RIP Officer

This happened in 2013:

  • City officials presented the top awards for extraordinary bravery to Chicago police officers and firefighters Tuesday morning at a ceremony at City Hall.

WBBM Newsradio [...] reports, the city's Carter Harrison Award was presented to Police Officers Jeffrey Friedlieb and Ruben Del Valle, who shot and pursued a drug suspect, after he shot them.

Friedlieb managed to shoot the suspect after both officers had been shot in the head.

"After I got shot, I went down, and luckily I was still conscious, so I was able to fire back, and wound the offender," he said.

Unfortunately, the doctors couldn't remove the bullet from Officer Friedlieb's head, and he suffered from continual headaches, loss of motor skills, pain and balance issues. The shooting may have also triggered/exacerbated PTSD after a stint with the Marines in Iraq participation in numerous engagements.

After winning the Department's highest award, Officer Friedlieb returned to duty, but was on Duty Disability and passed this weekend by his own hand following a decade of fighting his injuries. We can't even imagine his struggles. Deepest sympathies to his family, friends and co-workers.

RIP Officer.

Officer Friedlieb was a true hero. His father Jeffrey Sr. served the CPD for over 35 years. Outsiders often do not understand the generational commitment to public service that is made for them. Our hearts and prayers to go out to this family. Godspeed.

I worked with Jeff a handful of times when he was a new officer in 011. He had a great attitude and was eager to learn. I was also working the night he was shot. I'll never forget the radio transmission of him saying he was shot, the 10-1 that ensued, and all the emotions that go along with brother officers in the worst of situations. I remember the systematic search of the area into the wee morning hours on a brutally hot and humid night. Jeff served his nation and his city with bravery and courage. May God rest your soul Jeff, and may the demons that haunted you be forever banished to hell.

I worked the watch in 011 the night Jeff and his partner were shot. I was amazed that Jeff, although hit in the head, was able to chase down and shoot the offender. What an unbelievable, never give up, warrior mindset!

Jeff was a true hero, and his death should be considered by the Department as in the line of duty. If anyone is due a honors funeral, it is Jeff. But for him being shot that night, he'd be alive today. Try as he might, he couldn't overcome the pain and anguish that bullet in his head caused him on a daily basis. He just wasn't the same after being shot, either physically or mentally. I know he was tormented as a result of his injury, and that he suffered intense migraines on a daily basis. Despite this, he persisted and did the best he could. Unfortunately, medicine couldn't get the bullet out of his head, and he had to suffer. And he knew he was going to suffer like that for the rest of his life. How much can one man take?

RIP Jeff. Although I never told you, I viewed you as nothing but a hero.

He deserved way better.

I want the department and all its leadership to be reminded of that. When they make decisions based only on optics and beurocratic policy rather than what is truth and what is right. They don't want to risk their rank, but remember what Jeff risked, and the conclusion a few days ago.

He deserved way better.

Ald. Nicole Lee (11th) is demonising the mob of scholars??? Ald playing Good Cop/Bad Cop.?

When you say it's a "citywide issue" it comes off as being a victim and its not your fault. Like since it happens everywhere accept it there's nothing you can do about it right?

Leticia said...

"All four (streets) here were blocked off by cars, young adults, grown adults," she said. "There was a lot of people as audience."

Police say responding officers were clearing a crowd that was gathering in the 3500 block of South Ashland Avenue when a person threw an object onto a marked squad car, causing damage to the front windshield.

Ald. Nicole Lee (11th) released the following statement about the incident:

I am aware of what happened overnight at 35th and Ashland in the early hours this morning and have been in contact with the 9th District about the incident. I'm grateful to the officers who responded and were ultimately able to move those gathered along despite the fact that a police vehicle was damaged in the process. This is a citywide issue that we must find real solutions for and I am committed to having meaningful conversations with my colleagues and other government entities about how we can keep people from participating in these unsafe and disruptive actions.

So very true - I agree with you.

My heart is breaking for this young man. Why did this rotten Fkg department let him live and die in such torture?

Jeff earned his wings. Yet it was given to that deputy.

The best way to honor Jeff, is to show the city that we stand with Jeff at visitation and at his funeral, should the family permit us. Blue shirts for blocks all in Jeff's honor. If the white shirts show, show them respect. God keep you Jeff, you were a hell of a p.o. in 011, and no one can deny that. Ruben, you had a hell of a partner who is now watching over all of us. Jeff make sure you say hi to Mac and flash, 011 district rangers like you, they will show you the way brother.

Funny how the connected will be memorialized short of full honors.
