- You've got to hear bout the sgts test. Total S.show. Doors close @ 0900. Just kidding, you can come whenever you want. Made the rest of us who were responsible sit there for hours extra. Also, no electronics but you can bring your phone and delay the process even longer. There has to be a beef about letting slackers in past the time. How can you qualify for sgt if you can't show up on time? No excuses. I made it there from about as far Northwest as you can come from. Also, all the brass there giving hugs to candidates. The fix is in. Fop?
So we heard that over 3,600 people signed up, maybe a bit more.
Traffic was a disaster, so that even those who built in a big cushion for arrival times were in danger of missing the 0900 cut off time. And McCormick Place staff were being unreasonable with parking "restrictions," so much so that dozens of Officers ended up with parking tickets.
However, the Department did make allowances for the unforeseen dumb-ass planning and sheer incompetency of coordinating, seeing as how almost 500 Officers arrived after 0900.
We heard that since the Consent Decree people don't work weekends, they're the ones who insisted on a weekday test.
UPDATE: Numerous stories about Larritorious and other exempts - none of whom ever passed a promotional exam high enough to make it by score - giving good luck speeches.

This place is a shit show, abortion and dumpster fire all wrapped into one on any given day. 19-22 August is gonna be all that on steroids.
The examination comprised 20 reference questions to be completed within 40 minutes, and 115 (detailed) recall questions allotted 3 hours and 10 minutes. Due to the parking situation the exam started at 10:00am, an hour late. The reference portion was given first. During the 2nd part (recall) some officers were packing up leaving 15 minutes after the start time… I wish I could read that fast.

Not to mention the MULTIPLE people who had test booklets with missing questions! Many people in my section alone had booklets that jumped from question 36 to 70! Then when told, the proctors made them wait over 25 minutes to receive new books and some of those were still misprinted. This has to be a beef on its own. What a joke of a department
Did anyone else hear and see the argument between the two proctors at the front of section 18? The one proctor called the other a racist a@@ b#### and then left. Very unprofessional.
1st watch officers got screwed with the timing and delays. Force some of these 2nd watchers to take a test at the equivalent of 9pm and have it delayed till 11pm and the moderator read like an illiterate fool.

If you showed up after 0900 you should be DQd from test and merit pick. It sucked waking up early as fuck. It sucked even more when you get there and find out the fucking moron brass failed to secure parking commensurate to the number of officers who applied to test. It is fucking absurd to find out all the risks of tickets and tows were irrelevant since the others were let in. Why were they afforded an extra fucking hour to study on their phone while others did the right thing and turned their shit in or left it in the car. Why were there so many GD marked and unmarked squads (clear violation of the order/ test invitation letter) on scene taking up the very few legal parking spaces? This test should be scrapped and administered fairly but CPD won’t admit they fucked up badly.

I live north. Left at 6:30 and arrived at the MLK exit on 55 at 7:45 and everyone (coppers) were cutting in from both sides thinking they were in their blue and white. It was a snails crawl for over an hour. Arrived at parking lot A at 9:30(yes it took that long from the MLK exit) only to be turned away from the parking attendant stating the lot A was full. Had to find parking off site and pay $$. Super difficult to get there on time. I didn’t know it was going to take me close to 3.5 hrs to get to the building. They Should have had more parking and someone directing traffic. Biggest cluster fuck I’ve ever seen.
I remember when I took the test back in the day, I got a big hug from Mauer and he wished me a blessed day.

Noticing an issue beyond p.os control, the decision was made to allow later arrivals, good call. I was there. Interesting how some people can twist What happened. I came in early 730AM. At 830AM and 845AM I noticed that there were an awful lot of empty seats. The test announcer kept mentioning the test is delayed due to a parking situation.
McCormick Place usually has the traffic aides that monitor which parking garage and which floor is either fully occupied or not. At 7:30 AM, I noticed those traffic aides were not present.
Parking garage A was full and officers kept trying to go in and search for a parking spot. This is what caused a delay.
It was a complete shit show. Waited 1 hour and 40 minutes to take the test because the typical people that show up 15 minutes late to every roll call did the same for the test. Save me the b.s. about parking, If lot A was full then spend the 25 bucks and park in the other garages, it's on you for showing up past 0800hrs. Also fuck you to the ignorant people who can't read and didn't bring pencils and did bring phones, hats and hoodies, thanks for adding on another 20 minutes.
If this is true, the fix is definitely in, but it is getting more and more blatant. I arrived at 0800. The line to get in to the garage was very long. I made my way in to the garage and a large amount of cars were leaving a po rolled his window down and said the garage was full. I could not do a u turn. I was stuck in the traffic and chaos. I got to the second floor I think and was able to do a u turn and leave. But leaving the garage was an equal disaster. Now the traffic aides appeared on the ground floor they directed us to go park in parking lot C. Parking lot C is across the Lake Shore Drive east of McCormick place. I found a parking spot and there are no signs that direct us to hall F. We walked over the bridge and in to the other side and now there was a long wait to get in. The FOP representative said we will be allowed to get in.
Does anyone really expect this city to enforce rules and regulations when they will just be called racist for doing so....
That was the worst possible promotional exam I have ever taken. I was there at 7 am parked and had no problems. Then I had to wait 3 hours to take the test that had nothing to do with being a sergeant. The curve is going to have to be 0 on this one Larry.
I was late, only because I followed instructions provided. I was on the i55 for close to an hour. When I finally got to lot A, I was told it was full. They should just have the exam at different sites. We don't need to be in the same building.

