Hiring Standards?
First we're hearing of this one:

I’m surprised the media or the blog haven’t caught wind of the homicide that took [place] in 009. Two female POs did a terrible job on viewing a shooting, m/1 pops a few rounds in his ladies head and they run out the store like cowards. Not only did they run out of the store, it took them approx. two minutes post shooting for them to even unholster their weapons. BWC is a complete shit show. This is the BS that some of these officers are bringing to the table. Watch who you work with! If it wasn’t for the sat team who showed up, that offender would be in the wind. They ended up getting charges approved for murder with the help of A1 dicks. Great job all around, minus the two POs. Heard COPA already filed a CR against them for cowardice and failure to intervene.
Is this the pawn shop shooting or something else?
The Department has fired people for this in the past, but those might have been PPO's.

Definitely the pawn shop killing, watched the BWC and the 2 female cops not only sprinted out of the Pawn Shop when shots were fired, but pushed employees out of the way. One of the employees even asked the 2 female POs why don't you have your guns out? Thankfully LB and CST guys showed up, or God knows what else would have happened after the offender came outside armed. Absolute embarrassment. But it's not cowardice it's tactical retreating I thought since that's what is taught at academy now, time distance shielding and all that.
Not the first time officers have shown cowardice during a on view shooting or use of force incident.

Does anyone know what G.O. covers this? The Dept said it was too much money to buy replacement helmets for all the old ones. Good looking out for the CPD Mayor. Where is all that Democrat Convention money being spend on? Not public safety.
Isn’t cowardice an IAD investigated beef? Never heard of COPA giving a fuck about cowardly coppers. Have witnessed CRs initiated by patrol supervisors, never COPA.

From your described story. COPA wouldn’t be involved unless they fired their weapons or used questionable force. The crime would be handled by the dicks and someone would have to notify IAD of inaction. No doubt it happened nowadays and it used to happen in the past but it was a IAD issue if someone made the accusation for cowardice. Unless something has changed I don’t see it as a COPA issue.
The Uvalde Police Department should hire them.

I agree with the other poster. It was a domestic murder, known offender on scene, getting charges wasn’t that hard. Officers are not bullet proof. Officers couldn’t spray the place. There were employees everywhere. Officer’s safety and self-preservation first.

I'll play the devil's advocate on this one. I'm no fan of the department's chain of command and many dumb blue shirts but I can't say that the failure of those two officers is due to hiring. I worked we cowards 20 years ago and heard stories of same, nothing new. But definitely in the last 8 years the department has produced strange individuals. Not defending those two but given the environment we live in it was probably best they ran out. Why? Because they could have become victims themselves!!!!! But definitely watch what you do, not everyone is cut out to be the police.

I'm about 99% certain that if the Dept issued you equipment and said equipment is failing, it is incumbent upon the Dept to replace said equipment. Only hires after a certain date were required to purchase their own helmets and responsible for its upkeep.

They both have time on the job (8-12 years), they wanted no part in being there. Even after the offender came out armed and ran away they didn’t even go to check on the victim for approx 10 min after. Even then, just kind of stood around waiting to be told what to do.
No actions on contact, no battle drill 1A, poor hiring, bad training… the two did what exactly they were hired to do. Hundreds of our teammates would’ve not done shit either.. plenty of BWC, POD and private video to prove that..
At least these officers had the sense not to stand in front of the bathroom door when bullets started coming through…could have been attending an officers funeral this week

I used to work for the cook county department of corrections. I know how these coppers feel. I had to call a 10-1 in lockup last year when a prisoner sat on the floor and refused to get up. I feared for my life, what if he stood up, what if my shoes were untied,what it he tried to talk to me. Just thinking about it is giving me ptsd. Better call off today and head down to the trailer park. Coors lite,smokes,and wall push ups is how i keep in shape. Cheers!

There is no law that forces an officer to risk their life to save anyone. That's just a fact the public needs to understand. Now, if they indeed ran over people getting out of the building , then they PUT people in harms way, that would be illegal one would hope. Regardless, not a good look, but the public has to understand, don't assume someone will save you....
As a former FTO I can confirm. 95% of my female PPO's would constantly record themselves in the squad car, on jobs, and in the station processing arrest paperwork. I know what you "tough" guys are thinking. If I were the FTO I would correct this behavior immediately. But the reality is there's nothing to be done about it. If an FTO asked her to put the phone away he'll be the one in trouble when she files a beef because she feels oppressed. God help you when she's black and you're a white FTO. That's the new department. I don't know how anyone would still would want to be an FTO. Even at the D-2 pay it's a mess. Enjoy the new normal CPD.
I believe a somewhat similar situation happened years ago in a supermarket on the east side although (when Cline was supt) although nobody was shot during that incident but if my memory serves me correctly one officer began struggling with an individual who was armed while two other officers ducked behind store displays and watched. Cline wanted to fire them for cowardice.

