Nothing new. Has happened to me with two department commendations. You get it in the department mail in a flimsy blue folder instead of the nice hard cover. They might acknowledge you in roll call or not. Have to buy your own ribbon from the uniform store too.

In all seriousness, the department is fucked up for the delays in the approval process. The small minority of coppers are out here humping and actively jumping into the middle of shit. So why not give the guys doing the cowboy shit a little atta-boy while they still remember what happened and feel appreciated for it.

Only if this department would handle complaints against officers in this fashion. Of course they are behind in giving out awards, yet they’ve come up with every way to punish officers including a monetary fine for a training that officers take each year.
This is how they did it at the end of WWII to the losing side. This sounds about right! Fitting for the Chicago Police Department being the criminals with their gangs have the upper hand, with our bad policies. The Democrat politicians must be smiling!
I never went to a couple of those award ceremonies. In one the WC said if I didn’t show up he would get a number on me as I would be embarrassing the District. Didn’t go nothing happened. In another one I didn’t go to they sent the Commendation back but someone stole the bar. I never said anything, but I hope they enjoyed the bar!
My reasons were I did not want to have to shake the hand of some politician and have my picture taken with them.
I am not against the awarding of awards to officers who are deserving and for the opportunity to bring their families where they could be proud of their achievement. Officers should have that opportunity.
Over the years I had seen some officers, after receiving an Honorable at roll call, rip them if front of the entire roll call which was embarrassing and disrespectful to all attending the roll call. I guess they thought they were making a statement!

SCC, nobody cares!!! I have a chest full of medals. I've gone to one award ceremony in over 25 years on this job. I just had an award approved that was put in over two years ago (one guy is retired now and another left the job). I'm glad the award was approved. Every officer minus myself didn't have that award. Just approve the awards and be done with it. Nobody wants to go to headquarters and be around the brass. The real police don't want to be the center of attention anyway.
Over the years conducting search warrants I was awarded over 150 HM’s, 3 major awards w/ valor, a tactical excellence award and few others. Our team secretary who was not present at any of the incidents received the exact same awards. He had a gift for documenting(not embellishing, no) these “heroic” events, unashamedly. This was prior to BWC rollout. These days former secretary buddy is a merit sergeant telling search warrant war stories.
Never really gave a fuck as long as the checks didn’t bounce……Actually threw out all CPD related stuff when I moved except my retired ID and IROCC. Fuck you, pay me.

Years ago I went to receive an award & what a joke, the working police got a piece of paper for a DC while the inside house nerds got nice wooden plaques for coming up with some program. I was sent one in the mail before when I was on the medical and it was bent in half with a hard crease and it looked like shit. I just tossed it in the garbage just like how I felt getting it that way.

Took me 3 years to receive my life saving award. In the mail. My name was misspelled and it stated I worked in a different district. Must be hard to be a HQ house mouse.

All an Honorable Mention is that a Sgt will write up a story, give it to the Lazy ass Commander who will sit on it for months ( now yrs) before he signs it, then someone in the front office will print it on a pre signed piece of paper..sent to you...feel better about it now??? Stick the Honorables up your ass!!!

Host regular award ceremonies for major recognitions, send the rest in the mail or presemt them in roll call.
Every time I get one, I get the hammer and a nail and hang it in my living room.

The best is that if you have a pending CR if I'm not mistaken you cannot attend. The ongoing joke used to be you get your award in the front door and get the lawsuit otw out the back door. Everyone always got a laugh out of it because let's be honest most of those Awards came from being proactive and being the police. I think that is complete BS that your family cannot attend along with yourself because of something that hasn't been proven. This department blows.

Awards section was short staffed for a LONG time. They are at least 2 years behind because of it. Let's also be honest, the majority of officers these days do not care for awards.
You cannot blame Cooney for it all. The department kept taking man power away from her.
These awards are worthless and meaningless. To give them value, you should be able to turn them in for suspension time. Let’s say you missed court and are going to get a day, You could trade in one Honorable mention. Say they recommend three days for not turning on your body camera you could trade in three honorable mentions. If you get a big beef And they recommend 30 days Then you could trade in at department commendation Or a life-saving award. The higher the award the more points (days) you have in the bank.
Anyone due an award/commendation/etc (especially 'solid' awards where you actually risked your life or were injured on duty) should also make sure it shows up in your personnel file as well. So when all the "oversight" agencies try railroading you for doing your job, your attorney can point to your awards and say "Really? This officer, with all these official attaboys in their personnel record?" It's a tactic for lawsuits, not a guarantee. But it might make a good impression on a jury.
Well they said in roll call a couple weeks ago that the award ceremony was being canceled, so timeline that this was just sent out is on track.

