "just doing their jobs". It's like saying our team won 1 game during a season of continual loses and now you think we're going to the Super Bowl? Bwahahahaha! If you read the original article and in any way have come to the conclusion that you can now do police work in Chicago then you are dangerous pants-on-the-head lunatic.

Yes you will stay in the city of Chicago or resign!
FOP is a fraternal organization not a union
Jim Jackstavich Is a smart mouth piece of sh-t. He doesn’t give a damn about the members. He sh-t them. Don’t bother calling him before 10 AM, he’s never in the office.

I just got dumber reading this....put down the whiskey and step away from the computer please. 019, 018, and 011??? HUH???
Speaking of unions. The news is out that CTU President Stacy Davis Gates' eldest son attends a catholic high school (De La Salle) not his neighborhood CPS high school (Harlan).
SDG has been telling people her son goes to DLS because he likes soccer. No soccer at Harlan or at south and west CPS schools like Austin HS? No worries SDG's buddy, Mayor BJ is allowing for the Chicago Fire's million dollar facility to be built on CHA land. This when residents have been screaming for affordable housing in the spot. We all know how hungry Austin residents are for soccer in basketball and slinging country.
And this from a CPS Parent:
De La Salle HS has 781 students and their security consists of 4CPD-1 active and 3 retired plus one security guard-LOL!
Defund the police for your kid but not SDG's kid
SDG and son live 6 minutes from Harlan and 15 minutes from DLS. Bus rides away. But. I'm sure SDG has her son UBER'd to school and back, she can afford it on her multiple union salaries. So much for being against vouchers and school choice, huh SDG?
FYI: The CTU just gave $2M to the PAC.

Is the union still pushing for the lifting of it for at least some of the members?

Galen Caldwell - ha ha ha ha
I remember when he was a PO and he wanted to seize the role of Dept singer. He was singing the National Anthem and changed a word or two. Gary Schenkle (CO of the Academy) went ballistic. Galen was forever forbidden from singing for the CPD and quickly replaced with Kenyatta Gaines (who was seeking (at the time) inside, sweet off the street positions.
OSHA has no jurisdiction regarding the health and safety regarding public employees of a state. That is why we have IOSHA. It a federal constitutional issue.
