At least until the 15th of next month, when retirements tick up again:
- Over 250 officers were sworn into the Chicago Police Department, slightly less than the last class graduate in June.
Among 83 percent of the graduates are people of color and 32 percent are women. As the new officers begin their work in the city, a constant issue they face is tackling crime.
Over the weekend, CPD reports that 24 people were shot and one person was killed.
WGN is more concerned that everyone knows that the diversity numbers are up to snuff rather than the total number of officers, which continue to lag behind manpower strength three years ago and a far cry from the roaring 90s.
And most of these officers have already been on the street for months, finishing their cycles and getting their permanent assignments. BJ needed a photo op, so they "graduated" numerous classes all in one go.

Interesting that in the video at the link it only shows white officers graduating. That must be why they are bragging that “…among 83% of the graduates are people of color…” a phrase that makes absolutely no sense. They might as well have said “…among 100% of the graduates are black people.” (I really hate the POC nonsense. White is actually a color.

But the standards were lowered to accommodate these recent hires...Believe it or not, CPD used to have pretty high standards.
Back in the early 90's, there was a group hired on that was previously rejected as candidates for Chicago Police officer. There was a lawsuit which won and claimed there were irregularities in the selection process which translated into "A lot of bosses kids couldn't get hired on" and were rejected.
A new test was held and the results from the first test were set aside, and new interviews were scheduled. Many of the "rejected" were eventually hired on. The academy was busy in those days, and these recruits started almost immediately. There were disciplinary issues from the beginning, and several were fired before they graduated.
Academy discipline became lax and mayhem ensued. Several spars were issued including one of the recruits were discovered to be appearing for roll call, and then sleeping off the night before in his car on a daily basis. Another issue was a lack of discipline at the academy which went on unchecked for some reason. Cadets were heckling instructors and shooting spitballs during classes. Instructors were working in two shifts(early/late) to handle the large number of recruits in the academy at that time, many were working 12 hour shifts. Thats just the way it was. The OT was being paid and everyone was happy.
The infamous "spitball" class even had their badges rescinded in ceremonial fashion in the academy gymnasium. They ultimately did graduate but a month later than scheduled with little fanfare. As I recall an hour a day was added to their schedules for "gym" classes. The head of the academy was transferred in an unprecedented move at a later date. Today we have an Academy Alumni as Superintendent.
In the course of their careers as many are most likely honorably retired now, but there were a lot of "screw ups" Some were arrested in off duty incidents before their probation was up. Years later, more were arrested for burglary of drug houses while on duty and went on to serve prison sentences in jail. Another member of those recruits hooked up with the officers in the, at the time, ongoing "Austin Scandal" and went to prison. There is no telling how many were discharged after random drug testing.
These "rejects" and "Bosses kids" as they came to be known, were an issue from the get-go. A majority of them became good police officers and retired after having honorably served. Many of them were "misfits and screwballs" that deserved to not be hired. I assume that some of them might still be in prison. Some were boss's kids who had every effort to "save" their careers. Some succeeded and some didn't.
The point is...lowering the standards is dangerous. As I recall they have been lowered on at least two previous occasions. Some Cook County Sheriffs were hired a while back and their standards had to be relaxed. I wonder of anyone is tracking that data? Probably not. Most of what I know is memory based, some on Police talk which usually starts with "Hey, did U hear about So and So? and the rest is gleaned from the media on high profile cases which never mentioned their "notorious" attachment to the classes of "rejects" and "Boss's kids" which were hired on under a lowering standard. But, yet it happened.
These are certainly "Interesting Times" I often wonder if the current Academy is/would be hiding some of these incidents again to hire "the people who check all the right boxes" I spent some tours of duty working with some of those aforementioned people, some who just got fired, some who went to prison...History may yet again repeat itself. Stay grounded, Stay clean, Stay tuned.

Hollywood and Social media really destroyed young people's minds.

I remember I has to get a state ID (needed a picture ID) because I had a ticket and I was embarrassed to hand it to the guy when I first got to the academy.
I loved the news showing the graduation ceremony of new officers. The picture of badly the uniform looked on the female who waddled up & saluted (shi$$y salute btw) but even shittttier was the fact that she was 5 06 & 200+ her ass was almost as large as the comisky park bullet catcher. What happened to the power test?? You mean to tell me she could bench 90% of her weight?? I weep for the future of this great country

excellent post. great memory of the spitball class. I think that was the class right before or after me, but I was in the academy at the time.
I became a fan of Tucker Carlson long before his current fame when he wrote an article called D.C. Blues. It described the Washington D.C. police Dept. absolutely scraping the bottom of the barrel in the 80's I believe.

And just and aside I was from a police family. I, too, was rejected for the psych test. I got on, I did answer one question really weirdly and when we went over it 'again' I answered differently. But it was like one weird question so I don't know. It wasn't like ai said I enjoy killing small marsupials and pissing the bed. Anyway I maxed out on this job, worked in the field my entire career, never screed over another copper, put a whole lot of bad guys in jail, and just did a solid job. Never got in trouble, never did anything too stupid. I am proud of what I did and appreciate the job.

Most merit are whites. It ahs always been this way. Maybe that changed recently, but historically that has been the case (and the triple merit become big boss nonsense I am not sure about)

First of all the department is at least 50% white so they should receive the majority of Merit promotions.
Secondly, of the LTs from the new list only one white has been promoted by merit. If you make Merit Lt you have a 95% chance of being a Commander.

Just as embezzlers use number math to deceive, knucklheads/politicians use word math to the same purpose.
If she has a big mouth and a short fuse, is 90 lbs and 5 feet tall she is going to get some officers hurt and in trouble. And in the end she still won’t be able to prove she can do the job or be able to do the job
