Still "No"

Another massive payout coming:

  • An unauthorized police chase leading to a traffic accident that left a 15-year-old boy unable to walk or speak will likely result in a $45 million settlement with the city — one of the largest in Chicago history.

The proposed payment would go to Nathen Jones, who suffered a “massive traumatic brain injury” in the April 2021 crash, according to the family's attorney.

The reasons don't matter. The justification doesn't matter.

Only the end result is what lawyers and juries are looking at.

Empathy for the young person's life, forever changed.

The article seems intentionally vague. It does not mention if he has brain wave activity, or if he is on a respirator to breathe.

If someone is brain dead and on a respirator, even traditional Catholic teaching allows that removing the person from the respirator can be an ethically responsible option. This was the situation of Karen Ann Quinlan in the 1970s.

One might cynically wonder why a family would artificially prolong the life of someone who might be in the same circumstance.

The Slum-Times article incorrectly refers to the "murder of George Floyd". St. George of Fentanyl died from a self-induced drug overdose.

It is not just the job that is a nightmare. Policies like this have given the criminals the upper hand. Leftist social justice warriors “communists” have turned this country upside down. The sad thing is that they have gained control through election theft. Bathhouses Barry wasn’t kidding when he said he was going to “fundamentally change” our country.

This is painfully thin on relevant info.

Was the injured kid
A) The one fleeing?
B) A passenger in the fleeing vehicle?
C) Just an unlucky shlub that was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got clobbered?

If the answer is 'A', fuck him.
If it's 'B', I have only slightly more sympathy (but not $45mil worth).
If it's 'C', my heart goes out to him and his family. I don't have much of a problem with both drivers (perp & cop) getting hung out to dry.

Most of the morons still chasing do it for one reason: ego. There are still a few who chase because they legitimately want to catch a bad guy, but 99% do it to pitied their fragile ego. How dare this person not pull over for me! I'm the police! I'll show him! Well, all-star, he's not pulling over because he doesn't have to anymore. The department, city, county, state, and country have all agreed they would rather let him get away than be stopped from committing crimes. Even if you catch him, he'll be out to do it again, while you jeopardize your safety, career, financial wellbeing, and freedom, every time you decide to chase for any reason. If someone shoots at you or your fellow officers, go ahead and chase. But remember to terminate when the order says you must, or it won't matter why you chased. There are very few chases that shouldn't be self-terminated according to the order. You won't be saved just because a supervisor didn't terminate. Don't chase for any other reason, unless you care about the crime committed more than you care about yourself. Learn to let things go, even crimes like fleeing from the police, in order to protect yourself. I wish every criminal who flees from the police could be caught, or better yet, was killed in a fiery crash that only harms them. I wish people would pull over when the police try to stop them. That's not what happens anymore. They know they can run and get away 99% of the time. The only ones at risk are the police and anyone unlucky enough to be in the path of the fleeing vehicle. Get your ego in check and wave as they drive off. It's not right, but it's the only way to minimize your chance of being the next headline.

The lawyers always go for the deep pockets. The fact that the criminals flee at high speed, run stop signs and lights, seems to mean nothing. The twisted lawyer logic is that the thug would not be fleeing at high speed if the cops were not chasing. But, chasing someone in an unmarked police vehicle is the height of stupidity.

You say no. But can we pursue legally? Yes. Can we pursue as part of our policy? Yes. Can we pursue a vehicle for just traffic and not call it in until after the accident? No, no we can not. What you should be saying, is that if you are going to pursue, have ICC and BWC rolling, make sure it is for an offense that our order says we can pursue for and make immediate notification of the attempt to pursue to OEMC who will then notify a supervisor. Bingo… you have done your job. You are within policy so far. Know your policy and save your ass. If they crash and you adhere then you will be ok. You may still get sued, but you will be covered. I’ve been in two fatal pursuits in my career. The first was NOT within department policy and ended in a large pay out. The 2nd was within policy and lasted 14 minutes but we were within policy. We were found in compliance by the department and we were cleared in a lawsuit before trial during summary judgement. If you’re going to pursue, be within policy. Sometimes it’s just that simple.

Following policy doesn't mean you're safe from consequences. I remember seeing in-car camera footage from an incident that resulted in a fatal crash. Police tried to pull over a car. Car took off. Police did not pursue. Car immediately ran a stop sign and crashed. That one didn't work out for the police, who had only tried to pull over the car. Yes, the policy still allows chases. Yes, you can chase and have everything work out great. However, the chances anything goes a little sideways, or you forget one little part of that policy, or someone gets killed even when you complied perfectly with the policy, are still there. No reason to take those chances now, except for very limited circumstances. Most of the chases are for stolen cars or robbery/gun offenders. The rest are for drugs or traffic nonsense. And none of those are good enough reasons to take the chance. I wish the police could chase everyone and it would all work out. I wish we had spike strips and pit maneuvers and boxing in and shooting out the tires... anything to stop the criminals from winning. That's not gonna happen though. The hard chargers need to accustom themselves with the new reality. Bad guys will get away. Crime will continue to rise. Do what you can to stop criminals without the city deciding you're worse than those criminals for trying to do your job.

You're joking, right? You're confused and would rather hear the official policy? Go fucking read it. If you ever plan on pulling over anyone for any reason, read the pursuit policy and all related policies. Pretend you're studying for the sergeant's test or something, since you're acting like you'd have no reason to ever read it. Too many people don't know the orders they choose to violate on an almost daily basis. Then they're shocked and pissed when some "mean boss" spars them for their Hollywood chase. The official policy absolutely allows chases, but it also very specifically outlines when those chases must be terminated and all the prohibitions and rules for the chasing vehicle. It also points out the vague "balancing test," where there are no official guidelines, but you should know better when you cross the imaginary line. It's written to make chases not be completely prohibited, while leaving the door open to take disciplinary action against anyone who chases, regardless of how closely they think they followed the order. That's why SCC released this very helpful graphic of what the order actually means. Don't chase unless it's worth your job, your financial wellbeing, your freedom, and any lives that could be taken by the outcome of that chase. You'll be the bad guy every time.