It was bad. Almost embarrassing. If I was superintendent I would have turned away any and all who showed up with cellphones, smartwatches, and forbidden clothing. If these people can’t or won’t or don’t care enough to read and follow instructions they don’t deserve a seat at the table. Yesterday the Bosses should have stood ten toes down and turned away anyone with a hooded sweater. Why? Because it was in the damn rules. That’s why. Lot A was offered at a discounted rate. First come first serve.
Numerous cars boxed in with people trying to leave but a car improperly parked blocking them.
The truth is 95% of all the exempts that were present wouldn’t score a 70% on that exam, including our leader. #fact! That’s how pathetic this dept truly is with merit promotions for leadership roles..
Overall the test was easy as part 1 usually is. First 20 were open book and tested if you knew how to use a table of contents. Next 115 were m.c.
They need a better location. Not downtown. Not during the week. Rent out the horizon or something on the edge of town with flat lot parking.
I mentioned before to give a waiver to those that have passed part 1 at twice in their career. This would have alleviated parking/congestion issues.
Last time for part 2 I was sequestered for hours after I took the exam as not divulge the questions to the people coming in after me. Funny thing was the questions were already known from the previous days.
This was not the first test administered at McCormick Place. Do you think it was the administrations fault or all the new bees that have no clue what proper planning is? Lets be honest, if you do not have the skillset to navigate from one parking lot at navy pier to the next or find street parking. You do not have the skillset to be a supervisor.
Parking lot was full. People were circling around the block and traffic was a nightmare. It took 35 minutes to get from 22nd and State to the venue 4 blocks. Parking lot personal didn’t tell people until I circled around twice. I barely got in on time. It wasn’t the people talking the test. It was the venue and the bosses running it. They needed traffic control there.

And how many of those late going to be merit sergeants? If the department just realized that merit is ruining the department, then maybe they would change it. But 95% of the gold stars are merit. Merit is disgusting.
The show(yes, show) was held up until the last connected person finally arrived. The hugs were the administrators way of passing out the answers to each preferred candidate. They were told to wear a baggy clothing item and upon hugging, a piece of paper with the answers was "slipped in" to an outside pocket.

Those bringing things in that are on the banned list should have been disqualified. When I took my only sgts test at CVS, I left my house on the NW side at 4am to get there for a 9am test. Sat in my car for an hour, had a cup of coffee and relaxed before going in at 10. If you can't make a 9am roll call on the day of a special event where parking and traffic may be a challenge, I don't want you as one of my sergeants. Excuses are like assholes, everybody has one. We have become a nation of pussies.

It was horrific experience as always. Honestly I don’t know why I put myself in this predicament again. I arrived about 7:25 am was met by a line of exempts that I had to high five to get into the testing area. Once in I then waited for the late stragglers, they were still allowing people to come in at 9:50 am., parking issues because apparently parking ran out with all the exempts taking the prime spot locations. Most late testers brought their electronic devices and had to check them in. Started reading the instructions about 10:15 am for the test, it was an extremely difficult test way beyond my 8th grade reading level (CPS graduate) and after reviewing 1,300 pages of studying reading material, I began to have a panic attack. Definitely this test will get curved at 20 % for a passing score so the chosen merit picks can pass. Left about 2:20 pm and didn’t look back pushed through the crowd in the hallway and then drove an hour in traffic to get home..
Like an old timer told me… Kid:
30% are merit (desk dollies, side pieces, and Felattio males on knee pads)
30% have the actual test and studying from it (headquarters & exempts wife’s)
30% are the inside mice with time to study
10% are the gifted smart (book nerds)

