Shooting Issues

First off, if this isn't proof positive that these new radios suck balls, we don't know what is.

For you retirees, the City went to a digital encrypted system over the last two years On one hand, it made all civilian scanners useless, meaning gang bangers and tow truck operators couldn't listen in on stuff.

But when you key up, there's a really long delay for the encryption software to kick in (what we were told). It's' literally like two seconds where the old Sabers and even the Motorola's it was under a second. That's not good in a high-stress situation when you might be yelling for help, calling out directions, or letting everyone know about shots fired.

This incident with radio cross-talk and such was horrendous and led to aggravating exchanges with dispatchers. We have no idea how it would even be fixed without going back to the old radios.

Second, that interview about "deescalating" the firefight?

We realize Larritorious built his career on being the Department Use of Force Sexpert and has testified at court many times about it, but in a gunfight, the only "deescalation" that should be taking place is rounds downrange into the bad guy.

With this in mind can everybody practice some radio discipline. If there is a real event going on or about to happen, stay off the f'ing radio unless absolutely needed. If I had a nickel for every time some self important jacka$$ keyed up while something important was happening I could have retired last year

When I heard the Superintendent say they tried deescalating I thought that was really an odd thing to say. It’s seems like he is trying not to upset the liberal woke mindset as if we are apologizing ,as we did everything there was to do. We had no choice. It doesn’t work that way. If somebody points a gun at you, you shoot him before he shoots you. You don’t hesitate and think about deescalating. And if you have to think about it, it will be too late for you.

Kind of OT but in relation to the radios: I don’t understand the ridiculous long radio antennas. The short ones work just as good. Then I see a notice up in 004 saying that aftermarket radio antennas will fry the motherboard of the radio and if sent in to be repaired they’ll be able to tell that an aftermarket antenna was used and will automatically generate a CR number against the officer who the radio is assigned to. I’m no technology guy but is this possible? The notice is on a bulletin board outside the tact office if anyone cares to read it.

I retired last year, but it was clear the new radios are awful. Dispatchers were constantly yelling about bad radios & for officers to stop stepping all over one another. Every other transmission is cutting out. It’s a danger to officers & the public.

If you have never been in a fire fight, you have no idea how to react there is no way to de-escalate once the bullets start flying in your direction. The only way to de-escalate is to kill the offender, or at least injure him or her God willing mortally. The best thing for the superintendent to do would be to open a business, a gym or fitness facility because that is what he is good at as far as anything else he’s not why don’t we have a first deputy we don’t need one probably because we have Fred still drawing a salary and doing what for the money again what did he ever do?

Dispatchers were completely out of line in how they responded when they were informed of an officer down. They literally yelled/sassed back at the copper. Disgraceful police hating show. Remove them from dispatching or just fire them both. You don’t speak to coppers on the ground like that after they were just involved in a shootout with a criminal. You’re safe in your little area of work in an air conditioned room. You don’t get to react negatively. Control your emotions. Even if you want to sass the coppers you have to maintain control. You have no reason to be disrespectful or be defensive for not hearing the coppers. They told you clearly an officer was shot. You chose to ignore it and question is someone shot. You then act belligerent when the copper on scene dealing with a shot officer and a shot offender tells you “yes” a copper is shot after already telling you that information three times. You need to be fired or suspended.

It is not really an encryption problem per se. In order to encrypt they had to switch from analog format to digital which takes your voice and converts it to a digital format. This takes time to convert on the transmit side and also on the receive side thus giving you the delay. If you notice your partner talks into the radio but there is a slight delay before you hear it, that's the vocoder in the radios doing its thing. You will also notice it if you have 2 television sets on, with one in each format there is a very noticeable delay in the speech.

This is the issue. Motorola sold the City a bill of goods in order to build out a digital infrastructure. The federal government (I.e., FBI, Secret Service) had analog encryption for many years - it could have been done. And once again, coppers and firefighters are put at risk. Assholes at OEMC and PSA…

Short answer is yes. An antenna is designed to work with a specific transmitter and frequency.
I would not compromise my safety hooking up some untested antenna to my radio because it may damage the transmitter circuit or cause it to work at reduced power.

