- In a move that could lead to his first labor dispute since taking office, Mayor Brandon Johnson will seek to split up a proposed new contract with the Chicago police union into two City Council votes, an unusual bid to quash a ruling allowing private disciplinary hearings for officers.
It's not "private." It's what every other union in the City has in their contracts.
- Johnson, a progressive who clashed with FOP leadership during the mayoral race, announced a pending contract last Friday that would provide a roughly 20% raise for officers. But he also said he was “deeply disappointed” with a decision reached by a labor arbitrator to grant officers the option to have some of the most serious disciplinary cases heard by an independent third party behind closed doors rather than publicly before the Chicago Police Board.
Gee....an independent arbitrator versus a board hand-picked by the mayor and beholden to the politics of the mayor in a political town.
The City wants the Police held to an impossible standard that no one could possibly meet day-in-and-day-out, 100% of the time, expecting perfection from human beings. We agree that there should be standards, but also that Police should be granted the same Rights as any other city worker. The "oversight" coming out of four or more boards, bureaus and "accountability" groups has hamstrung the Department to the point we cannot even take the enforcement actions we did from just a decade ago without risking lawsuits, suspensions, continued employment and even prison time.
This is going to end up in court.

When these factors favor against the city they will do whatever it takes to win. Tell arbitrator Ben he has no authority when the city and FOP both agreed to him. We have to let spree robbers get away almost on a nightly basis, this shows the current state of affairs in the department. For a dept with our size and budget we don’t even have the tools critical for apprehending them. We are out there playing whackamole with these robbers, it’s ridiculous.
Maybe some of the 400 officers working his detail should bite instead of just licking & ask him if he could live by the same standards? Your department will never be cohesive until the members decide their minuscule desires don’t trump the needs of the dept. What I mean is band together 12,000 voices are heard much much louder than 50 different smaller groups just trying to get theirs. If it’s not a general order & you can grieve any & EVERY single stupid move grieve it. I know of a smaller police dept. West of Shitcago that had 40 something sworn & the village board didn’t know there were over 100 grievances by the FOP. The board told the chief to retire or be fired. Would that happen in Shitcago???? You will never know until you try. Only do exactly what is expected, no more food runs for a Lt. No more extra anything until you get what you want. Also, most suburban towns pay a hell of a lot more maybe when BJ (the mayor not the act) doesn’t have 400 officers protecting him because they are in the suburbs driving nicer vehicles & better equipment. This is not what the politicians, aka the city, want.
Their version of a 'standard' is whatever benefits them. Period.
Were the actual 100% perfect to be the standard, by the book perfect, from the police, the prosection, and the courts, the construction of prisons would rival any building boom in history, the budgets of the state would explode with the costs therein, and the populations of certain areas would dwindle, not at all due to white flight.
Why, these now purged of miscreants areas might very well attract renters and buyers alike, instead of violently repulse them.

The CTU's contract expires this June. So the contract Lori gave them in 2020 is set to expire, while we still argue over one that expired back in 2017. So now JCat and Johnson want to extend this agreement through 2027 so we don't demand the same raise that Johnson is sure to give the teachers (I'm guessing 25% to 30% over 4 years), and neither of them has to negotiate another contract for the duration of their reigns. Now, moving forward, the City can point to "past practice" and demand 10-year contracts from us moving forward.

LeClaire Courts was a CHA project built about 50 years ago. CHA let it decay and fall into disrepair and then razed all the building to the ground. The water and sewage, electricity still has to be there but no tent base camp here. No-no-no this spot is for glorious PR stories about urban farms and government run grocery stores.
With the property already pwned by CHA and zoned for residential and all the utilities already in place and since the tent base camps are only temporary or so we are told. why is money being wasted at places like Brighton Park zoned for industrial use?

In this " union town" the police have never had anything close to the same rights as other city employees. None of the labor unions or the teacher's union have ever supported the police, in the beginning to even unionize, and then to get what the others call a " fair contract". Do you think the civilian workers or the teachers would have worked in buildings that the police were forced to work in? The homeless have been allowed to sleep in station houses for decades, which made the working conditions very bad. No security for the officers in their own house. I am totally surprised that this has not led to tragedy. Recall a police officer killed in the parking lot of the old 007 District? It never should have happened. The city administration does not care about you and the gold stars do nothing to help you, yet you still go out and buy tickets for their BS parties. Boycott all of them, period. I read that some police officers go on about how a double merit hack is such a nice person. Boycott all of them.Demand what other union workers get

This can be changed by the city alderman in one afternoon. Now, these civilian board and commission members who are paid $1000 a month, want more, much more. They claim they are working 80 hours a week along with their regular jobs. You knew this was going to happen. How in the hell can the city let totally unprepared and untrained and in many cases uneducated civilians write the orders and policies and pick the superintendent which should have been picked by the Chiefs association. Now, the CPD is stuck with a total merit promotee who just about came in last on the lieutenant's exam. What do you think the result of that will be? No cop in their right mind would do anything proactive when it could easily get you fired or a long suspension or arrested for the slightest perceived mistake, real or perceived that is by the woke cop haters on these commissions. The next think you might see is these commissions and panels selecting exempt promotions. There will be no end to it.

It has been a long time since I was involved in contracts and labor law, but as I recall, if the city signs off on a contract, interest arbitration, it goes to the city alderman for their approval vote. If they reject the contract then it can go to circuit court where the judge usually approves these. But, that said,we are in corrupt Cook County and anything can happen. Lay back, answer you calls, write you paper, do nothing proactive, no foot chases or vehicle chases, no stopping people on the street. Don't be a fool. And, for those young cops who think that if they follow the law, policies and orders they will be ok, take this from someone who has been around for along time. No you will not be OK as it all comes down to an arbitrary decision by the powers which are not in your corner, especially if what you did raises a stink with the liberals and the media. They have to go through The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability first and they forward their three picks to the mayor to choose from. So true. I was a member of the Teamsters and Steelworkers Unions before winning the lotto and getting on this job, those previous jobs paid well but were backbreaking, monotonous work. Most kids on the job now have no clue what real life is because they were raised with the everyone gets a trophy no matter how bad you suck method, they are too confident without having a reason to be confident. Real life will be a rude awakening for them. Don’t fret though, the old timers that were part of the Greatest Generation said the same thing about us Babyboomers.