I was straight up 500 feet from the Lot A entrance at 745am and did not reach the gate to be turned around to head to lot B till 845. Being former military i understand being early but if im already an 1+ early at the entrance and was afforded the same opportunity as everyone who wandered into lot A previously I would be been in my seat by 815. It is an absolute failure on the city to send a letter for the entirety of the test takers to park in a lot that does not have the capacity to hold the amount of letters mailed. If I knew to park in any of the 3 lots upon arrival I could have been in my seat by 715am. Coppers need to stop targeting each other when they need to realize the administration failed us.
You know what they say at the Ivy League. “Punctuality is a white construct”. Tone it down before you are outed as racist.
Meritorious Larry and his meritorious friend Novalez standing up front giving a speech about the integrity and importance of the sergeant exam was the cherry on top. Merit sergeants merit lieutenants and both promoted to deputies within a year and a half of making Merit LT. Truly inspiring. I wish I could have such a career like those two. I hope someone sees in me what they saw in them to meritoriously promote them past each exam and then to the highest ranks.

They had the test at McCormick place. One of the world’s largest convention centers. How could there not be enough parking? Because McCormick place didn’t allow it. I’m guessing it’s the #1 reason why St. Jude is back on Michigan Ave. McCormick Place and the parking at soldiers field wasn’t gonna be free anymore, and the city didn’t want to pay.
With all the whining about the most convenient lot was full early (what a shocking surprise) then having to find a free or low cost alternative place to park just proves again that coppers are some of the cheapest and whiniest people on this planet. Any copper bothering to use the brain would know this beforehand and have planned to park in the closest public parking pay spot because you know the police masses will not use that strategy. If you look at it as a one-time cost investment in your future who cares putting money back to the city? It saddens me to see how things don't change. Future leaders my a**.

My GPS had me arriving at 7:45. If that makes me irresponsible then holy shit, I'm a bigger scum bag than I thought. Just because you show up 2 hours before doors open doesn't mean you're grade A Sgt material. I drove in from the south and there were several tacticool jeeps driving on the shoulder, cutting people off. Some marked and unmarked units, using lights and sirens. Were they people with take home cars using the squad to their advantage? Maybe. Why put rules out there if they're not going to be enforced. I followed the NO hoodie rule. I had a button up flannel fleece jacket on and was told I could not wear it and they gave me a grocery bag to store it in underneath my seat. No cellphone but hey, if you didn't follow the rules, you were rewarded with a zip loc bag to store it in. I should have brought ear plugs like they suggested because the noise from directing people to check out was RIDICULOUS, yelling, cackling. Some of these people from the testing company looked like they were going to hit up a protest afterwards. In one section, there was a lady who had super bright red hair, big glasses and a BIG ole mask to match with 3 inch platform shoes.
To the person crying about not knowing when or where the challenge sessions were going to be held, you clearly didn't read the email that went out BEFORE exam day, pal

4100 signed up with HR and paid the fee. at 9am, 3100 people had entered into the hall. as far as them keeping the doors open til 10, that decision was made by command staff- go figure, then 500 people came in until they locked it up. the FOP had BETTER do something. 3100 people showed up early and came prepared, 500 people didn't take it serious enough and how many people turned around left not knowing they would've been allowed in????? that's the real grievance. they probably will not do anything because jcat worships the ground snelling walks on and 90% of the board is spineless.

Making an error harms either the defendant or the victim. Harm should allow for civil (financial) justice/punishment.

3000 people had no problem being on time and left their houses early enough to accommodate for the traffic that we all knew would be an issue. I got there and parked in the lot and just did some last minute reading before going in and lining up before they even opened the doors, along with many, many other people. We prepared. That’s all. No big mystery. If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail. You were all given a major pass…including the cell phones, watches and hats that were brought in. They should have disqualified all of you that brought any of that shit in. Same people that are always late and always have excuses. “I have kids” or “I live to far and traffic “ same people with same excuses. If you’re early you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late.
I’m not surprised, they rushed this test through. There’s nothing wrong with the other list.

Every test I took from Detective to Lieutenant I arrived an hour early.
I enjoyed a cup of of coffee, read over a few important orders .