Stroke, use the regular fucking antenna or use a long stem. When you strokes go all rogue and use the Amazon short stem, you lose the regular one, rendering the radio useless for anyone else who doesn't have to be handjob. Literally zero reason not to use the factory antenna other than you think the small one looks cool. Surprise it doesn't.

Regarding radios and encryption -
Every time you key up, there is a conversation between the hardware. It goes something like this:
PO's radio: "Hey! I need to talk to you"
Dispatch radio: "Who are you?"
PO's radio: {sends serial number or something like it}
Dispatch radio: {checks database} "OK, You're legit. Here's a 256-digit encryption key."
PO's radio: {loads key, sends encrypted message} "Got it. is this good?"
Dispatch radio: "10-4. Proceed."
PO's radio: {Starts transmitting encrypted voice.}

If there is any problem with this exchange, we start over. Worse yet, if the 'Is this good?" message gets no response (due to misread key or other traffic making the message garbled, whatever) the PO's radio waits for up to a full second before retrying.

Unfortunately, The PO's radio does not buffer what the officer says during this exchange so everything prior to receiving the final 'Proceed' is lost.

There are a couple ways to fix this. Most, if not all, require changes to hardware -
1. Every radio uses the same encryption key every time. Not very secure but it reduces lag.
2. PO radios maintain a constant conversation with dispatch on a sub-channel so their encryption key key is constantly updated. Security is good, lag is nil but it's hell on the battery.
3. Encryption key is based on time, not device. PO's radio only has to listen (not transmit) on a sub-channel occasionally to ensure that it's internal clock matches the master. Reasonable security, lag is nil, battery drain only slightly elevated.

Improper antennas can kill radios.
https://youtu.be/nq0KqbIailk?si=cK4QrSnuhJdFrFTF&t=90
Nevermind the stress on the connectors from removing and reattaching the antenna 3x a day. Also the smaller antennas don't have the "Gain" which effects how much and where the radio wave is directed. This might be fine out in the open but if you go into a building or in a car where the radio might be lower to the ground and being surrounded with metal, could cause reception and transmission issues. Encryption does not cause enough of a delay to make any difference. Go to encrypted car to car with 2 radios and see how much of a delay you see. Chances are any delay people are seeing in the field are caused by the backend of the radio system. I would think that the city has multiple receive sites around and the system has to recognize which site has the best signal and puts that out over the air. I would suspect thats were any delay would be. It doesn't seem as long as people are trying to make it out to be.

“… if sent in to be repaired they’ll be able to tell that an aftermarket antenna was used and will automatically generate a CR number against the officer who the radio is assigned to.”

…………

Sounds like one of those lies told to kids to get them to comply. “Be good or Santa will put you on his naughty list and you’ll get a lump of coal.”

Could’ve done without the pissy response of “stable isn’t a condition” from the dispatcher. Can anybody point me to the G.O. or S.O. regarding what conditions to give to the dispatchers?

1/09/2024 12:40:00 AM

It’s in a general order. Stable is not a condition. GOOD, FAIR, SERIOUS, or CRITICAL condition. You can be stable in each one of those conditions. IE the offender is stable but in critical condition (offender was stabilized in critical condition). Stable means the vital signs are in normal range. I don’t know the order number off hand. I’ll look for it if no one else posts it in a couple days. When hospital staff tells you he’s in stable condition (which they do knowing it’s not a condition. Speculate as to the reason why. It’s usually the nurse that will say that because the Dr hasn’t evaluated a patient yet) politely ask “has the patient been stabilized in GOOD, FAIR, SERIOUS, or CRITICAL condition”? They’ll tell you one of those , or if you’re asking a nurse she/he may tell you the Dr has t see. The patient yet.

