Stop Already

You know it's bad optics when ISP has to release at statement saying, "Wasn't us!"

  • The driver of a stolen car ran a red light and crashed on the Magnificent Mile on Wednesday night, sending seven people, including three young children, to hospitals, according to Chicago police.

Shortly before 9 p.m., police spotted the stolen Jeep Cherokee on northbound Lake Shore Drive near the Chicago River, according to an individual familiar with the matter.

Units pursued the Jeep, which fled north, exited at Belmont, and then headed back south on the drive. The Jeep’s 16-year-old male driver exited at Michigan Avenue, ran a red light at Chicago Avenue, and crashed into a van, according to the source and a CPD statement. A Jeep Compass and a Honda SUV were also struck, police said.

And CWB had to clarify later:

  • Editor’s note: A previous version of this story stated that the stolen vehicle was being pursued by the Illinois State Police. A spokesperson for the agency denies that. This story has been updated to reflect the spokesperson’s statement.

Chasing a car through downtown at night is a recipe for disaster....as this proves again. Someone said this was a "task force" and not CPD. Small comfort.

It's long past time for someone with a technical brain to figure out a way to disable cars without pursuits....like a Taser for cars that fries the electrical systems or something.

Why bother? If CPD had a device that could disable cars without a pursuit the usual "community" trash, especially BJ would call it racist and it would never be used.

"StarChase High Speed Pursuit Alternative" - fires a GPS tracker that sticks to the mutt's car. End the chase and let the aerial team take over.

Check out the story of Michigan State Trooper Sgt Brian Keely. He was already retired and earning a pension when he decided to come back being the police to earn a little more benefit to his pension. What happens next? Gets in a pursuit, and when the offender bailed, Sgt Keely could not stop in time and slid into the offender, killing him. Now the sgt has been charged with murder. To all pursuers out there who STILL haven’t gotten the message to not chase…think of being in Keely’s shoes. Stop chasing.

What's the point of chasing? But also what is the point of fleeing the CPD in the stolen vehicle? You catch them and they are released anyway...even if there's dope and a gun in the car. The chance of a conviction for fleeing and eluding or PSMV is slim to nil. The courts, state's attorney (and the media) are on the side of the criminal in this city. Look, Laugh, Leave...

There is a device, it’s called jail. Back in the day, in a land far, far, away from Chicago, there was a jurisdiction that had a functioning criminal justice system. In that land car chases were as rare as hen’s teeth. Why? Because the cops were the good guys! And the bad guys were, well bad. When someone ran from the cops they went to jail for a year. They also got a lecture from the judge how dangerous running from the cops was. Oh, my if they crashed their car and someone got hurt, or they drove in a dangerous outrageous manner, they went to prison. Car chases involved either drunks or felons running from a crime scene. The car manufacturers made “police interceptors”. You could hear those Dodge 440s a block away. The cars had push bars, and running from the cops would usually end with the cops using those push bars to ram the bad guys wheels off. Long time ago, but as SSC, the great American philosopher teaches us, if you award bad conduct you get bad conduct.

Tell that to the trooper that was on scene, demanding that all charges be "upgraded" but refused to do any of the paperwork. GTFO. Similar to when a trooper chased a stolen car on the Ryan, caused the offender to crash into the 87th street redline, tazed the offender, ripped the prongs out, then immediately left. ISP cowboys.

There has to be a way to remotely turn off the car's engine. If hackers can do it in a dangerous and illegal manner, the police should be able to do it in a safe and legal manner.

I have a way to end chases.

Go back to 2 cops in a squad car and have the guy riding shotgun take out the driver with a headshot from a rifle.

When you flee and put everyone on the road in danger you forfeit your right to live.

I know, it can't be done now because criminals have more rights than citizens or the police.

It would work and many citizens would support the idea.

Phoenix PD has a device called the Police Bumper Grappler. It stops the offender vehicle without a crash. Has stopped numerous chases in Arizona. Maybe the powers that be can actually DO their jobs and see if Chicago could make use of this. Doesn’t make sense to keep letting armed criminals just get away. Or put our guys in jeopardy.

Every time I have ever dealt with ISP they have done an outstanding job. It is CPD that usually leaves them with an offender in custody and no help. Come to think of it, it is probably you!

Hello? Read the post. ISP said they weren't there. They were. When things went south, they wanted nothing to do with what they created. No one is knocking them, but man up and do the paper work you created. Put your name on it.
