City Lawsuit

When we first heard this, we were cynically amused that BJ is trying to distract from his so-far useless administration's first one-hundred days:

  • Mayor Brandon Johnson announced today that the City has filed a civil lawsuit against Kia America, Inc., Kia Corporation, Hyundai Motor America, and Hyundai Motor Company for their failure to include industry-standard engine immobilizers in multiple models of their vehicles, resulting in a steep rise in vehicle thefts, reckless driving, property damage, and a wide array of related violent crimes in Chicago.

The complaint, which was filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, alleges that Kia and Hyundai failed to equip their U.S. cars, sold between 2011 and 2022, with vital anti-theft technology, which almost all other car manufacturers made a standard feature over a decade ago and which Kia and Hyundai include in their vehicles sold outside of the country. The Complaint alleges that Kia and Hyundai deceptively assured consumers that these vehicles possessed “advanced” safety features, despite knowing about this critical defect and its consequences.

So the basis is deceptive advertising? That Kia and Hyundai didn't include a non-required piece of equipment that didn't affect safety at all? How many Kias/Hyundais does the city own? Oh, they're trying to recover costs from having to...enforce the law? What?

That sounds like a non-starter we told ourselves.....until we read this:

  • Kia and Hyundai have agreed to a class-action lawsuit settlement worth about $200 million over claims that many of the Korean automakers' cars are far too vulnerable to theft, according to lawyers for the companies and the owners.

The settlement covers some 9 million owners of Hyundai or Kia vehicles made between 2011 and 2022 and have a traditional "insert-and-turn" steel key ignition system, lawyers for the owners said in a press release on Thursday.

Compensation to owners includes up to $145 million in out-of-pocket losses that will be distributed to people who had their vehicles stolen. Affected owners can be reimbursed up to $6,125 for total loss of vehicles, and up to $3,375 for damages to the vehicle and personal property, as well as insurance-related expenses.

Kia and Hyundai were trying to settle? For $200 million? Again, for a non-required piece of equipment that didn't cause a single crash, injury or fatality by its non-inclusion. We're not talking about design flaws, tearing seat belts or Pinto gas tanks.

So now we don't know if BJ is some kind of legal savant or what. But oh no! A judge has refused to approve the settlement:

  • The proposed settlement would offer vehicle owners cash payments for theft-related damage and a voluntary recall to update theft-protection software. But U.S. District Judge James Selna raised concerns about the process for calculating payments and the adequacy of the software update in preventing future thefts.

As usual, the only ones getting rich are the lawyers.

The damned Kia and Hyundai cars are being stolen in huge numbers every day in my city. Gangs of yutes of unknown ancestry are roaming the city and stealing multiple Kias every day and night. They are literally having contests tosee who can steal the most cars in one day.

There are Youtube videos showing them how to do it.

So basicslly you're making it too easy for the criminal so we have a right to sue you.

Don’t you just love how these Marxists think! “First we get the money”. So don’t catch the persons that are stealing the cars and put them in jail so they can’t steal cars while incarcerated. Let’s go after the car manufactures. Let’s go after the gun manufactures. The list goes on. Johnson is not going to stop any crime he has done nothing in the last 100 days. He hasn’t even said, hey stop killing each other!! He’s playing classic from the Democrat songbook. File the lawsuit, get some money which will disappear in the city funds. Keep attorneys happy with work so they can make donations to the Party. I know the US Congress is busy with the Biden crime family, but they could cut off the federal aid to problem cities like Chicago where the money keeps disappearing and problems are not solved.

City Lawyers have time to go after Kia/Hyundai with such a Bullshit Lawsuit and but don't go after offenders trying to get away with frivolous lawsuits here? Sounds like all BJ wants is a GHETTO Jackpot! Funny coming from a guy who couldn't pay his bills. Maybe the law abiding citizens should start suing the city as robbery/burglary/battery victims..city didn't provide enough protection..isn't that kinda close to the same kind of stupid thinking?? BJ is so fucking clueless. I guess he is running our of City money to give free pizza and burgers away to the south and west side honor students.

Let me get this right, BJ is suing because his current and former (I mean dropout) CPS students decide to steal cars and in some cases by force...even death. Does the idiotic Mayor know that most of the vehicles are taken because lazy people leave their cars unattended, running, with keys inside?? Or filling up their gas tanks, making deliveries, or just sitting in a car?? How would anti theft security systems make any difference in these cases? BJ your a moron and another embarrassment to the City.

“despite knowing about this critical defect and its consequences.”
The critical defect is the young thieving residents and the lack of enforcing any semblance of law which results in emboldening the young residents and their thirst for violence and Jordan Brand footwear.

Rightfully so, Kia and Hyundai did a poss poor job building those vehicles. Car thefts are tying up all of our resources.

Just another "Hey!!! Look over here, instead of at what's really happening in the streets" maneuver.

The last thing they want is to hold a major Democrat voting bloc, criminal gang bagers, accountable.

If the Democrats, who hold the supermajority in the state, really wanted to make a difference they would change the laws so that juveniles committing such crimes are treated as adults and put in prison until they're 40 years old. Then all this crap would come to a swift end.

but that's hard, and not politically expedient what's easier is to just commit a Jesse Jackson and shake down the manufacturer for a few hundred million.

this kind of retarded thinking is precisely why I stopped going into the city for years with my Kia, because as a white male if I had to shoot pookie to protect myself or my stuff, I would have been the 'bad' guy....

so I didn't take any business in the city, I didn't spend any money in the city, I told everybody I knew to stay out of the city and when things got bad enough we packed up our houses and all of our treasure and moved out of the suburbs and left this festering boil of a once-great state

it's nice to be in a red state, where they hold criminals accountable and don't piss away tons of money on useless crap, it did cost us quite a bit in commissions, moving costs, transfer taxes and all the other nonsense to escape Illinois but ultimately, over the long term, it's going to be worth it. I recommend all conservatives leave the blue shit holes and hope that all the liberals stay in them to Stew in their own mess...

to those of you who are still stuck there for a few years, I wish you the best of luck. keep your Head on a swivel...

Car jacking started when the government insisted the ignition be bolted to the column on American cars.No longer could you peel and hot wire a car.Forcing one to take the car from the owner. My first bolted ignition was a 78 or 9 Malibu.

This can all be alleviated if they just make substantial contributions to BJ's campaign fund...

Chicago is actually late to the dance on this one. Other major cities where these vehicles are being stolen at alarming rates have already filed suits against the automakers.

Still can't fathom suing manufacturer for probability of theft of its manufactured item.

Rather than prosecute the car-thief criminal, Chicago and other Blue Democrat cities are suing the car manufacturer, in a bizarre twist of "if you didn't make the car, it won't get stolen".

Why they don't try to steal those Kias or Hyundais in Dupage County ? Straight steal there is minimum 5 years, while in Crook County you will get max 12 months of probation.

No, not really.

Car jackings was predicted way back when they made the keys with microchips or whatever. They did not start in 78 or 79.