Applicants were trying to park from 0820-0945 and there was no attendant to notify them that the lot was full. They shouldn’t be DQed because of the incompetence of the city. Showing up on time has nothing to do with the fact that once you got off at MLK and tried getting into the LOT you were stuck there for 40 minutes waiting for everyone to exit to find other parking. ####### PROCTOR issue, so while taking the exam in section 19, I had to use the washroom, I was well into section 2 of the exam, the older M/2 grey bearded & glasses took my exam & answer sheet & handed me the bathroom pass. I quickly returned to section 19 and to my demise this Proctor was no where to be found!! No other proctors had any clue as to his whereabouts! As I stood there waiting I began to panic after 10 min then more after 20min!! The head proctor was so apologetic and gave me a blank answer sheet and a new booklet, I was told if & when the proctor comes back that they will bring me my originall. As I sat back down to search where I left off I finally saw the M/2 proctor return, I quickly ran up to him to retrieve my test & answer key, I swear I cannot make this shit up, after looking at my watch it was a total of 34 fn minutes for his return!! Completely Unprofessional as to not even get an apology! Thankfully I was able to complete the exam before the time ran out!!
Just so people know they closed the parking lot A. I would’ve been inside by 830 but due to McCormick place closing lot a and moving officers to park in lot b and then walk a mile yeah they had to extend the time due to poor planning. Good for you getting there at 7 am. You should get extra points for that one.

Woke up at 5:30, drove at 6, arrived at LOT A at 7. 8am I lined up and walked to registration. At almost 11a the test began. 5.5 hrs of preparation for rules to be broken by others when there was supposedly not exceptions. Everything in this test from the administering of it, parking lies, to many throwable questions should be grieved.
They had the test at McCormick place. One of the world’s largest convention centers. How could there not be enough parking? Because McCormick place didn’t allow it. I’m guessing it’s the #1 reason why St. Jude is back on Michigan Ave. McCormick Place and the parking at soldiers field wasn’t gonna be free anymore, and the city didn’t want to pay.

McCormick Place will allow as many cars to park as they have spaces for and then some. Charging customers for parking is not the same as not allowing them to park. It's sort of the exact opposite. If you let the price of a parking spot keep you from getting a promotion, you don't deserve the promotion, and you're a cheapass. There are numerous lots and several areas nearby with street parking. Anyone who couldn't find parking was just trying to get the free spots closest to the test. Stop being lazy and cheap and you won't have any problems.

Y’all a bunch of salty motherf******. Yes, the city dropped the ball by making this test on a Friday morning and not reacting quick enough to the parking fiasco. I left home at 6:30, but there was an accident on I-55 on top of the morning rush hour. MLK ramp was backed up to Cermak so I went around LSD and the traffic was backed up to 29th St. and MLK. There was a lot of jockeying for position and cutting off. I saw a few coppers motherf*** each other because of the traffic frustration. They should’ve had someone come out to 25th & MLK to tell everyone to go around and find alternate parking.
I was happy to see the command staff. It was a great morale boost because I worked with a lot of them, but would never ask for a merit promotion. I was offered that years ago and I turned it down. I’m glad they extended the time to allow everyone a chance, but I know y’all just want to eliminate the competition because you’ll are too dumb and didn’t study.
I hope I make it just to teach the grumpy assh****s a lesson!

Past exams you were checked or asked about phones at the registration point so as not to even walk into the testing area with them. PO’s were literally handing over phones 5 minutes before the test began. An hour or more of extra studying on phones. Nice great work
For all those who are bitching and moaning about the late comers and how they should by DQ'd.... FUCK YOU!! I did as much studying for this exam as possible, left home 630am, sat in traffic for over 2 hours to get into the parking garage, just to be told that it was full. Took another 40 mins to drive around to parking lot B, just to have the gates to get in malfunction, and then walk almost 1 mile to get in the testing site. I was not irresponsible and was thankful they extended check-in time. It was a cluster a d terrible planning and coordination by the city, but I'm sure those who were allowed in up to an hour late were as thankful as me.
The same ones who were late, are the same ones who are always late for roll call even when the WC has it 15mins after the hour. They are also the same ones who are consistently early for check off. Some of them were moved to late roll call to give them extra time to get to work but were still late.
Congrats to the top 1 or 2 percent who studied and may get promoted. You will have to compete against people who had the answers already, and have a phone call. They are 20 percent of each class.
Now the second part of the test will be subjective to those who actually grade your performance based on their idea of what is right. Remember they likely got a merit promotion themselves. Their minions won't even have to bother to take the 2nd part of the test and they will be in the first class of promotions...
It's all legit...

