Mayor Brandon Johnson said Wednesday he is “frustrated” that the city of Chicago spent approximately $524 million on employee overtime in 2023 — 19% more than in 2022, with more than half of the total amount used to compensate Chicago Police Department officers for working extra hours.
“Yes, I’m frustrated, yes,” Johnson said in response to a WTTW News story that was the first to report that the Chicago Police Department spent $293 million on overtime last year, 40% more than in 2022 and nearly three times the $100 million earmarked for police overtime set by the Chicago City Council as part of the city’s 2023 budget.
“This has been a situation that has gotten increasingly out of control,” Johnson said at an unrelated news conference. “The superintendent and I, we both agree on that.”
And why is it out of control? C'mon, you and Larritorious are both adults, you may have passed elementary school at some point, maybe even high school. And you existed in the school system for a short while, correct?
- Overtime covers shortages.
- Shortages are caused by lack of hiring.
- Lack of hiring was (is) caused by defunding, demoralizing and denigrating an entire profession to the point no one wants to do it.
And who spent the better part of three years doing that?

Furthermore, the city knows it's cheaper to pay the overtime than it is to pay benefits to more personnel. There's a break-even point somewhere there, but the accounting dweebs will have to come up with that number sooner or later.

One of the commenters to that wttw news articles made the point that the City should modify the promotor contracts (meaning Air & Water Show, NASCAR Street Race, Taste of Chicago) to save money for police services that up the police budget. I was assigned to the Command Post for a couple years at the taste. I had to attend the vendor/owner daily business meetings and act as a liaison between them and the PD. I was there as an observer and listen to their complaints about security, safety, traffic etc. There were other City Dept. Reps. there as well. We acted as a conduit to our bosses. What I do remember was these vendor/owners would discuss how much money was made from the previous day and from their talk it was always was positive.
Most of those people are well connected. Some outside group should look at what these groups are making and is the City being paid enough for its services. Also they need to look at the political donations and to whom.

Don't you just love when defunding leads to much more money actually going to the evil police they're trying to keep money from? The irony will surely be lost on them. It's similar to how they think making everyone drive electric cars will somehow magically make the world free of pollution, without realizing the environmental impact of all the things needed to support an all electric vehicle world. They never actually think anything through. It's completely impossible for the world or even just this country to switch entirely to electric vehicles. The batteries don't just grow on trees. The current infrastructure can't support the electricity needed, nor will it ever. There are major logistical issues with everyone needing to charge their vehicle every few hundred miles, with limited chargers and an unattainable power grid. Now they're surprised that making it impossible to fully staff the police department would somehow result in paying overtime to the officers who are left to fill the void. And they're surprised that paying those officers at a higher rate is more expensive than it would've been to pay officers who weren't on overtime. It's all common sense, and it's been in front of their faces for years now, but somehow it's a surprise now. Imagine how much worse it will get with retirements and the extreme decline in hiring. No one wants the job now, so it'll only get worse as the numbers dwindle further. Eventually, this will be the wild west, like certain parts already are. And they'll scratch their heads wondering how they can blame the police and those evil Republicans who haven't had a hand in local government since dinosaurs roamed the area.
Conehead the Bonehead needs to know, yes we are paying a lot for police because crime is rampant and will continue to grow because the bad boys don’t go to jail and if they do it’s never for a full sentence. And when they are arrested they are released in hours. That’s why you need a lot of police to respond.
Now if you had a zero tolerance and the offenders went and stayed in jail the calls for service would go down. You probably done need as many police then. So the Cone wants to take that money and pi$$ it away on more bull$hit social programs which is just redistribution of wealth and taking care of good Democrats who provide senseless programs.

This city reminds me of a movie I saw more than 40 years ago. I can't remember the title. It was about a society inherited from a superior group who built it. Those in control could not properly operate it and it fell into ruin. It was just entertainment.

Cancelling officers regular days off and making them work 12 hour shifts can get expensive. The amount of overtime spent on the CPD is nothing compared to the waste going on at the CPS. Blowie should be an expert on that.

I don't personally like or need overtime. In fact, I avoid it at all costs. Too many coppers are used to sucking at the teat of OT. Imagine if we stood together on an OT refusal. We can't strike but we CAN reject OT. It won't happen because too many greedy officers would never agree to take a temporary cut in pay for a short time.
Conehead can cry all he wants about OT. As soon as he realizes that OT is cheaper than new hires, the OT train will continue. He just needs to keep his mouth shut and not cry about it in the media so much...

OT spending is in line with the manpower shortage. Take a low ball average cost of each vacant position at 125k (salary + benefits). Let’s say we’re 1,300 short, so that’s about $162.5M annually. A city this big with this big of a crime problem should have at least 13,500 sworn bodies so this would put us at 1,800 short which is $225M annually. Add all the other required OT like court, extended tours, etc and we should easily be budgeting $300M for OT each year.
I don't understand, you have less officers handling the same workload and you're saying theirs's a correlation to the increase in overtime. I purpose CPD brings in a manager from the Board of Education, when the clock strikes a certain time, you are out the door and on your way home. Tell the victims of crimes you are interviewing that you tentatively will see them tomorrow.

We had that candidate, his name is Paul Vallas. Unfortunately, not enough coppers voted for Paul Vallas. If Paul Vallas won the election, then the police would be allowed to be aggressive again.

Spent over 18 years in the Det. Division. Our units were always understaffed and OT was encouraged if not required of you. If you complained our pre-woke supervisors would dump more work on you to ‘show you who’s in charge’. A couple females started complaining constantly resulting in their getting more work assigned to them. Their reverse psychology worked as. They paid off their mortgages, kid’s tuition, bought condos in Florida and built up their deferred comp. We followed their example. Retirement is great. I own three classic cars.
