We've been warning Officers for years now - don't seek trouble nowadays. It isn't going to end well for you in the current political atmosphere. They demanded certain things and deserve to get them, good and hard. But we've also said if something unavoidable pops up, handle it and move on.

And yeah he would've been processed at Belmont and Western regardless, most desk crews are filled with do nothings, blah blah blah.....but come on now. I'm all for not doing anything proactive, but it doesn't take much to get him in handcuffs, call a car in, call the Area, etc
If the various oversight organizations (IAD, COPA, Inspector General, etc) wanted to make an issue of this, it's a slam dunk suspension or worse. You have a duty to perform a police function when presented with such a situation.
Yes, we've seen the posts and experienced first hand, different Districts sending crashes to "the District of Occurrence"and other such nonsense. We had a sergeant back in the day who routinely got CR numbers on entire District desks that sent crashes to his people and he made sure that the barest minimum was sustained.
Someone comes in and says they are wanted for a homicide or questioning or whatever, it takes no effort to handcuff a compliant subject, then find a tact team that needs a head or an FTO that needs to train a PPO. You don't send them away.

A homicide offender walks in, says he killed the guy and he’s the guy on TV and is turning himself in. The officers tell him he’s in the wrong place and needs to go to Belmont and western.. the guy waits a minute and actually walks out and leaves to go to Belmont and western. Just stop calling yourselves police officers. You’re coward do nothings. It’s one of two things here.. or maybe a little bit of both. You did this because you are either lazy or stupid.. or both. Desk is a bid spot. Nothing will happen to them.
CPD has the laziest officers, without a doubt. Having to call 022 for anything other than a person shot is a minimum of a 20 minute response time, even if it is an emergency. The worst is 022 1st watch. They show up late to calls just so they can 19P or take a report. There are countless incidents that could have been entirely prevented or deescalated if the officers responded in a timely manner. Don’t even bother calling them for an accident or burglary report because they won’t show up for 2 hours. Not helpful at all, it’s especially embarrassing when the neighborhood is full of police supporters. Many local businesses are fed up because 022 officers show 30 minutes late when they call for help. (But those same officers will gladly take their police discounts). Also, before excuses are made… The officers outside of 2nd watch aren’t even old.
The most egregious was when there was a murder in a luxury high rise downtown several years ago. The known offender (in a wheelchair) made good his escape. A few hours later he went to CPD headquarters to turn himself in. Went in to the desk and said he wanted to surrender himself, that he was wanted for a murder.
He was told by the CPD headquarters desk coppers that “we don’t do that here, you need to go to the 002nd district”.
So he left Headquarters and went to 002 to turn himself in.
Can’t make this up.
How about cuffing him and patting him down? After all, he did say he was wanted for a homicide.

Well months later the Detectives in area 5 called me to ask me why the same German citizen had my name in his personal belongings? They told me they just arrested the 78 year old man for shooting some thug who tried to rob him in 014 while on the CTA Blue line!
The detectives stated the old German had a list of people! Like Police, Fire Dunkin doughnuts cashier……that were nice to him in his travels around the city…..And he stated as a retired German soldier in World War 2 he moved to Chicago with his family and has carried his 9mm Luger with him all over the city? And each of these people he met on his list were good people and he would never harm them. But they never knew he was armed and trained to kill as a young man? I still remember this old guy and recall how many times I may have seen him or spoke to him in my tours?
Moral of the story? Anyone out there may have a weapon and can kill you! And as a uniformed officer, you are the first threat they see?
Years ago while working at the old CC room I took a call and the CLI indicated it came from a district. The caller requested a car to go there to make a report. I asked why the station officers wouldn't make a report and they said it was out of the district. I told the caller I wouldn't send a car and tell the desk officers that. Soon I got a call from the desk demanding a police car to be sent to the police station. I said no and if you have a problem with that have your watch commander call mine. No one ever called.

I work in a police facility. We are not a police station. We have no lockup or anywhere to store prisoners property. However, the public assumes the building is a police station and I totally understand why they think that. They come to the building all the time to turn themselves in or surrender firearms even. I NEVER had an issue just going over the air am having a tact tieam gladly come in and take the warrant or weapons turn in. To actually allow a news worthy homicide offender leave while he is doing the right thing and run himself in is such an embarrassment on the entire CPD. I’m more surprised that if there was a desk sgt on duty, that the sgt would allow this and not know better.

I personally have been communicating my concerns on my block, mainly traffic. I do believe in the years of this communication there is not ONE ticket that has been issued and maybe one (yes a single uno one) traffic stop. Another family I know has been communicating other concerns on another block, permit parking (paid for permit parking they pay every year on their two vehicles with a city sticker we MUST have) and bar concerns with little to no efforts given; I also believe zero tickets issued. Beyond ridiculous 022.

Better yet the desk Sgt wouldn't let you use the copy machine because they were always short of paper and we had to go to the area to make copies. Ridiculous as it sounds but true. They were still using the CO book with pasted messages when I left in 2010.

I worked there years ago. One night while off duty, my friend needed a traffic crash report because we were riding in a car and she hit a huge pot hole on Lake Shore Dr. The desk officer would NOT give her one.
He was a friend of mine, and STILL wouldnt do it. And I worked there. It got a little ugly when I asked whether I needed to get the Captain involved. She finally just said "fuck it " and we left. The guy's still a friend of mine. We are both retired. But sheeeesh.
I never had any use for desk people they are working the desk simpli because they are afraid or just not interested to work the street and either way should not be wearing a badge and getting a real police officers pay.

Context and comprehension is everything. Learn each and you will go far in life. I was explaining to this citizen that the officers are short handed and will only respond to low level property crimes when they are dispatched. You want to blame someone, blame the politicians. Nobody is purposely not responding to calls in a timely manner, all of our vehicles have gps tracking, if we don’t respond in a timely manner we can and will get in trouble. And for the record a traffic accident report is done in the station unless the vehicles are not drivable and burglary reports are done over the phone by 311 unless the offender is on scene. Your lack of knowledge of these procedures leads me to believe you are also a citizen. You are more than welcome to apply and shows how it’s done, if not, shut up and let us try to navigate through this mine field of shit that the democrats have created…..
