Fireworks at Ballpark (UPDATE)

Shooting at Comiskey US Cellular Guaranteed Rate Sox Park last night:

  • A shooting injured two women in the outfield seating area at Guaranteed Rate Field during Friday night’s White Sox game, Chicago police reported.

A police spokesperson on social media said late Friday that the department would soon provide information on a “shooting incident,” and a news release was made available early Saturday.

This is probably not true:

  • A statement from the White Sox said it was unclear whether the bullets were fired from inside or outside the park.

You ever think about shooting into what is essentially a giant bowl? You have to shoot across a parking lot, over a wall, then have the bullet drop. Given that there's at least one witness who heard a pop, it would seem a safe bet that someone got a gun in past security. But maybe we're wrong.

MLB and the White Sox can't be happy with a "lax security" story getting out there or the old ball park will become a shooting gallery for ne'er-do-wells who know how Swiss-cheesy security is and what's left of the Sox fan base fades away.

UPDATE: this is a stretch...but the media is going to roll with it:

  • A bullet that struck two women at a Chicago White Sox game on Friday evening may have landed inside the ballpark after being fired about a mile away.

That’s the current line of thinking among Chicago cops tasked with investigating the incident, which unfolded a little before 7:30 p.m. as the Sox were blistered by the Oakland Athletics.

The CWB report even has an alleged photo of the bullet. Looks to be 9mm or smaller, but by golly, the Department tracked down a "shotspotter" incident a mile away and is going to claim it came from there.

Any physics majors reading? We know a 9mm can travel upwards of two miles in optimal conditions, but in thick, humid air, 600 feet above sea level, launched at what angle to clear a wall that's four or five stories high.....

Color us skeptical.

It’s time for us to move forward as a department. Can we get rid of that worthless space holder and sorry excuse of a man who disrespects women, sickly looking Fred Waller and his twice married to Aunt Ester wig wearing ex girlfriend of should’ve been arrested from 007 Carothers. Yuck to that triangle. What a waste of tax payers money. And take that bafoon Bill Bradley, I’ll promote my best friend who married the side chick after a domestic in an effort to piss of the ex wife for clowning that ugly woman at the hospital when we he had a heart attack. I know that’s a lot. But know that it’s time for us to move on. It sickens me everytime I see them out for a photo opp. And how come his literal clown for a wife Michelle keeps posting pictures on public social media for attention and I guess bragging rights, of stuff he should be getting a CR# for. She posted pictures of her with police credentials as a retired police officer during NASCAR and pictures of him driving her around in his company car on vacation. I hate to be a squealer but it’s time for the dog and pony show to go. Take illiterate Senora Ben with you and her midget. He also promoted the ex’s of bosses NF and YW. I wonder does SC know her husband had him promote his ex. The same ex YW who was with every boss back in the day trying to stop his career. Wait until she finds out. I hope she finally leaves that mf. You are going to get half of that pension. Drop him. NF is about to get half of get down Eddie’s pension to. Bill take some that money and get her hair done. Yet another reason to allow active and retired Cops to be armed while in the ballpark. If that was a mass shooter incident, only an off duty Copper attending the game would have a chance to take out the offender before much more damage was done.

Lax security and a terrible response by Sox stadium management (coupled with non-existent training for CPD to handle something of this magnitude). They posted a response on the billboard saying that the concert will be cancelled due to "technical issues". The whole thing looked like a scene out of a "Naked Gun" movie.
This along with the bogus shots fired at the United Center has made Chicago into a punchline and word has got out that this city is ill prepared for safely managing large events. If there was ever a real active shooter incident in a Chicago sports venue it would be horrific.

Heard the radio transmission on 16th & 17th District scanner. Absolute bull shit that she got on the radio saying that the 006th District had too many things going on to assist a police officer who was there to arrest a robbery offender. Comical Ali from The CDC (Center for Dis-information Communications) says there are no American troops in Baghdad and the shooter was outside the park a mile away from here I am not afraid and you shouldn't be either.

The 42-year-old was listed in fair condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center, while the 26-year-old declined treatment. There was no immediate indication if the resilient 26-year-old rubbed dirt on it.

Some spectators told ABC7 that the gunfire seemed to result from an argument between two men. However, in a statement issued after the game, the host team said "White Sox security confirms that this incident did not involve an altercation of any kind" a

OT....

LISTEN: 5241-Boy went over the air for a man wanted for a robbery.

699 (6th district lieutenant) immediately declined the request for assistance because there was apparently too much going on.

Eventually, the detective was able to apprehend the wanted robbery offender.

5241, a sergeant for Area 2 detectives, asks for clarification on whether 699 declined a request for assistance to apprehend a robbery offender.

The dispatcher essentially confirms this for him where 5241 (sarcastically) thanks 699 for the help and 699 snarkly says you're welcome.

Car 42 then says to keep this off the air and says she will contact 5241.

This is the state of Chicago Police "leadership."

A robbery offender is wanted, the lieutenant refuses to help with catching him and with helping the officer trying to make the arrest.

It's embarrassing.

"Off topic , but what’s up with Lt. Shenetta Durham refusing to send an assist car to assist beat 5241 -B who was going to arrest a robbery offender at the 87th St Red Line station?"

