If the Chicago Teachers Union gets its way with the mayor they helped elect, their next contract will boost the average teacher’s pay by half to $144,620 in the 2027-2028 school year.
The average now is $93,182.
Teacher pay rose more than $43,000 since 2012 – nearly triple the private-sector salary increase. If CTU’s demands are met, another $51,438 will be added to the average salary by the next contract – a 55.2% increase.

Unlike what people think we were watched closely my daleys office and our productivity was always used as a threat to privatize our work in new construction. I know that sounds unfair, but it's much more fair than overpaying them for doing nothing.

There are some good teachers employed by CPS but are surrounded by a sea of teachers who were educated in the CPS system, therein lies the problem where some CPS students are well below the averages.

If compensation is tied to students (that actually show up) results, the teachers will quietly be encouraged to help kids cheat or just teach to the test. Reality is kids will “graduate” dumber than they are graduating now. It was recently reported that many colleges/universities do no accept CPS diplomas as it is now. CPS is and has been beyond repair for decades. There is no cure for what ails CPS. I say give the education tax dollars to a private education group and let them run things as a private enterprise. It has the possibility of eliminating much of the direct political influence (hospitals operate this way) and cannot be worse than it is now.

I couldn’t agree more with this comment. Most of the cops are the biggest hypocrites. What 70% or more fell in line with the vaccinations and the portal right away? We are our own worst enemy. Every time someone tries to better themselves and leaves the job for a different department or a different job altogether, we hear all the people comment on how great it is to be here at CPD. Come to work late, leave early, do nothing and get paid, etc. Then those same people comment here about the teachers and their pay and how they don’t “produce” which is usually the fault of the parents and how the kids are raised at home. Either way, did we forget how many cry babies cried on here about the cutting out of overtime but were the same people bragging about making time and a half just to show up and do nothing? How many of you were proud of doing nothing and getting paid big bucks? And you are different from the commie democrats how?

CTU teachers should be paid by their notarized ACT scores. A CPS teacher who scored ACT 36, and ACT corporation confirms score, possibly is worth $150,000 after five years of "highest-performance" teaching evaluations. A CPS teacher who scored ACT 19 (often stated to be average ACT score of average CTU teacher) should get no more $75,000.
CTU teachers who scored below ACT 22, of which reportedly is a large number of CTU teachers, should be compelled to retake ACT and score at least ACT 24, given they're college graduates. If the CPS teachers aren't functionally-literate, can't read at 12th grade level, can't perform mathematics at 12th grade level, then they don't belong in any classroom as its teacher.
CTU talks Big Talk about salaries and benefits and progressive social issues, and utterly disregards the miserable teaching skills and poor academic performance of their many disadvantaged CPS students. CTU is a pox upon public education.

I was talking to a former board member and he fed me these facts: a third of the 27 members elected are over the age of 70, over half of the board of directors is retired/disability and some are coming up on it soon, so they will double dip with a pension and either trustee pay or elected officer pay and the board has only three tier 2 members and lastly >>> **next election in '27, 75% of our union people will be retirees.