How about learn department procedures. ALL CR number are issued by COPA. When they get it they send the ones that are for IAD to them for investigation. This has been the procedure for years.
I wholeheartedly agree with other posters on here-
All of our training within the last 4 years has been about retreating, giving the offender time, distance and shielding to let him cool down. Remember- his life is precious too.
Those officers are not judge, jury, and executioner. You know damn well the ghetto rat activist would fall on these officers for taking drastic police action.

No it’s not a shame. They were directed to the rear bathroom by the screaming people in the pawn shop that he had a gun and just dragged a woman back there with him. The officer literally walked up to the center of the door and KNOCKED with gun still holstered !! Shits were fired and the girlfriend/hostage was now dead. The officers then ran away. Guns still holstered.
OT - it’s the suburbs, but it appears a group of 20 or so illegals raided the Jewel in Elmhurst yesterday. Broad daylight, even while regular folks were in the store shopping and just going about their day. Wonder if this is coordinated or they just "happen" to keep choosing grocery stores in supposedly nice areas…….stay safe out there.

The department has made new hires buy their own helmets for at least the last 10 or 11 years now. After the second round of looting in 2020 the memorial foundation bought and donated new riot helmets for CST and CRT.
First lets look at who trained them. Who spent their whole career at the Academy? oh never mind.....
Copa will take any complaint. You armchair quarterbackers obviously don't know that. Who ultimately handles an investigation is another thing.
I'm going to agree with a previous posters. Let them kill themselves, we will all be the better for it.

All the great veterans have been driven out by Chicago politicians. Someone should FOIA the officers who retired early starting in 2021 to present and before they were age 55 with 20 years or more. Then compare their award history to discipline history. You will see a very large number of officers that were extremely valuable to Chicago. Officers that never embarrassed the department and cost the city $ in civil litigation. These officers worked smart. Obviously they were doing something right. These are the officers the city desperately needs now. These officers being smart realized that the risk was no longer worth it and was only going to get worse. Lightfoot will go down in history as the most destructive mayor for law enforcement in America. Which only hurts the good people which we are experiencing right now. Not a cop. Perhaps these two lady-cops were fearful of using their guns on shooter, given current CPD regulations, media scrutiny, and WOKE agendas, knowing that a "cop shooting" would consequently ruin their personal lives in near-future. Not to say they were right to scamper away, but their gut-reaction was to scamper fast, even to push people away to get to door first.
Stories like this is why law-abiding folks no longer think cops will protect them if/when they are confronted by such situations. Poor woman who was murdered; the proffered "protection" was obviously of little practical value to her. So sad for her child/children. The CBFO is safe but very low rate. In my opinion they’re keeping the rate way too low. It just retreated .25% this quarter. It should be way above 3% by now. But if you’re retired and have a good amount of money in it, it’s the safest option with so much uncertainty this year. I’m getting around $16,000 a year in interest and I’m fine with that for now. We’ll see how 2024 goes but it’s not looking good. Lots of potential risks everywhere.

Do they want to be like the Policeman in Oak Lawn? Do they want to be charged like the guys from MAI driving to the Academy and confronting a armed offender? When the State in closing arguments stated the MAI guys on duty, should have kept driving and called the police. Do they want to be the next Eric Stillman.
Prior to COVID I got sent for us of force training. They had an offender step forward as he lifted his shirt and drew a gun. What they were teaching was for us to draw our gun as we were running/peddling backward. They said this the distance of our model of time-distance-shielding of our UOF training
I think that was a recruit and Harris. Or at least it sounds like a response from Harris. He still can't hit a whiffle ball.
The social workers didn’t show up so the officers retreated, just like we were taught in De-escalation training. Great job officers! You didn’t shoot the shithead and you got to go home at the end of the tour. Almost a perfect training scenario.

The days of the hard charging Alpha-type warrior police officer is long over. Now the mantra is DEESCALATION.
Officers are micromanaged and ultracriticized for any action they take. Any use of force is potentially career ending.
Remember the officer that shot the armed 13 year old gangbanger in the alley in the middle of the night? He is before the police board facing termination.
There are other officers that have been involved in justifiable shootings that are facing termination or have been terminated.
It is not solely the officers problem. It is the recruiting and training system that takes the take-charge attitude out of the police.

