PPO Wounded
Is this another one of those "nice" neighborhoods that isn't so nice any more?
- A Chicago police recruit was shot while driving a car, causing a crash on the Northwest Side on Monday morning. Police said the recruit was driving with one passenger westbound on Gunnison Street near Rockwell Street in Lincoln Square at about 12:13 a.m. when multiple shots were fired at them.
As the victims tried to escape, their vehicle careened into several parked cars at Talman Avenue. "I just open the window to see what's going on. I see the Mustang crash into the SUV and I see how it turns around," said neighborhood resident Luis Mejia.
The police recruit, a 21-year-old man, suffered a graze wound to the back and was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said.
Caught in the crossfire of something?
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the kid. Hope this doesn't sour you on joining the force.

020? Regular no good news reported it 2 days ago.
These new recruits are very shady. A lot of them are gangbangers, only fans rejects, drug addicted and entitled idiots.
This alleged random shooting with the recruit is suspect!!
And 20 or so rifle casings in the intersection.
The description NORTHWEST SIDE is used to often for areas that aren't. Rockwell and Gunnison is Albany Park and it's the North side. Its still a semi shitty area.
Am I wrong for thinking there's a slight chance the recruit or his passenger might be "former" gang members who ran into some old rivals? The department wouldn't hire gang members, would they? Hopefully this was just a random act of violence or some kind of road rage incident, but I just can't help but think of the other options, considering the current hiring standards.
The recruits might want to consider another profession and moving to a safer area. Chicago isn’t getting any better. It is only going to get worse and they have just under 29 years to go. It is easier to do other things before you get to much time in.
I wish both PPO a speedy recovery and the best life possible. If they plan on staying best of luck. I have 26 plus years and have been shot at. I have had a lot of days on this job that weren’t easy. Sometimes I think there had to be a better way to make a living that would have been easier on my family than this job. You won’t see days or have a holiday off for the for see able future. You will miss a lot of family events. You will be hated by most politicians and the media. It’s a thankless job!
This would stop if we had some type of gun registering type of laws...
just saying....
signed,..Gov. Lardass
Wrong place wrong time prayers for this copper!
It looked a little like a gang hit from the report I read...
“Hopefully this doesn’t sour you joining the force” why should he join when the information shared in the comment section and provided on this blog give him a 1000 reasons not to? Genuinely curious
Gunnison/Rockwell always sucked when I worked there in the 80s-90s. Giant shitty apartment buildings infested with Assyrian Kings.
Glad the officer is alive. A close call.
Ravenswood area?

Rockwell and Gunnison is Lincoln Square. But the crap from Albany Park spills over into surrounding neighborhoods.

It's NORTHWEST of the city center/downtown. That's where the NORTHWEST comes from. Are you worried that your neighborhood might get lumped in with the slightly shittier ones? It doesn't actually matter what particular name is given to a part of the city, but calling Gunnison and Rockwell the Northwest Side of the city is completely geographically accurate, no matter what the neighborhood is called. Unbunch your panties and take a deep breath.
Lincoln Square was once a perfectly safe sleepy middle-class neighborhood of German and Central European immigrants. Lutz pastry shop, Hild library, Meyer's deli. Now it seems to be car-jacking, converter-stealing, street-mugging, bike hit-n-run, night-shooting, central casting for street-mayhem.
And there's still plenty of good little company men that rant about the ending of residency would hurt us so bad. What if your mother or wife or child got shot just being out and about this city? This is no longer a good place to raise a family.
When our son got out of the military he asked about joining CPD... I and many friends who just retired from CPD advised him not to... The deck is stacked against you, it's not worth it anymore....

The multiple unit buildings, double digit multiple, built in the early part of last century, located in many areas of our city, have, over the passing of the decades, been bought by essentially slum landlords, and, being so minded, minimal upkeep and maximal income.
Section 8 accelerated this.
The ratio of well maintained structures to milked essentially slum buildings is striking.
The advent of high rise rentals effectively squashed the incentives to build multiple unit rentals of less than double digit unit quantity.
The maximum rental income provided by section 8 subsidization, plus the meager monthly required from the pockets of the tenants results in this increase in the less than neighborly residents in many of these areas.
Anywhere there are century old double digit multiple unit rentals, milking section 8 subsidies, there will be residents like these and this is not limited to our city's west and south sides.
That recently revealed scheme to convert older downtown office buildings into residential rentals follows this pattern completely.
With the resulting influx of what comes with this.
The malevolent sides of human natures cannot be restrained by the politicals' babblings.
Someone was in the wrong place at the wrong time by the sounds of it
My German Club is still in Lincoln Square. All the new residents are progressive pukes that voted for B. Johnson, K. Foxx and Biden. They got what they voted for.

am pretty sure with no gang database it is pretty hard to find any gang affiliation.
Juvenile records have been off limits for years so there are no avenues to fully investigate someones background.
I like your optimism that this was something more. Too many of these new PPOs are just shitheads that never got caught.
Rogers Park was one of the first test areas of Section 8 and you can see where it them.
Yep, a formerly ok area got turned into the hood.
