Check Handcuffs
Remember, this still happens here occasionally:
- Indiana State Police late Friday were trying to figure out how a
woman in police custody managed to escape her handcuffs – and steal a
LaPorte County police sport-utility vehicle.
[...] Melissa Collins, 21, of Lafayette, Indiana, was taken into custody and handcuffed at the scene. She was secured in the front passenger seat of a 2021 Ford Explorer police car assigned to LaPorte County Deputy David Grimberg, state police said. But somehow, Collins got out of the handcuffs, unbuckled the seatbelt, and drove off in the police car, state police said. Officers tried to chase Collins, but she got away, state police said.
As they looked for the stolen police car, state police came upon debris in the roadway in the area of 2100 S and 875 W outside La Crosse, Indiana. They went on to find the stolen police car submerged in the water in a ditch, state police said. It appeared that Collins had crashed the squad car after crossing some railroad tracks at a very high speed, state police said.
Collins was found dead inside the SUV. An autopsy by the LaPorte County Coroner's office was to determine the cause and manner of her death.
Over our careers, we met two individuals who, even when handcuffed, were able to rotate their arms / shoulders over their heads to bring their cuffed hands in front of their body. We also met a more than a few who could slip the cuffs under their asses and get them in front of their body.
Actually getting out of the handcuffs was a bit rarer, and usually ended up being either improperly secured or having a shim device.
At least this one had a happy ending.

That's a new way to "sleep with the fishes!"
Front passenger seat?
Hmmmmmmmm........
Well kids put some time on the job, back in the early 90's two tact guys from 013 put a stop on a white girl who was double or triple jointed, she was in a stolen car & tact guys cuffed her & put her in their unmarked car with it running. This woman slipped out her cuffs then drove off in the tact car then parked it few blocks away with keys & cuffs on the floorboard. We arrested her 45 min later in a taxi cab in 010. Lesson learned always turn off & lock your doors.
Thin young girls can get out of cuffs because even the smallest setting isn't tight enough.
It's happened to me multiple times on BWC.
I've had to use second cuffs to fill the void in the first pair.
VERY happy ending! Cost of one squad versus 20 years of three hots and a cot. Didn't take an innocent with her either.
At best, handcuffs are a temporary restraining device. You should secure the prisoner with the backs of their hands facing each other - palms out. It's a PITA, but double-locking them not only keeps them from getting tighter, it helps defeat shimming by the prisoner.
Didn't she crash head-on with another vehicle, killing two elderly people? Or have I got two occurrences cornfused? If so, it wasn't a happy ending for the two elders and somebody else's ass is about to be in a sling.
I dealt with a woman before who was so skinny, I’m talking about anorexic skinny, that I put my cuffs on her and clicked them to the last click, and they still were loose on her wrists. It was like trying to put a handcuffs on the broomstick.
Such a waste.
That poor innocent SUV.
You can do it with a paper match.
Not a cop but don't suspects go in the back, behind the cage?
Hate to admit it, but I had one babe slip out of handcuffs. No matter what, found they couldn't fit tight enough over her skinny wrists. Sick feeling seeing that.
“Happy ending”!! I don’t think so. The false imprisonment and wrongful death lawsuits are sure to follow. Can’t wait to find out which school graduated this gal. Certainly her family will remind us that she was a promising young graduated honor roll student. Probably even valedictorian.
All these young honor roll students being arrested makes me wonder…I understand that there is a necessity to grade on a bit of a curve, but does it always need to be an “S” curve.
Her family already has lawyer on speed dial. Not her fault at all here comes the protests and law suits.
That poor copper four years on the job is going to be fed to the lions watching see, would hate to be on the paper would hate to be there copper I’m sure he saw an innocent little girl 21 years old. Felt compassion for her and this is the result now she’s dead, and now they will go after the copper typical liberal playbook criminals do whatever they want and now they go after the copper however, what is the procedure that he followed?
i wish that would happen here more often...

Seems she was a "bit" off. Arrested at 18 for breaking into her (ex) boyfriend's apartment, texting him, then when he showed up, biting and pepper spraying him.
I have seen it before with small framed woman who get arrested, cuffs dont get put on the same way as a guy, you know trying to be kind and all to the bitch and see what happens. Treat both the same way, tight double locked and secured. Whenever I got the old "these cuffs are to tight" bullshit, I always told them, they aint for pleasure, otherwise they would have fur around them...lmfao

Well she wont be doing that again...
Remember this one girl over by Fullerton and Hamlin that would always slip out of regular cuffs. Had very small hand and wrists. Every time she got arrested, she'd hand you the cuffs when you opened the door.
Females in particular over the years have the talent. When they're super skinny at the wrist use zip ties or cuff them behind the back above the elbows. Use extra cuffs if needed but the works great. Uncomfortable yes but definitely secure.
Back in the day I locked up some guy Erik Weiss out of Detroit. Bastard could not be kept in cuffs no matter what we did. Heard he turned his life around and went into show business.
Placed through rear belt loop and double locked usually prevents this sort thing.
Use Zip Tie/ Plastic Flex Cuff to secure Handcuff Chain to Belt Loop or rear portion of Belt. This may not work well with Hinge- style Handcuffs.
Front seat hummer?
I just watched a video on YouTube where a black woman was trying to slip the cuffs while in the back seat of the police car. You've got to tighten those down. They hurt? Tough, stop squirming. They'll be off soon enough after you're booked.
Well she fucked around and found out! Bet she won't do that no mo!!
Long, long ago, Northwestern Memorial Hospital EM two coppers brought in a large male, black. HUGE!
A doctor friend who was working in the EM that night was assigned this patient.
The patient was rolled into the examing room on a cart and became HIGHLY AGITATED as the door closed.
The patient BROKE THE HANDCUFFS that were behind the back!!!!
And went for the throat of one cop.
The other is using his stick on the hands of the perp that happened to be around the other cop's neck; to NO EFFECT.
My doctor friend, a smaller guy, was trapped diagonally opposite the door and said, "he didn't know if he should shit or go blind"...
Changing tactics he went with a headshot; still NO EFFECT.
Then with a mighty swing, he knocked out the perp and BROKE THE F'N STICK!!!!
I have asked around about the breaking of cuffs. They say that some of the links can wear thin and become weakened.
My doctor friend hasnever fully recovered from this event.
Why wasn't she in the back seat of a vehicle equipped with prisoner cage? -Oh, well...She won't do that again. I'm pretty sure the people of Laporte County are a little bit better off today.
Do Not Ever leave your car running when you get out of the car!
Do Not Ever leave the car keys in the car when you get out of the car!
It's not that complicated.
I saw one arrestee remove a considerable amount of skin and muscle off one hand slipping the cuff off. Felt no pain. Drugs do wonders.

Yeah sure you locked up Houdini, who died 97 years ago & you even misspelled his first name, as it was Erich!

Did she scratch your headboard when wiggling out of the cuffs? I hate it when that happens!

They certainly do in my house!

Florida woman stole sheriff's patrol car and died in high-speed crash that killed 2 others

Alls well that ends well.

I stand corrected
Weisz
Clever to catch it though
There is a trick to get the cuffs to work on someone with extremely small wrists.
I’m surprised it’s not more common knowledge.
If you are still having those with tiny wrists slip out, maybe grab an old timer and ask em about it.
We know that the Keesing Bandit has fur-lined handcuffs in his pretty loft and would welcome his comments in this regard.
Got a wiggler? Cuff hands. Cuff ankles. Cuff both together...
Don't say perp.