Our appearance does not command respect. I am embarrassed by the way that a great many of you wear the uniform. I realize that many come from a me-me-me generation. Get over it. Shave. Cut your hair. Get in shape. The inspectors are not the problem…they are the solution.

We are aware that the dispatcher was asking what stable meant because THEY have to contact the hospital and advise what was coming in by an overly antsy PO that just HAD to transport…. When they call the hospital, the hospital needs to know what team to prep, what to get ready for, how to respond, equip, etc. This is why the ambulances stabilize as much as they can and advise the hospital what’s coming in so they can be ready and take over. If dispatch calls the hospital and says someone “stable” is coming in and they know nothing else, the hospital is going to be confused or not ready.

OFF TOPIC - Per a suggestion from a previous post, I listened to all 13 of the FINNEGAN TAKES podcasts which are on Spotify, these podcasts interview Jerry Finnegan from the SOS unit back in the day, I thought they were interesting, give them a listen.

Have to agree lotta information there a lot of truth very well said back in the day when you could be the real police Jerry was definitely the real police crazy but did the job. The punks feared him and his team when they pulled up like you said on the podcast, they scattered like rats I personally witnessed it.

This is the dirt bag that liked to hook-up with prostitutes when he flew to Vegas. PURE SCUM.

Everyone who is bitching about the new radios just doesn't understand how things work. A new radio system and its upkeep is worth several BILLION dollars to the contractor which means millions into the pockets of those who approved the deal so stay in your lane and suck. it up or the city will reinstall all of those old call boxes and you will be issued a key and you can call in to the station and whine to the house mouse.

Ben Affleck *full beard & flannel in Argo*

Very true... when I see a sexy, handsome man with some scruff *woof* same man come in clean shaven, my maternal instincts kick in and I want to feed him, make sure his [home]work is done, wash his laundry, give him a big hug and let him know everything's gonna be alright lololol

..........Reasonable security, lag is nil, battery drain only slightly elevated.

1/09/2024 02:05:00 PM

The essential source of all this is that digital requires pure data signal/stream, in really real time, accurate to the fucking bit/byte/whatever a single 0 or 1 is called these days.

A 0 is the absence of the presence of anything.

A 1 is the presence of something, and only that specific, same something.

Thus, compared to the clock beat, both, in strict sequence, have meaning to process and translate into analog signal, thus to human ability to recognize as sense input.

ANY variant from this is error, to be repeat transmitted until no error equals successful transmission/reception.

It' s a bitch tech.

Analog is merely, occasionally, mildly cranky.

Every benefit has it's twin sister deficit.

Tow truck drivers have encrypted radios too. They got black market radios They show up before the police again.
1/09/2024 09:23:00 AM

They do not. In order for those to work they would have to have the encryption key and then program the radios. They monitor CFD radios. Notice they only show up to the calls where injuries are present because they automatically dispatch CFD. Also they potentially have moles either at OEMC or on CPD...

Radio antennas are designed for the transmitter with a specific resistance and to a specific length relative to the radio frequency used. There's some moderate math involved. Proper antenna for the frequency can have pretty radical improvement in reception and transmission, in some cases 4-8x better. There's a lot of good hardware for most transmitters, God only knows what sort of miracle would be required to have CPD issue the good stuff.

The missing question here is:

How the fuck does an officer evaluate a gunshot wound as anything other than location on body?

Is an officer a doctor?

Is any officer a paramedic?

Any of these single words do not provide any useful info to the receiving physicians, as they can only be taken as a guess by laymen.

In fact, describing the injured as stable requires knowing what that fucking means.

That may have some value, if what is described is true.

Describe what you see.

You are correct but apparently inspectors are not doing the job, find me 2 coppers not fresh out of the so called academy dressed alike? Why no more revolver inspections on Wednesdays? As a matter of fact why are the supervisors at roll call not checking uniform standards? the answer is because many of them look like slobs the fish stinks from the head down!Whatever happened to keeping squads clean? Free car wash but coppers who look like crap like their vehicles to reflect their style!