I said the same thing. I scored in that category on this Covid - 5 day part 2 test and how they handled the whole process with this 2019 exam killed any hopes I had left with this department. It’s very disappointing knowing how high they went on the 2013 test and prior ones as well. So many people that scored under 400 got screwed in every way.
Don’t worry the new list will be down in less than 3 years. Out of 3,500 they’ll only get up to 200 off the list.
Due to so many retirements, last time they promoted 850 off of the list. No lie. I don’t know they’re doing now.

He barely passed the state exam, his HRI had to spoon feed him the exam in after hours study sessions. There are two lists. The grade/score list and the merit list of future promotions. Both are checked against each other and the "lowest" scoring merit nominee determines the cut off point. They will throw out the list when that appointee gets his promotion. Forget how hard everyone else around him studied. You have to be in the top two percent to make it on scores. Everyone else, thanks for playing.
Remember these merit promotees will get another "merit" promotion and then maybe even another. The 20 percent in each class keeps giving the ruling class their own people in any position they want.

Me too. I went day 5 and studied all the “Leaked” questions like others did that went day 2-4. I know I was more fortunate because I had a couple of extra days to study . I spoke in that microphone like it was nobody’s business. They knew I was the real deal and had that authority. I’m just a little below 400. I hope I make it because I put in that time studying for the Sargent test and earned it. (That’s a joke for 1/4 of you numbnuts who took it seriously. And those complaining about people showing up late saying It’s not fair! l showed up on time. Another bunch of numbnuts ).

Boo fuckin who! 06 on midnight sounds like orders to lay low stay outta trouble and not be visible a.k.a. have to deal with anybody or the public calling you out on being daddy's little boy until promotion time then you can let your true self shine like the star you think you are.
Don’t get the Danny Johnson hate? Kid is pretty nice and down to earth and haven’t seen him attempt to use his father to get anywhere. For Christ sake the kid has worked like 6 years in 006 and willingly went to midnights. You think he would still be in 006 on midnights after all this time if he really cared about using his dad’s clout? Leave the fuckin kid alone

It doesn't matter how nice or humble he is, or where he works. The only reason he's on the job at all is because the rules EVERYONE ELSE had to abide by to get hired in the first place, were ignored and changed just for him. He couldn't earn the job on his own, so the rules were changed to get him hired, simply because his father was the superintendent, and then those rules were changed back after he illegitimately graduated from the academy. That's the textbook definition of corruption and nepotism. The rules were not changed for me, and I earned my spot legitimately. I them spent my career working in a few different districts, mostly on third watch and on midnights, including the lovely west side and Englewood, never having an inside spot or working in a special unit. He doesn't belong on the job, period. Let's see if he gets promoted and if he stays on midnights in a shit district. I'm convinced that the only people trying to justify him getting hired were also beneficiaries of the no POWER test loophole while he was in the academy, because they also didn't technically meet the real requirements to get hired or graduate. You can't call him out if you're in the same boat, so you say he's such a great guy. Corruption is the sole reason you got the chance to experience his wonderful personality. Try to remember that.
I dont like Eddie and don't really know his kid. But he works in 06 and you hide in a house mouse unit. Kinda like the pot calling the kettle black. And yes tac, homan etc are considered in my opinion ducker spots. Why don't you push a beat car like an adult before we start throwing shots?

Who is this addressed to? How do you know where they work? Regardless of where they work, did they get the hiring requirements changed in order to get on the job? No? Ok, cool. Then baby Johnson doesn't belong on the job, even if he works in "06," as you call it. If you were calling me a house mouse, I've worked in 001, 002, 003, 004, 005, 006, 007, 008, 009, 011, 012, 013, 014, 015, 018, 021, and 022, and was never assigned to any special unit, and always worked the street. You're guessing, wrongly, in an attempt to discredit anyone daring to criticize baby Johnson. I don't need to guess to criticize him. I know exactly who he is and how he got where he is.

This test was rushed so Waller could get his kid promoted to Sergeant. I guarantee both Waller and Eddie Johnson's kids will both be promoted in the first 3 classes! This Department blows!
Of course, it’s all Waller’s idea. Waller just got his former secretary Sgt.C.S. promoted to sergeant and all she does is hide all night.
Police officers that arrived for Sgt test on time should have been allowed to take the test at 0900hrs.
Those that arrived after 0900hrs should have been seated in a waiting area until those in charge decided to turn people away.
That would have been fair to those that arrived on time.
That’s what a good leader would’ve done.
It is a sad day when any person that scored under 80% receives a promotion on the best police Department in the world 🌎.
This being done to promote people of color. This s proof , there was never any discrimination on the Chicago Police Department.
Why is everyone bitching, the curve will be a 32% anyways?