I know 99% of your accumulated lifetime writing has been via social media and texting, but let’s try that again. Only this time in English please.
A tactical retreat is exactly that, retreating tactfully… not running out pushing people away and standing outside on the sidewalk not holding the doorway. They stood on the sidewalk far from the door. CST is who showed up and posted on the door with their guns out. Big difference to anyone defending them. Just two job dodging POs who aren’t made for this.
What should they have done? Run in toward the back of the store where an armed offender is waiting to shoot them dead as well? A tactical retreat is not cowardice in this day and age of policing. It’s a smart move. Changing locations to get away from gunfire while taking a minute to think through your best option is what a thinking cop should do. We don’t get paid to allow someone to execute us do we? Stop, think, don’t try to be a hero! If they would have run into the unknown there would be three innocent people dead.
Officers fuck these Monday night quarterbacks! The pawnshop has a buzzer on the door. Everyone must be buzzed in and out. It was a death trap either way.
Hiring issues.
Some individuals are not cut for this job because of their mental state / attitudes. These aspects are beyond training and these individuals should have never been hired to begin with.
Every generation has these types. That's why we have some scandals such as Abbate, Van Dyke, and Watts.
If it's not DEI, it's "who you know" why they were hired to begin with. I had several classmates who were sons and daughters of Lts, Sgts, and Dets which came on the job young and not the best candidates but were all huted anyway. Years later, these same individuals have all left because they were not just cut for this job.
A, perhaps, missing factor:
Cop has firearm.
Shithead has firearm.
Citizen/resident has firearm.
Of the above, which has greatest/most effective impediments on using firearm?
Which has least?

There is a big difference between being passed and actually passing a real standard.
I haven’t seen the video but based on what SCC posted I don’t understand the comments defending these two officers. Like it or not, this isn’t a normal job. Wearing the star means that one day you may actually have to take police action and take an armed offender into custody. Were there citizens or workers still in the pawn shop when these two ran out? Was there any attempt to contain or apprehend the offender or did these ladies just wait for the police to show up?

I haven’t seen the video. But, that’s the way the city wants us to police now. They’ve ingrained it in everyone that engaging is bad. It could cost the city money, cost the officer lawsuits, maybe even prison. The older officer think wtf, but think about the officer who shot Toledo and how they’re railroading him. He shot an offender that fired a gun, ran with a gun, then appeared to turn toward the officer with the gun. Officer shoots and then goes thru absolute hell for trying to do his job. So u have to ask yourself, would it have been better to just let him go? Just retreat? Don’t engage? Remember if u engage and anything at all goes wrong, you’re risking everything. If u don’t engage, well u don’t have anything to lose.
Why would they shoot him? Not one of the exempts are going to back them if something went wrong. What if an innocent caught a round. Then they’d be in a world of hurt right now with everyone 2nd guessing them. Plus, the “community” sure doesn’t have our backs. COPA is out to get us. The worst thing u could do is shoot someone in this climate. You’re almost guaranteed years of lawsuits and threatening to be fired and/or charged criminally. No thanks. They want us to deescalate, retreat, give them time.. u got it. Take all the time u want.
Those defending them, do you really think this? Is this who you would depend on to come back you up? What if you engaged him and they ran off? Think a little bit. Just because they're your friends doesn't make them good police.

A tactical retreat is not cowardice. They didn’t leave the scene. It’s okay to retreat, reassess and wait to develop a contact team which consist of four or more officers that will clear rooms. This was an active shooter incident and nowhere in the order are you required to run in.

As soon as the police got there, they should have cleared the store of all persons, safety first. Based on knowing the bad guy had a gun on the victim in the bathroom. Call for back up, take a covered stance and keep an eye on the bathroom door.

Anyone hear what happened on beat 2515 this past Sunday?
Call goes out for a domestic on Altgeld (5240 block, to be exact), and coppers arrive to on-view the offender still on-scene. Offender greets the officers, then shortly after that, offender turns on the officers and starts threatening bodily harm, makes physical contact with two officers while making threats, makes physical contact with a 3rd officer while also making threats, and the offender is allowed to walk away with no arrest and no charges.
Rumor is that a nearby citizen caught most or all of it on camera.
If you're working 025, be careful who you work with because if your fellow officers are going to let themselves be threatened and battered, what are they willing to let offenders do to YOU?

Some would say Bond funds, but prices decline in bonds as yields (interest) goes higher. Some folks (and peoples) may recall that the Chicago Blended Fixed Income (short term paper) yielded 5.875% back in 2006-08 or around that time.
You give me almost 6% yield on short term paper and I'd never buy stocks or stock funds again in my life.
O.T. The helmet I was issued in 1996 is falling apart. I was told our helmets are our now our property, not Department issued, and I have pay out of pocket to fix or buy a new one.
We had a bunch of helmets sitting on a shelf when I worked at ERPS. They came mostly from inventories after the districts did locker audits. Equipment and Supply did not want them back. They had a giant box full of retiree turned-in helmets in their office at HQ that they didnt know what to do with. A friend of mine retired in 2011 and they wanted his helmet and face shield. I retired in 2019 and they didn't even ask me for mine. You might be able to get a free used one from ERPS or E&S.

