Retiree Wounded

Sounds like he was caught in the crossfire:

  • A 74-year-old retired police sergeant was shot and badly injured after stepping out of his car in North Center on Monday morning, officials said. The gunman remains at large.

The retiree stepped out of his maroon Jeep in the 2000 block of West Berteau, at the intersection with Lincoln Avenue, around 8:58 a.m., police said.

Two people began shooting. One bullet struck the victim’s left arm and the other grazed his neck. Police said he was in critical condition.

One of the suspects has since been apprehended.

Hopefully, Sarge is on the way to recovery - gunshot wounds at any age are tough, but at seventy-four? Here's to hoping he's still in line for many more pension checks.

Horrible! The retired Sgt is lucky to be alive. I wish him a full recovery and hope he rethinks living in a violent city.

Easy with that assumption on the Sarge recovery due to age, SCC… 74 is the new 50,

Retired, 30+

Some first responders stated he may have been victim of car jacking. And bad guys realized the Jeep had a police type vanity license plate? And that’s why they came up shooting? Lesson learned here is no identifying signs on your vehicle?

This is old news, but back in the day the real old timers taught us that we should always have two wallets, one a badge case and the other wallet to hand to the mugger. I carry a minimalist wallet in my front pant pocket with some cash to give to the poc. If I’m lucky he be facing me when I pull out my 40 cal and introduce him to Jesus while he’s pulling the cash out.

Lincoln and Burteau used to be a great neighborhood. The garbage is everywhere. Even you cops aren’t safe. How can the rest of us be safe? Thank God for the CCL law and having the constant training in protecting myself and my family. Calling 911 is a last resort at this point. Chicago is fuckin toast.

Time to start carrying a sawed off shotgun with shoulder sling. They have winter and summer dusters to conceal it

Not sure about that. If they saw a vanity plate they might have also moved on to a car without them. Plus they just started shooting, then left the car. Better to let the investigation continue to see what happened

Graze to the neck. He's lucky to be alive. A quarter of an inch deeper might have been a funeral. There are so many nerves, muscles, and blood vessels just under the surface of the neck. Severing any one of those is not good.

A business owner nearby the shooting wants to know why you can't protect anyone. I saw the two run away, they didn't exactly look like airborne or anything...

I always drive a late model car with a bit of rust. Urban camo. Never been carjacked, broken into, or hassled in any way. Rather spend my paycheck on non-depreciating assets anyway.

We've always removed auto dealer decals and/or license plate frames from our vehicles. Unless a person is a K-9 geek, most folks don't guess the symbolism of the plates. Best wishes for the Sgt..