Way to completely lie/misrepresent what actually happened.

-52whatever goes over the air talking about a known robbery offender being monitored on camera. He gives no indication that one of his team is going to respond (so at this point, its no different than anyone saying they see something, info for the police...something that we don't have cars to respond to).
-699 indicates that we don't have people to send to that and because of the 2 gang funerals and some other trouble brewing at Foster Park, so that he's gotta use his team.
-A minute or so later, 5241b(?), a presumed member of the team, who is 99, indicates that he is arriving at the location and spots the individual and plans to put a stop on the offender and requests an assist
-699 doesn't say anything, because, obviously, now the situation is different and there is a member of the team actually arriving/there trying to make a stop. A beat car goes and assists, now that there is an actual request to assist.
-524whatever then gets mouthy over the air, incredibly unprofessional directly to 699, sarcastic and dramatic. 699 remains professional, because she IS.
-524whatever continues his rant, with other P.O.s try to interrupt him on the radio because they could obviously tell he has lost his mind. In steps Car 42 who shuts the convo/one sided rant down, and says she will call the parties involved.

This is ALL on 524whatever unit for not properly communicating that he has a 99 car who was actually enroute (minutes away) and needed an assist because he was 99 VERSUS giving info on someone he was watching and wanted everyone to drop everything in one of the busiest districts in the city to immediately go get someone for him. Had he actually communicated properly, guarantee you 699 wouldn't have said anything.

The only BS here is your take on this situation. Armed robbery offender? Yeah 006 has of lot of them, take a number. You want help, learn some radio etiquette. Coordinate. Everyone who I talked to about this situation afterwards interpreted it the same way I did.

Chances are you the knucklehead involved in this. I said to my partner "bet this guy posts on the blog tonight".

C'mon now.

Ballistics may not be your cup of tea, however, even basic common sense, plus a bit of experience with firearms, will lead you to be able to sus this out.

1. What goes up, must come down. Even a small, yet weighty, object propelled at 1,000+ fps.

2. An examination of this/these recovered object(s) will determine if each is substantially unaltered, other than the expected groving of the barrel rifling.

3. If you were to insist upon a vigorous math physics calculation, which will be, absent the actual firearm, cartridge, loading, etc., read a book. Or three.

4. The geometry + effect of gravity + really shitty luck of those impacted by this = if you knucklehead assholes are gonna squeeze off rounds like fireworks, point the fucking pistol straight up, not at any angle less than straight fucking up. Like hands up. Or straight down, like your dicks hang when limp, preferably with a slab of concrete beneath your feet.

Physics major here, as requested. A handgun bullet fired mostly up into the air can achieve 10,000 ft (or more) altitude easily, which is enough to make it over the wall.

Hot and humid air has less resistance than cold and dry air, because it's less dense. High humidity is why air pressure drops when there are storms around. The effect on a trajectory is pretty negligible, though, unless you're worried about precision shooting (which I doubt this incident was).

80° elevation (10° from vertical) would be about right to make a handgun bullet land a mile away. Obviously it wasn't an aimed shot. Bullets fired into the air have to come down somewhere. Terminal velocity would be about 150 ft/sec to 200 ft/sec, less deadly than straight from the muzzle, but I wouldn't want to get hit by one.

On a slightly different topic, anyone not wearing ear protection who thought they maybe heard a "pop" inside the ballpark clearly didn't hear a gunshot. Gunshots are LOUD.

Another possibility?

CWB posted a video of that section of stands where one was shot and a second hit a graze wound. Take a screen shot of that video, zoom in, and see that, despite the very hot temperatures, one person seated behind the victims is wearing a zipped-up, dark hoodie covering his whole head! And seconds after the shooting, said person is talked to in his ear by a F/2 next to him while others are huddling over the victims. Reminds me of how they zeroed in on the Boston Marathon bomber calming walking away while everyone else looked in a panic.

Also, not a ballistics expert but the odds of a handgun-sized bullet being fired in the air from a mile away, falling into the stadium, wounding one leg and grazing another's stomach, seems pretty improbable.

I worked that gig. 2 hours of driving that shit highway, which was shit even before this summers work, during rush hour. Then you have to park at furthest parking lot where that cheap bastard who owns the Sox makes you pay the city tax for parking.

Then the long walk. Then the sweaty roll call where you get a shit assignment because you dont have the clout to get a sitting post. And then you work the gates until you get all the people in, after you have to check your gun in before you work the park itself. They freak out if the catch you sitting, or even leaning, and after 5 or 6 hours of that you remember just how much you hate fucking baseball.

And theres always a chance you get in the middle of a bunch of drunken Jagoffs, in the bleachers especially. We had a nosy, bimbo, PO that they made a supervisor because of her clout who was a real pain in the ass. Overall it just wasn't a good gig. When you factor in the 3 hours of driving, the gas, the food you have to buy, the Govt. stealing 1/3rd from tax's? Then what are you making?

But I think its fairly hard to get a gun thru, tho I could think of a few ways. Entry scanning is pretty good tho not on airport level. Its still pretty good but if anyone did actually have a gun and start shooting security would be left holding their cocks.