No there isn't a law, but if they pulled that move at a school shooting they would be in direct violation of General Orders. In an active shooter scenario in a school you are REQUIRED to enter and attempt to stop the shooter.
"The CBFO is safe but very low rate. In my opinion they’re keeping the rate way too low. It just retreated .25% this quarter. It should be way above 3% by now. But if you’re retired and have a good amount of money in it, it’s the safest option with so much uncertainty this year. I’m getting around $16,000 a year in interest and I’m fine with that for now. I was at work one day when a loud scuffle could be heard on the lower level, as a few of us moved towards it to see if our help was needed I recall one female, then PO working as a Commander’s secretary walking in that direction- when she heard the noise, she said “Aw, Hell no,” and retreated to her office. Good thing for merit promotions bc she got a bump to detective after that and after a hot second as a detective went right back in the office as a secretary. No thought to who may have been in need or her fellow officers, just herself & she has time on a the job, not to mention a meaningless merit promotion taken away from someone who may have actually wanted to do a bit of detective work before being a house mouse.

All of our training within the last 4 years has been about retreating, giving the offender time, distance and shielding to let him cool down. Remember- his life is precious too.

I personally know both of these officers and one has almost 18 years on this job and has been in a shooting where shot and killed an armed offender on the train a few years back. I would work with this officer anyday. One of the best people I’ve ever worked with. And she will make an excellent sergeant without a doubt. This is the results of our training. The officers upon learning of the threat should have had their guns out. That use to be an officers first thought now it’s their last. The women would have died regardless. He had the woman in a locked room and shot her. What happened after is the officers should have evacuated the store and should have taken cover and addressed the threat.

These are the same coppers who have no tactical awareness where the combat and danger threat is high as Iraq, Yemen or Afghanistan. How hard is it to train on your own time? How hard is it to learn from body camera footage and OIS shootings? There is a reason why the shitbag started the shooting against the officer(they believe they saw a weakness in the cop and/or situation). I worked with a ghetto trash officer, she never wanted to touch anyone(always stayed on her phone and earbuds on), she looked at me to initiate arrests and go physical, best believe she never was my partner again. Thankfully I have a partner who is a prior combat veteran and goes hands on every chance I HAVE to go. Do not pick a partner who is skidish, know your GO's/policies/UOF, and you'll be beating half the battle.

Cowards come in all shapes and sizes. For instance, a Sgt in my unit loves tell everyone that he made Sgt by score and fuck those who made it by merit. We'll call him Sgt Scary. Sgt Scary is a company man and he gets so angry when certain officers take time off. Sgt Scary once asked me why Officer X takes so much time off. I said I didn't know why even though I did. I heard he likes to talk about me behind my back too so if he wants to know, he can go ask Officer X himself. You see, Sgt Scary is very one way and he's worried what he might find out by checking on the well being of an officer under his command. If your Sgt talks shit about other officers on your watch when they're not around, he most certainly talks shit about you too. Promoted by score only carries so much weight. Sgt Scary can talk like he's a bad ass in roll call all he wants but that guy has worked in caps and units more than 75% of his career combined. Morale of the story is never trust any white or blue shirt who acts and talks like Sgt Scary.
The difference is I believe it one if the few pieces of equipment they ask for it back when you retire.

We can thank this whole thread to the day desk sergeant who is probably the biggest gossip guy around. Fucking little baby. I personally know both of these officers and one has almost 18 years on this job and has been in a shooting where shot and killed an armed offender on the train a few years back. I would work with this officer anyday. One of the best people I’ve ever worked with. And she will make an excellent sergeant without a doubt. A lot of Monday morning quarterbacks on this thread, Jaros please stop gossiping about coppers and complaining, nobody likes to hear it anymore. All you do is trash talk officers and cry. She filmed her infamous Tik Tok smash “The Westide is Poppin Y’all” during a ten-one. Stupid bitch ended up pulling a number on herself for making a TikTok on duty and while in uniform. Around 24 years ago a female merit detective from A2 was shopping in the Dominick's at 71st and Jeffrey with her unmarked chevy patrol car in the parking lot. A robbery in progress was taking place in the store. The store manager told the detective there was a robbery. She responded, 'Ima on mys lunch call 911" The manager did as directed. Responding units were able to arrest the offender. The store manager complained about the response he received from the merit detective. The 003 Tactical Lieutenant got a CR number for cowardice. This complaint mysteriously made its around the city on district fax machines. The detective eventually received a suspension for her actions since there was no denying this incident took place as every district had a copy of the complaint. Things have not changed less the fax machines.