In this day and time, and the way the department and the public feel about the rank and file, no good act by the police is overrated. Officers should be acknowledged just for showing up to work.

Don’t waste your time going to these ceremonies at the H.Q. The ceremonies are just photo-ops for the top-brass. They only announce and put them together when there’s a lot of negative press on the mayor and the CPD top brass. If you decide to attend, you’ll get to shake hands with Exempts that have never done anything outside screw over others to get promoted.
We’ve read many stories about officers getting fired for using deadly force against armed offenders. The offenders were armed with bats, knives and some had handguns that they pointed at officers. Now that our officer was murdered while attempting to de-escalate a life threatening situation, Novalez wants to mail out awards for work that we’ve done six years ago. It’s a slap in the face. Novalez is this the best you can do for $206,472 a year? What have you been doing all of this time and prior to the mayor wanting to give you the boot?
Our unit doesn’t even write up awards. The commander is too busy trying to find herself.
As long as the awards go on your permanent record, all good. But I would rather get 4 hpurs comp time.

Another visible side effect of deteriorating leadership in the Department. Cheapening significant awards desensitizes heroism, bravery and initiative not only for the individual but also for the rank and file. Nothing new, late 90s or early 2000s, went down for my 3rd DC, stood in line, called my name. Family came up, took usual photo. Fam went back to their seat, I went to mine. Opened up the little envelope, it felt flat. Piece of paper said IOU. They gave me an IOU instead of the little star, forgive me I don’t recall what the name is on consecutive ribbon accomplishments. But an IOU is what I got. We had a pre-planned lunch after afterward. Everybody wanted to see what I got at lunch, I’ve kept them pretty sheltered from the job. They were expecting something grandiose. Showed them the IOU and the laughed up a storm. Got forbid they order the most common blue star pin by the thousands for about $20 bucks.
They do take your complimentary history into account when addressing a SPAR, it’s part of the approval process.
Yeah, the awards are what they are: but most people seem to forget that having a decent amount if good stuff in your file can often make a minor indiscretion seem more out of character than anything.
Build good credit early, so when you fuck up you’ll be alright.
These news articles are quick to throw these number of complaints out there, but if you have more awards than complaints you’re seen in a better light.

Back a few years ago a IAD investigation wanted to fire an officer after 25 years of allegations? Only one allegation went all the way to the Police Board. Where the Corp Counsel presented the case against the officer. In the area of investigation where they produce the accused member complimentary awards the Department claimed no Awards available?
When a corrected complementary history was added to the termination investigation. The police board reviewed a list of of honorable mentions, Department commendations life saving award and the Blue star award.
60 days later the Police board unanimously voted the one allegation is not sustained!
During IAD or COPA investigations they always drop the complimentary history of well decorated officers when they are trying to terminate them! It looks bad on their investigation? So the board does not get to read the entire officers history? Say what ever you want….but those silly papers can stop a lot of BS?

It’s the same with that open oversight.org POS website. Rarely does it reflect awards accurately, but it will put up every allegation in a 30 year career. It intentionally does this to make the entire department look like an out of control hyper dysfunctional family to the public. Look at how the percentages are skewed on there. It’s all by design to affect public perception.

It’s total bullshit that we lowly blue shirts can’t attend and get a piece of paper. But yet, in my eighteen years I’ve seen exempts get promoted with open multiple CR’s, federal EEOC complaints, sexual harassment complaints, federal and county law suits. The rest of the clouted simply quietly retire and get other supervisory top level jobs as civilians or other LE agencies. This should be a thread on its own. Here’s a few current exempts and recently retired names just of the top my head. Carlin Morse, Galen Caldwell, Davina Ward, Dave Harris, Mike Barz, Melvin Branch, Tyrone Pendarvis, Nakia Fenner, Maryet Hall, Brian Kinnane, Brian Spreyne, Don Jerome, Senora Ben, Patrina Wines, Eve Quarterman, Fred Waller, Marc Moore, Tim Moore, Yolanda Talley, Karla Johnson, Matt Cline, Phil Cline, Joe Salemme, Kevin Duffin, John Escalante, Eddie Johnson, Eugene Williams, Ernie Brown.
